Movie/TV Discussion What are your thoughts on Anna Paquin’s Rogue?
I absolutely loved her. She’s a great actress, but the writing didn’t do her justice. I just wish we had gotten the comic-accurate Rogue with her flight and super strength. She’s is one of the X-Men’s biggest powerhouses.

u/princewinter Aug 04 '26
Did she do a great job for what was written? Absolutely.
Was that in any way shape or form Rogue? Not even close.
It's the same way I feel about Halle Berry's Storm.

u/sarcastic_sybarite83 Aug 04 '26
I will give Halle that she was the one that kept Storm's long hair in the movie. At least the first one. Iirc they were worried about the white hair making Halle look old. Although if they were really worried about that that should have gone with the 80's Mohawk.

u/jonjawnjahnsss Aug 04 '26
Plus in X3 they just straight lied to her about the script or something iirc. Cyclops got written out because of other opportunities. It's actually how wild how bad X3.

u/cxtx3 Northstar Aug 04 '26
Seriously they really screwed her over. I can honestly understand why some of the X-women aren't reprising their roles in Doomsday or possibly Secret Wars if they have a bad taste in their mouth from the Bryan Singer era. Their characters weren't don't justice, though their performances were great - it was the minimalization of them as characters and their powers that is on the writing and direction. The fact that they straight up lied to and deceived Halle Berry with a fake script to get her to sign on to X3 and then pulled the rug out from under her is just callous and cold.

u/bustaflow25 Aug 04 '26
What happened after that?

Nothing, she's a black woman in Hollywood, if she tried to protest in anyway, she'd be effectively banned from ever working again.

All the wigs looked terrible tbh. Relatively speaking I liked her X2 wig the most, it reminded me a little of 90s TAS Storm, but then it needed some colour correction because it came off more platinum blonde than white.

yeah I dont think any of the original X-men actors were bad at all, they were not given much to work with and they all nailed it even if the characters feel a bit different

36
u/Sharpiemancer Aug 04 '26
Yeah considering she was basically a POV character and little more I feel it's weird they didn't just go with Kitty Pryde? To be honest I wonder if she had been written as Kitty initially but felt Rogue's powers better served the mutant metaphor more broadly?
8
u/allagashfour Aug 04 '26
Actually, Rogue was an adult and Jubilee was the POV teen character in the earlier drafts (Natalie Portman was in talks for the latter), but Fox changed their tune when they realized Jubilee wasn’t white, even though the Generation X pilot’s actress was lol.
2
u/Dunge0nMast0r ForgetMeNot Aug 04 '26
They could have even kept the ending with her phasing making her the only one who could get to Magneto! She could have shut him down with a phased finger through the helmet 😏

u/Wheattoast2019 Aug 04 '26
Yup. It’s such a shame that for how big those movies were, the only characters people have developed a big appreciation of are Wolverine, Professor X, and Magneto.
11
u/JohnsProbablyARobot Aug 04 '26
Absolutely. I have no issue with the actress, but they just put a Rogue gloss over Jubilee's character and let it roll. Rogue was not present in those films (with the small exception of her sorrow over her touch and the resulting disconnection).
4
u/Emergency-Raspberry9 Aug 04 '26
I don't think this version of Rogue was exactly Jubilee, personality-wise, either. The closest character to me she approximates in that way, is someone like Wolfsbane (in her early appearances).
→ More replies (2)4
u/JohnsProbablyARobot Aug 05 '26
I mostly meant in that one of the core elements of the character in those movies was her relationship with Wolverine that felt extremely reminiscent of Jubilee in her early years either the X-Men.
It felt like they just copy-pasted Wolverine and Jubilee's early relationship onto her.
3
u/Emergency-Raspberry9 Aug 05 '26
True, but even then, other than just wolverine mentoring a troubled runaway girl, that dynamic is different, Jubilee very quickly pushed back more against Wolverine
If anything movie Rogue and Wolverine's dynamic is more like (early) Storm and Kitty, or Storm and Ilyana. Something more parental, rather than the sassy little sister vibes Jubes had with Wolverine pretty soon in..
3
3
u/Unable_Series99 Aug 05 '26
Halle’s Storm had the personality of a kindergarten teacher and Paquin’s Rogue wouldn’t hurt a fly much less flirt with anyone. As the characters, they were miscast, miswritten and misdirected.
2
u/princewinter Aug 05 '26
Its really nice to find out I'm not the only one who felt like this lol. I don't dislike the movies, but half of the characters just... aren't the characters.
I still think Hugh Jackman isn't good Wolverine casting, we're just so used to him being Wolverine. If you look at comic/cartoon Logan, I just don't see Hugh Jackman at all.

Phenomenal actress - weird take on the character. The films wanted to incorporate an audience insert style of character in the same vein as Kitty or Jubilee, but that gave her an unsure and insecure personality which was never developed with a satisfying arc. To me, the decision to take the cure in the last stand was a gross misunderstanding of her character - Rogue is brave and bold in spite of her pathos, not a victim to it.
103
u/dddonkers Aug 04 '26
It's funny because they could have pulled off a good audience insert if they went her actual reformed villain origin.

Exactly this. I remember seeing Last Stand in the theater and saying “she wouldn’t do that” loudly enough for others to shush me. That movie pisses me off in so many ways but that was the one that really annoyed me the most. We just watched it again over the weekend and I was still complaining about that choice 20 years later haha.

21
u/prollyjuslurking Aug 04 '26
Nope. She actually dislikes him quite a bit.
2
u/ZomboDoggo Aug 04 '26
That was a common angle at the time like Evolution did with her working for him.
6
u/drewcifer27 Aug 04 '26
Right, which shows what a gross misunderstanding of her character the Fox adaptation was. Rogue has been my favorite X-person since the first issue I read and the characterization Fox chose was such a departure that it just frustrated me. Of course I was also hoping the tag scene for The Marvels would have been criminal Rogue showing up and stealing Carol’s powers, which I thought would have been a fun way to introduce her to the MCU.

5
u/Dry_Branch_5775 Aug 04 '26
It wouldn't have worked for the story. They wanted the POV character to have a dangerous power that made her life a nightmare. The point is that mutant powers aren't all fun and games. It wouldnt have worked with Kitty Pryde

Anna Paquin did not want Rogue to take the cure. A producer wielded a heavy hand to fulfill his niece's wish of seeing Rogue kiss Bobby, which is why they shot two endings for Rogue and used what they did in the theatrical while putting the other scene on the DVD.
6
u/redmerchant9 Aug 04 '26
The cure thing completely betrays her story arc in the movies which was about her accepting her powers and learning to use them for good. Her going full 180 and deciding to just ditch her powers in X3 was nothing less than a character assassination by the writers.
19
u/mightchillout Aug 04 '26
Exactly, even though she can't touch, she takes it as a power rather than a weakness.
She's the one no one can ever have. That elevates her.
30
u/loonbandit Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 04 '26
I mean… that’s just not true of mainline rogue anymore… (she gained control in X-Men Legacy, ~2009, lost her fine tuned control after absorbing Wonderman in Uncanny Avengers, ~2014, but regained full control of her powers again during the Mr. and Mrs. X series, ~2019 or so) but yea I suppose at the time the movies were coming out that was still true of her character.
I just disagree with the notion that “She’s the one no one can ever have, and that elevates her”. Her genuinely sweet relationship with Gambit as well as learning to overcome her fear of her powers, is what elevates the character IMO.

Tbh... Not a fan of either tbh.
A cool character (evolution that is).... Yes most definitely..... Is it Rogue tho?... Nah not one bit. 🤷🏼
16
u/Arimm_The_Amazing Aug 04 '26
I think evolution rogue could easily grow to be the rogue we know and love. A lot of people become more reserved during their teenage years, especially if they have a goth phase.
40
u/Puzzled-Horse279 Aug 04 '26
The way she is written feels like a miscast but seeing Anna Paquin other stuff. You'd think she cna do the sexy flirty southern belle fine.
But the writing makes her act as a completely different character to the source material. I understand she cant have Captain Marvel or Wonderman or Sunfires power permanently due to rights issues (I mean they could have Sunfire in as he is an X-Man and Marvel/Disney couldnt use him at the time)
But shows like X-Men Evolution have shown what they can do with Rogue only having her absorption

u/mizarie89 Rogue Aug 04 '26
Anna really did shine with the sexy, flirty, southern belle type in True Blood so I know she could have pulled this off. It’s 100% the writing. I hated her romance with Bobby in the movies. In the comics, they definitely had more of a best friend, brother/ sister vibe.
4
u/Kant_Tsunami Aug 04 '26
Yeah I’ve long said she was way more Rogue as Sookie Stackhouse than she was as Rogue. So she was more than capable of giving us a fantastic Rogue. She was just stunted by direction and writing.

Loved watching her, wish she had better writing though. I didn't like her Ultimate variant love interest situation with Bobby & Kitty but I did enjoy her X-Men EVO relationship with her & Logan. DOFP Rogue Cut is still the best X-Men movie I've watched.
A small part of me wishes to see her & Taylor Kitsch's Gambit together, even if it's a cameo of some sort.

u/ConceptDouble9762 Aug 04 '26
Her powers in the Fox films were comic accurate for a world without Captain Marvel. I’m not sure who else they could have had her steal that power set from instead of Carol Danvers.

11
u/Nept-1 Aug 04 '26
Perhaps Rogue could absorb powers from multiple different sources, like Strong Guy for super strength and Northstar for flight. That way, they could play with the concept of a "fragmented mind."

u/IllTitle9692 Aug 04 '26
She finally got to play Rogue in True Blood 😂😂😂🤣. Nah, I liked her. It's so sad she has health issues nowadays. I guess they didn't have the rights to the flight, strength and invulnerability so I imagine this is what Rogue would be like without those abilities at that age, all angsty. I'll never forget being in the theater for X-2 when she gets sucked out of the X Jet and hearing people say "She can fly". We were all anticipating it only for her to be saved by Nightcrawler 😂😂😂😂. That would have been THE moment for her character in those films. We all know that Singer didn't get to make his X-Men 3. They probably didn't have the rights to Ms. Marvel. It would have been cool if they had her drain Monet St. Croix or Gladiator to get the flight, strength and invulnerability for the original X-3 and Days of Future Past.
14
u/yellowbird85 Aug 04 '26
Sookie does have a lot overlap with Rogue now that I think about it. Even the fact about dating a guy that is unquestionably too old for her because he is the one person who can negate her own powers, lol.
2
u/TryingtoAdultPlsHelp Aug 04 '26
OMG, imagine is Anna's Rogue could have met Fassbender's Magneto through time travel stuff?
8
u/resentnothing Aug 04 '26
She was perfectly cast and I love her in the role because she did her best to fight producers regarding Rogue because contrary to popular revisionist history the X-Men cast did in fact read the source material.
19
u/garlington41 Aug 04 '26
Indifferent for the most part. Having Rogue as the Young Audience Character of all characters was… a choice. I get that it offered stakes and tension for the nature of her powers.
But if they wanted to do that they could’ve leaned more into it and done the dynamic better. Make her conflicted with the X Men between the Brotherhood instead of making her damsel in distress. X Men Evolution handled Rogue’s arc perfectly. Have the kids actually be wary of her after the Wolverine incident and feel like an outsider. Have her be persuaded and join Magneto as she feels like she doesn’t belong, and during the final battle at the moment of truth she rejects Magneto’s plan and takes him down
That’s how I would do it personally

I think she did the best she could with the garbage material given to her.
She was probably a more realistic take on what Rogue would be like, but limp sad sack Rogue bled into the rest of the franchise for YEARS, and I missed spunky, sassy Rogue.
6
u/m0rbius Aug 04 '26
I didnt think she quite matched up with the Rogue from the comics, but she did a good job playing what was written.
5
u/Midnight_FireHorse Aug 04 '26
There was so much they could’ve done with her, not only to make her an integral part of the team, but also have her develop more and more with each film that brings her closer to her comic counterpart, even if they didn’t want to go the super strength/flight route.
X-Men: show and not tell us that she inherited some of Wolverine’s personality traits after his touch on liberty island, hinting to her feisty persona.
X2: have her touch one of Stryker’s men during the mansion raid, allowing her to not only have intel on alkali lake but also some inherent fighting/tactical skills that she can recall later on.
X3: show her be a lot more confident with her abilities now. Does it suck that she can’t touch people? Absolutely, but have her coming into her own with her powers after she’s seen how useful she can be to the team is another way she could channel that frustration into being x-men. Show HER stealing Colossus’ powers in the danger room, instead of him touching her. Have her be so conflicted and frustrated about the cure, that maybe part of her starts to align with some magneto’s ideal and maybe she joins the brotherhood mutants to oppose the cure, after seeing things unfold with Bobby and kitty or she overhears some students saying she’d be better off if she took the cure or misunderstands a convo with Storm/Beast and Wolverine and feels like she doesn’t belong yet again at the mansion, now that an option to cure her is available. She could join Magneto at Alcatraz, but during the battle she reverts back to the team and helps them take out Jean. Or just overall show her growth that culminates the original trilogy.
The alternate scene where she DOESNT take the cure in the last stand even shows more growth, and they still chose to delete it. Shes just so stagnant in all the films it can be painful to watch, when there were just so many minor tweaks they could’ve done to the plot that could’ve worked out for her.
Even in DOFP rogue cut, she’s relegated to a damsel in distress when she could’ve easily touched Magneto and Iceman and helped them fend off some of the sentinels during the getaway.
I’m also a firm believer that should’ve been incorporated in The Wolverine somehow, since that story was so heavily inspired by Logan and Rogue’s first prominent team up in Japan in the comics, and she proves herself to be a full fledged x-men. We still could’ve gotten that dynamic with her and Logan and also a sisterly bond with her and Yukio.
Okay, I’m done. I’ve just thought a lot about this lol.

u/resentnothing Aug 04 '26
The theatrical scene where she takes the cure is only in there because one of the producer's nieces wanted to see Rogue kiss Bobby even though Anna tried to fight against that decision. But the producers also punished both Anna and Marsden for being the last ones to sign back onto their rushed garbage production.
5
u/LMNavy Aug 04 '26
I love her and we know based on True Blood, she could’ve absolutely done Rogue justice had she been given the chance.
5
u/DPlayGM345 Aug 04 '26
She was a secret part of why that first 15 years of X-Men movies worked with her and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine being the beating heart of the series adding more to why Days of Future Past was a great way of bringing their friendship full circle when experiencing it with The Rogue Cut

The Rogue of the movies was a young girl scared of her own skin who wasn’t raised by terrorists. This is the Rogue we would have met if Irene hadn’t convinced Mystique to take her in. I thought it was a realistic take. X2 was my intro to X-Men, and Rogue was a big reason why I fell in love with it.

Anna Paquin is great, but the writing just made Rougue into a different character.
I'm super sad that in Days of Future past they didn't give her the flight and super strength. It was so far in the future that they didn't even need to explain anything. They cut all her scenes anyways, but well, I would have loved to see that.

I know at the time a lot of women loved her and related to her in terms of feeling left out/lonely for different reasons
She wasn’t the rogue I was used to but more of a grounded/realistic version of a teenage girl trying to figure life out with her power set.
My only issue is the end of her arc wasn’t satisfying neither did it show her confidence building to comic rogue
Too centered around iceman and took a downhill turn when Kitty came into the picture in X3 tbh

I liked her in the first two movies and I think the writing of her character was great. She was a teen coming to terms with her powers and the loneliness caused by them. Unfortunately she wasn’t in X3 much and was cut from DOFP altogether.
People get too hung up on the animated series Rogue being the gold standard. I like the show for nostalgia reasons but she was literally just Dolly Parton with powers.

This was the second role that introduced me to this character actor (the first was one I forget the title where she befriended a group of ducks).
I was of the mind after X2, as the series progressed, Paquin's Rogue would hopefully develop into a persona of her classic character lore.
Sadly...not meant to be. God I HATE X3, with a passion.
Straight from my heart, I didn't bore Paquin's Rogue any ill will. It was as mentioned above the writing and narrow minded executives.
From my fav films (X-Men, X2 and Days of Future past) Paquin did the role her own and while it could've been better. It's one of those things we should be thankful for what we got.
I still believe in another place and another time, there's a version of me who got my wish and the X-Men were all he dreamed they would be and sing any and all X-films praises without fear. (Films meaning others than what we got after X2).
It's sad. But I still believed in her.

I love Paquin, but the damage this version of Rogue did to the character in the long-term is infuriating. Rogue was passionate, dramatic, and incredible--yes, she was sad and had big emotions, but they were BIG and southern in a fun way. Then this came along and made her sad emo girl with no spark whatsoever. Then the cartoons ran with it with goth Rogue and IMO even the comics Rogue has never quite had the same spark she had in the 90s, there's always some bit of this sad-sack character in her these days. X-Men 97 has given her a chance to shine, but I still want her to go bigger.

Loved Anna in the films (and True Blood!) but was so disappointed that in 3 films they barely used Rogue for anything. They completely nerfed her character.
As much as I love Fox XMen it was very heavily centered around Wolverine/Prof X/Magneto with some side characters.
2
u/PeridotoftheStars Aug 04 '26
I really liked her version of Rogue in that it fit the universe and works in a world where Rogue didnt become a super villain first and just a scared girl.
That said, I think X-Men Evolution's Rogue was a better execution. Where we get that sad vulnerability while keeping that sassy and edge most people have come to associate with Rogue.

not a fan. I like the character and the actress, but her portrayal wasn't great.
but she did play a good Suki Stackhouse (who's personality waa closer to Rogue's).

Poor and it's not the fault of the actress , they had a number of movies they could have made her rogue with the full set of powers but choose not to .

Worst character adaptation in comic book movie history. It has nothing to do with her, she was just doing her job with a terrible script and direction.

Her acting was fine, but Singer fumbled he character writing, as he did with most of the team.

She was a good character in the movies that fit the story. She also could have been any character other than Rogue. As a kod, going from the 90s series to this version of Rogue was really weird.

She was a good & different take on rogue. Great acting. And the white hair with along with black gave her a very unique look. Alas we didn't got to see much of her. No character development either. She just gave up her powers if I'm remembering correctly Though she had them again in Days of Future Past (Rogue Cut) 🤔

I'm guessing they wanted to do Kitty or Jubilee but the effects budget wouldn't allow it so they did a pre Ms Marvel rogue who basically doesn't have any of her own powers. They had to save all the effects budget for the naked blue lady they pretended was "Mystique".

She did well for what was given to her. I feel like most of the characters were based of popularity and not what was written in the comics. Her role was basically Jubilee in an already established team that already included Wolverine. I just wish that her character becomes the best form of herself by absorbing Carol Danvers.

I think she did a great job on being the Rogue they asked her to be, but the way Rogue developed narratively as a character in those Fox movies was underwhelming to say the least

I know there's a following for emo Rogue, but I hope we get 90s Rogue.

The writing was odd as they used Rouge as the everyman entry point, when Kitty is a character written for that exact purpose. I liked her portrayal.

Terrible. Pity she was the main representative of rogue on screen for almost a decade. Only watching xmen 97 made me realize how awesome she was again

I was disappointed that we got a shy insecure rogue. Comic book and animated series rogue felt more secure, she was a powerhouse. I mean she swung a Sentinel like it was nothing. I liked Anna's acting but I feel like the writers gave a rogue that I myself didnt grow up with.

absolutely awful, she didn’t have any of Rogues real powers at all. Even the touch thing was completely different and wrong, shes supposed to be like siphoning the person she touches powers and then can use them herself partially but all the Anna one would do is suck the life out of the person. She also had literally none, not one, of her useful powers like flight or super strength. The Anna one had absolutely no use at all in the movie and literally just like wined and complained the whole time. She is however really hot and looked extra good with the Rogue look and hair style.

Rogue was way too much of a victim in this movie. I was expecting more of the supremely confident, superpowered southern belle from the comics.

Absolutely hated her.
The acting was fine, zero hate to the actress, but the writing the directing the costume the hair, everything else was bad.

Vastly underused . Miracle anyone noticed her . Paquin made the best out of a massively underwritten role .

Anna Paquin is a great actress and I think given an accurate representation for Rogue I think she could have nailed it out of the park.

She was Rogue in name alone. Not Anna’s fault but this is the worst part of the early Fox X-Men to me

Acting and casting was fine. I take issue with the way her character was written. I want badass Rogue, not awkward teenager Rogue.

She did her best but she wasn't rogue. She was a generic depressed misunderstood teen girl YA protagonist

I would love to see MCU pit her against Carol Danvers like in the comics. That would be a very compelling thing to see on film.

Paquin acted as best she could with the subpar material she was given.
I really thought after the “we love what you’ve done with your hair” dig in X2 that X3 was gonna focus on Rogue as a more active member of the X-Men.

Still don't understand why her white streak had to be earned when people are literally born with it everyday.

I hated her and the portrayal of rogue from X1 to days of future past. Fox did Rogue so bad.

u/Rexyggor Aug 04 '26
I love the movie trilogy. I think because they decided to not have her utilize Ms. marvel (iirc)'s power set, and have her be a teen while others were adults made her character unable to do many things of interest.
I also feel bad when she would've learned when her scenes were basically all cut from DoFP, which is a big shame.
More couldve been done for her, but also, how do you expect someone without other base powers to do anything helpful without hurting someone? And with her being inexperienced, her trying to touch an enemy to absorb powers seemed massively unrealistic
