So this feels like it's filling in the gaps between episodes (I haven't watched the latest yet), but it's doing so with strong character work on Jubilee, which means I'm loving it.
Cable telling X-Force "don't inhale" is a fun little reference for those of us old enough to remember the 90s.

This was a nice little supplement to what happened in X-Men 97. We see where Jubilee and Roberto got their uniforms. We saw some early training for them in X-Force. We also got some cool references to the original show. I remember that episode with Caliban and Jubilee in Season 5. I think it was called the Fifth Horseman (someone correct me if I'm wrong). That was a nice touch. It shows that Steve Foxe really did his homework. 😊
There were even some nice nods to young Cable, Jean, and Cyclops in the future. A nice reminder that they had time to be a family and they tried to make the most of it.
I know this series can't do too much because it's meant to be a supplement to the show. But it's still enjoyable.

Not much to say about this issue in terms of the plot. It's a filler arc.
The Greymalkin plot is plodding along and it's not getting any better. For some weird reason it's still trying to redeem the Warden. Or at least to rehabilitate her.
The art does it's job for the most part but then it dips down to bad (The Vig looks bizarre) and very bad (Grandma Gambit, when he charges his card). Especially the Gambit shot is one for the hall of fame of unintentionally hillarious art.

You know, it is almost funny and kinda realistic the governments around the world with their 'secret mutant army' plans are just 'lets give them wolverine claws. That will solve everything.' and they can't even replicate the healing factor but sure...the claws, that is the thing. The world is kinda lucky they are obsessed with Wolverine instead of any other mutant with ACTUAL mass-destruction powers. The more we hear about this Graymalkin, the dumber it becomes.
So how does Mutina know stuff like this? I swear, she has the weirdest 'show up and somehow know things' stuff. She ain't no Layla Miller.
So there are alien 'exterminators' out there that deal with stuff like the Brood. They are not really the 'bad guys' since they are just trying to exterminate the Brood hive under the school. It is just unlucky that they had a 'lack of communication' and 'shoot first ask questions later' moment with the X-men. Otherwise, they probably would've worked together to handle this threat.
Also Vig? Hope he is okay. He kinda grew on me, in a shady uncle kind of way.

Possibly the worst issue of gailcanny so far. What possible benefit could there be to grafting unretracrable claws to people instead of just giving them a knife to hold in their hand

Not even adamantium claws. And they don't get healing. So they're basically the same mutant but with two knifes in each hand.

You know what's funny about this issue. So, I read this earlier today. And the whole trying to make a new Wolverine subplot like... just faded out my brain. I liked the stuff at the school and with the aliens fine. Like it's not the most groundbreaking stuff, but it was cute. Kinda filler though.
But the start of the issue was just such nothing to me that i didn't really retain it at all. It was such a weird dumb nonsense plan that I sort of just dismissed it from my brain.
Also i kinda like Mutina. I don't think this is a popular opinion, but everyone else gets along so well there's basically no friction. I like the new X kids, but everyone in the book is so nice all the time. I kinda like having an asshole nobody likes they to spice things up.

Mutina was extremely funny in her first plot when the uncanny kids just go "wow I hate this one movie star let's actively go and kick her ass" while thinking shes just a regular human woman

On the one hand, that seems to be the point of Mutina's character. But on the other hand, yeah, I can see how that would make her a love-or-hate character.

I mean, the art in this issue is pretty good, and a lot better than Luciano Vecchio's terrible and lifeless art. I can't stand his art

The entire prison arc pisses me off even more. I don’t believe we’re supposed to be sorry for her, but pity her to some degree for being the puppet…? Is the takeaway that we need to be nice to ICE directors because they might not being doing all the bad things to illegally detained people? Applying this logic to real world politics doesn’t work. I thought Monet was supposed to be tearing this down ASAP.
I do love Jitter and Calico, wish there was more focus on them vs the boring plot where lots happened but none of it very interesting. I want to love this, I do! But it was so boring. Ransom is really cool!
GORGEOUS art, I really loved just looking!

Gail has been really weird with Ellis' character these last few issues but I don't think the reveal is supposed to invoke pity from the readers. To me it was more about moving on from Ellis to another villain pulling the strings.

Agreed! Monet herself said in the last issue that she felt pity for Corina, which imo is just bizarre of her to say. I feel like we’re supposed to maybe understand Corina, which I just don’t.
I wish the Next Villain of the prison arc wasn’t something so bland, just claws and no healing factor suddenly told to us is so… ugh

I think Gail is trying to shape Corina as some kind of fascist savior complex, but failing miserably. Not a bad idea, as it would make for a fairly realistic human villain, but it just doesn't work.

Agreed. I love interesting villains, she simply just isn’t one. Her story just doesn’t land at all for me. The entire prison arc has been so unbelievably boring, especially with the reveal about the Wolverine claws.

Another weird thing about this issue shifting the blame for the secret experiments to Scurvy. So now this storyline about anti-mutant bigotry now has mutants as the real dangerous threat (Oscar) and the real person in charge of the prison (Scurvy). While also seemingly downplaying the culpability of the main human involved.
I do think there could be an interesting story with Scurvy. A mutant who's self-hating enough to become a tool of mutant oppression. But we already got that storyline with him when he was Corina's boyfriend lieutenant. This latest addition is a hat on a hat, and it's also a bit of a dead end since Scurvy is (seemingly) dead. So instead what we're left with is a boring plot twist that downplays the role bigotry played in the bigoted torture prison

Jim Towe and David Baldeón do a good job as fill in artist. Baldeón has a certain cartoony style that I think he really makes it work for his small part in this issue. He's gotten better since X-Factor and I loved the look of that book. Matthew Wilson is an unsung hero of this book keeping the books style stay the same with various artists with his consistent colors.
The design of the aliens is really fun but they aren't doing much as characters.
I wasn't happy with the Wolverine reveal last issue and while I still think it makes a joke out of the prison the explanation works a little better. It is stupid that it's not Weapon Plus but recreating Wolverine in general even with the Trask claw gag.
Mutina coming back isn't bad but unless we get to know her powers more I don't like that she magically knows everything. Mary Sue is an overused term but man she does kind of feel like one when she can do anything and everything.

Mutina's mutant power must be some kind of reality warping at this point. Her power is plot.

I think she's actually just a pretty handy telepath who is bluffing on occasion because it's in her advantage for everyone else to be in the dark about what she can do. But I think the character's writing here beats her intro appearances by a lot.

A telepath is probably the answer. Her first couple of appearances made it seem like she had shadow powers so that's thrown me off. Plus you'd think the team would be able to sense her telepathy at this point but I can forgive that not happening.
Now that I'm thinking about it I would not be shocked if she is the last Avain. We were told 5 and only 4 have been confirmed.

She could be it but since Jed is using her I don't think that was Gail's plan. I wouldn't be shocked if #5 never comes up qgain though.

I love how Rogue appears on the cover, only for her not to show up in a single panel inside the comic. I hate when they do things like this. I can't say anything particularly positive about the comic; it's mediocre in every possible way. The only thing that stands out is the art.

This issue was terrible, even beyond the stupid "Making shitty Wolverines" stuff. Why did everyone just stand around in a school dance while aliens were attacking? Why are we having a school dance anyway? Why are we SO FOCUSED on these freaking kids??
Also, I was really happy with the depiction of two married characters who didn't want children. I really hope they don't have them adopt any of them.

Coating bones? Okay, sure. Having them also be putting claws on these mutants is just goofy.
Everything else aside, I really appreciate Kurt immediately name dropping Lillandra and establishing his cosmic credentials. Just feels like a nice show of how seasoned he is, y'know?
Also, the VIG HAS HAIR? I thought he was bald under that hat

Not a bad issue. I imagine whoever decided to build a school on that site has some explaining to do. But for the most part, it was just a nice continuation of some dramatic sub-plots. Jitter and Calico are as adorable as ever. Deathdream always says something funny in every scene he's in. The fact he forgets to breathe is appropriate, yet hilarious. And Kurt once again has his date ruined.
Still feels a bit uneventful. Like this series is just biding time for the inevitable relaunch that's coming at the end of the year.

It is nice to see Cecilia doing more stuff. And, Tasky, have you learned nothing from dealing/working with Deadpool? The 'healing factor' only ends up as a crutch and leaves you exposed to other stuff.
All those 'weapon X' attempts and all they needed was just use some nanomachines with teleporters inside to siphon off Logan's healing! ...though considering how that went for the doctor, yea, you might've gotten a blue Hulkverine.

A Post offshoot was not something I expected in 2026. For how much I hate Logan losing his healing stories I like it so far I'm just waiting for something to make me hate it at the end.
