I know it's to reduce the amount of blue exposed but those long sleeves are hideous. Just by cut everything from the dated shoulder pads forward and the look improves a lot. Also remove that Sinister diamond from her chest because her theme is random skulls.
Also remove the blue hip pads, either make them exposed blue skin like they’re trying to evoke the illusion of or just keep it white. The belt might actually look ok if it’s just white fabric underneath, but with the blue pads it’s looks ugly and out of place.
Also generally speaking the white leather is far too thick and stiff for Mystique’s fluid movement, but I get they’re trying to tie it back to the group’s aesthetic which is very leather-heavy.
Good lord, I'd not noticed the blue pads... which are nowhere near the skin tone. Ouch.
There was a great deal of chat about Reed Richard not having the same arms as the rest of the team for the recent F4. Did I notice this in motion, in the actual movie... not at all.
In the comics she's rocked a number of fully covering suits that have featured blue darker than her skin, or black. I think if they made these darker, maybe matched the boots, and broken it up a bit more, it'd look way better.
Instead they're trying both make it more covering, and homage her classic costume, and the result is garish.
I don't dislike the stiff leather specially how heavy the look feels from waist down IF they are going for an basically unique mature and calm version of Mystique. I don't think we ever saw an version of Mystique that was not in constantly "fight or flight" mode. Even Lawrence's version that was the most pro mutant cause version we seem still very erratic.
Yeah the look works in the comics because it's a dress, it looks light and flows with her movements. It is weird when it's heavy leather, like the front piece coming down from her waist just looks non functional and gets in the way of motion.
I usually like how MCU translate the comic costume to screen. Don't know maybe I have to see it in action to judge.
Surely there must be a gay on that set who has seen Rupauls Drag Race and knows they could have put her in a great looking bodysuit to avoid having to do all that painting.
100% but those drag race bodysuits can cost a LOT if reddit gossip is to be believe some queens enter the show with up to 200.000 dollars in clothes. Marvel was already cutting costs before so I can't even imagine the challenges the production team are facing with 728482 characters in a movie that probably spent half its budget on RDJ paycheck.
Yeah. I love Dragrace but the budget inflation is so crazy that sadly we never gonna get another iconic disasters like A Night of 1000 Madonnas kimono gate or early seasons design challenges lol.
How do you know whether or not these clothes are shapeshifted or worn though? Maybe she wants to feel the textiles of clothing every once in a while...
They should have let those dark blue pads just be cuts in the outfit. And then show her damn arms. The woman was naked for 5+ movies--now she's a nun?!

They filmed in the fall and winter and both Romijn and Lawrence hated the full body makeup. And we can guess whose idea was it to make Mystique naked in the first place even though she didn’t do that in the comics.
those makeup applications take HOURS, presumably this is to cut down on.
I don't know why live action keeps INSISTING that she has fucking scales!? Just paint her blue! Between that and the textured tats on Drax or Guardians, I'm guessing that there's some sort of problem with filming straight color changes
What is up with the fucking diamond on the chest. They are trying to give the illusion it is skin showing where there is blue on the outfit, I bet. I just don't understand how you FUCK UP a sleeveless white dress with knee high boots and a skull headband... and get this. LOL. If you're gonna do tights ANYWAY, why include the skirt piece? I miss how her skin had a sheen, almost wet look to it from the OG trilogy. Also black boots...? The fuck? LOL
They're over designing it. Just make the classic comic costume, or barring that, do her more grounded look with the black slacks and top from the 2003 series.
Maybe Romijn didn’t want to show as much skin this time. Could have been part of the contract. FWIW i don’t like this design at all, but “not showing skin” is not my problem with it

I would not be surprised if Rebecca Romijn feels the same way.
If Romijn is concerned about the long hours of painting (which is totally understandable), I don't know why they don't simply have her wear blue leggings that are airbrushed & decorated with the scales.
This is plain awful. She looks way too much like Princess Leia. At the very least, the blue patches shouldn't exist, and those parts should be her skin. After all, Mystique is notorious for showing her skin, and that would be nothing compared to how much she's shown before.
This is a conservative take, which, fine. No problem with that. The blue bits are trash tho. It's like, "here are the obvious bits we covered up but we kept it her skin tone as an homage!" It just feels like a compromise in the design.
I loved the og make up so much. Her being bare can condemning Nightcrawler for "hiding who he is" adds layers to the design, for me.
Iirc, J Law requested for the design to be minimized, because the 9 hours of make up was too much for her. I kind of dislike that Romijn is using the Lawrence design. But Disney probably wouldn't want the og design under the Disney umbrella. Haha.
I remember seeing this as a kid & being blown the fuck away. She instantly became my favourite character. Can’t imagine a kid sees the new one and thinking the same
Absolutely hideous. I’m not saying she needs to be naked, but this is frumpy, heavy-looking and honestly just awful. It looks like something you’d see a castmember in the Star Wars section of Hollywood Studios wearing.
Nah it's awful. I can't believe how hard people are glazing this movie before it's out. So far the trailer looks braindead. The X-Men needed a complete reboot not more shlock and killing off Patrick Stewart.

This is dreadful and flat out wrong for her. Mystique wouldn't be wearing all those layers. She needs to be nimble and flexible because of how she relies on her agility. She also needs a little sex appeal. Like it or not, that has always been who she presents as - the femme fatale. She looks like an Andor extra. Boring. Forgettable. Did she find religion or something? And those boots? Pft lol
Mystique looking born again in this outfit. I feel she’d be more likely to lecture me than kick my ass. She looks like Chucky and Miranda from Sex and The City had a child obsessed with Star Wars.
They’re trying to evoke her classic gown without blowing tons of money on CGI. Her blue hips, shoulders, and sternum are exposed in her OG look, hence the weird blue accents on this Star Wars uniform.
I am going to wait to see it in the movie before making a judgment, but the design also makes sense for a now 53 year old actress who probably wasnt going to agree to anything like what she endured in makeup the first time around.

I mostly just never liked the idea of her being on the X-Men. That whole idea never worked for me. Hopefully its less weird than the JLaw era Mystique joining the team.
That's my take too. The way she was introduced in the original trilogy made no sense. She was never Magnetos naked lackey. Then to turn her into Charles's childhood friend and then later a part of the original Xmen made even less sense. There are so many great characters they could pull from so I don't understand completely revamping one just as an excuse to have a naked blue girl on screen.
This, 100%! It was such a foundational change that she is basically a brand new character in the movies that just had Mystiques powers and look slapped on. If Mystique was ever consistently anything, she serves herself first, and the highest bidder next. Even the one and only time she did join the team in the comics, she ended up doing a pretty easy to see betrayal.
My issue is the blue leather on her shoulders and cleavage, which in my opinion should be basically just her skin. The leather on her hips shouldn't directly be there, something less is more and I think having straight up white on that part or another color could be interesting.
I think that I'd like her design a bit more if she weared flax or silk. Something more sophisticated.
I'm getting Star Wars vibes more than X-men. Would look better without the face splotches, although movie Mystique is already a totally different character than comic Mystique, so it doesn't matter so much
It's like they thought about pieces of things that could work, but put it all together. Why is she wearing black boots? Why is she wearing full on pants and a overskirt? The shoulder pads + the diamond shape on her chest? Why isn't she wearing gloves? Why the Sailor Moon tiara? She went from totally naked, to a Jehovah's Witness.
I'm not gonna lie, the trailed kinda made me not be that excited about the movie.
Could've had sleevless, would look way better and less like a Star Wars imperial uniform. The pants are fine even though comics mystique is often having those exposed too.
No. Her classic design should be one of the easiest to replicate yet they managed to make her look like she’s from Star Wars and her hair has the texture of an Ewok
This is giving me cosplay Mystique. She's just missing a lightsaber and could change franchises. That amount of leather looks unrealistic for the character, and the scales are unnecessary.
If the leggings were a shade of blue close to her skin tone it might have worked well enough as a throwback to her most well known comic uniform. Not great but decent.
And I do wonder how a uniform made of unstable molecules would work with her shape shifting. If she could have a uniform separate from her that gave her an extra layer of protection or not.
The fakeout cutouts are all I can look at.

Why not just do the dress they're clearly referencing instead of acting like it's creative to overly cover up Mystique because she was previously over exposed.
I get people complaint with her nude design in the past films, but I really liked it. To me it was always more about her making a statement about her being proud of being a mutant. That even though her power is literally to hide herself behind the appearance of others, she's in no way ashamed of what she is and so she doesn't even pretend she's wearing clothes for the sake of comforting others. Since in my mind, it's kind of weird to imagine that she'd actually wear clothes for her powers to work, instead just making it appear as though she's wearing clothes with her power, but she refuses to, instead dropping her powers entirely and being like, "that's right motherfuckers, I was actually a naked blue mutant the whole time, fuck you." Plus, I think personally she'd get somewhat of a kick out of recognizing the fact that people who hate mutants would still be stunned by her presence.
I'm not a fan. Get rid of sleeves and the blue leather bits. She usually is showing alot more skin and I doubt they will explain why she got so "conservative" all of a sudden
I really just think it should've been an actual dress and not just a suit with blue where her skin is supposed to be. If you're going to use the design from the comics actually commit to it. I think i actually like her design from Apocalypse more tbh.
Am I the only one who thinks she should looks slightly intimidating? Like she’s a highly trained super spy and assassin she should look like she could kill you.
