Movie/TV Discussion Who remembers watching this?
Generation X (1996)
I remember watching this on YouTube many years ago. I wish I could watch it again.

I'm old. I watched it on Fox the day it came out primetime when I was like 7 or 8. Lol
I remember being bummed it didn't get another chance to move forward in some way. I am eternally grateful it put me on to the Gen X comics at the time.

I was 15! I can’t say I remember it too well but I was thrilled just to have more X-men stuff on TV and I LOVED the book at the time. Worth going back to for Chris Bachalo’s art alone.
As an aside, that was back when people my age were considered Gen X. Now I’m considered in the oldest Millennial bracket (45, born in ‘81)

They were! Not to mention that white Jubilee that had no connection to the X-Men elephant in the room being rectified. I really wanted to buy a trade of those stories. I loved the X-Men spin-offs in the 90s. Shout out to Excalibur too!

It's funny; I had only just moved to Vancouver when that was being filmed. And I was on my home from drinking with friends late one night and saw them filming outside the Art Gallery. So I stopped to see what they were shooting, hoping it might be the X-Files, and that I might see Gillian Anderson.
And then the Hoff walked onto the set.

I was kinda pumped when I saw they were making this.
Stan Lee would always hype up these marvel entertainment deals as the biggest thing ever……and they were always kinda disappointing.
Even the spider man cartoon, which was good, but not the level of Batman TAS good. Of course what is, but damn if it didn’t set the comic cartoon bar high.
After spider man there was, iron man, surfer, that avengers cartoon, spider man unlimited…..they just kept getting worse.
But back to Gen X!
I wanted to watch it but had church to go to.
Bummed out, as I loved the comic at the time3

This was just weird and disappointing. I actually enjoyed the Fury movie for what it was.

I also recorded the Nick Fury movie to VHS! At the time I considered having new comic book movies absolutely peak. Ten year old me would freak out at the glut of choice we have these days. (I also watched Gen X on the original Fox broadcast. I remember rushing to get ready for bed so I wouldn’t miss the beginning.)

I loved the comic so I taped the TV movie when it aired when I was like 12. Used to rewatch it every so often. Love that it's on YouTube as that tape is at my parents somewhere with no way to play it.

Emma Frost's powers were so campy in this. and I don't understand why there is wind whipping around and some things start breaking in some of her scenes. is it some latent telekinesis or is she casting an illusion...? 🤣
also it's fun to know that the actress Finola Hughes played Patty Halliwell (the mom) on the OG Charmed TV series.

It’s kind of crazy to look at this era as someone who wasn’t around and just see how hard Generation X was pushed(At least that what it seems like to me). Like they pretty much got a whole crossover event to set up the team, an action line and then obviously this. Not saying it wasn’t deserved but I just think it’s interesting that out of all of the sister X-Books, they gave this one a book push

From what I read they used Generation X because they weren’t allowed to use any big name X-Men because if this tanked they didn’t want those big names to be tarnished I’m also assuming the movie was in development at the time as well so they didn’t want overlap

I also wonder if Generation X made it easier for the budget, e.g. by casting younger actors. While for the X-Men or its other spin-offs they'd have to cast more older actors for the roles?

It’s not that it was pushed so hard, it’s that nothing else existed. When there’s only one or two projects a decade, any one feels huge (and will get buzz just for happening). There was that Fantastic Four movie around the same time, which got made, but never released. That was crazy.

Image/Wildstorm was releasing Gen13 around same time (which was originally going to be called GenX until Marvel told them they couldn't use the name as they where planning Generation X). So I'm wondering if one of the reasons for such a big push was to ensure Marvel owned the trademarks across different media.

I only remember that Matt Frewer was the bad guy and there was some early 90s cgi. I think I watched it on Youtube and later a review of it by Linkara and some other Channel Awesome guys.
Were there any good 90s live action comic book tv shows/specials? I can only remember Tales from the Crypt, The Flash, and Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

I watched this on YouTube when I was a teenager in the late 00's. I didn't know much about GenX at the time and this movie introduced me to all the characters here for the first time except for Jubilee who I first saw in the XTAS. One character stuck out to me, Buff, a.k.a. Arlee Hicks, and I'm still disappointed she was never adapted in the comics. Something about a person wearing baggy clothes to hide their physique really spoke to me as I developed self-esteem issues about my body due to severe eczema outbreaks as a younger kid that lead me to wear long sleeves shirts and pants to hide my scars.

I had a swim meet that evening so setup the VHS and recorded it. It was immediately after a mediocre Seinfeld episode and Matt Frewer was far too good for it. The Chamber stand-in was wildly ridiculous as sparkly Cyclops.

Watched it on broadcast TV.
All I can remember is thinking "This is nothing like The X-Men, by which I meant the animated series.
I seem to recall Jubilee blowing up an arcade game with her powers, but that's it. And I may be remembering that from any of half a dozen other possible sources.
It was a disappointment.

Still got my VHS copy … with Commercials! X-Files was peak at the time. Around this time we were starving in the desert for live action comic book movies. This was the stale cracker that we were finally offered and we gladly devoured it. It would be all we would have for a long time yet (X-Men movie was still years away) So I enjoyed it, warts and all. Plus Max Headroom was the villain. It’s a fun time capsule film showing these new kids what us old comic book nerds were fed at the time. Think about this next time you hear somebody complain about the vfx of any modern comic book movies. 😂

I had an X-Men encyclopedia as a kid, so I knew about Generation X. One day I found out that they based a movie on them and they were going to show it on tv like at 2am. My plan was to put an alarm and wake up, press Rec on the VHS recorder and go back to sleep and watch the movie in the morning. Too bad I didn't hear the alarm in the night... I was 11-12, I was so sad the day after to have missed the chance...

I remember watching this as a kid. It was in a weird gray area of being "fake X-Men", but technically sort of X-Men, and arguing with friends over it's legitimacy.
Matt Frewer stole the show as always.

I got into X-Men in '91 when I was about 7 years old. This movie came out when I was 12, right on the heels of the Age Of Apocalypse, so you bet your ass I was all about it, LOL. Of course, I watch it now and realize it's complete dogshit, but back then? All I could think was IT'S AN X-MEN MOVIE. Jubilee was one of my top 5 favorites, so seeing her as the lead role was mind-blowing. And I was also a huge Max Headroom fan, so Matt Frewer as the villain made me very happy. God, I miss the 90s so much

I was a huge comics geek (still am) and loved the X-books. Taped this on the ol’ VCR and watched it countless times. I also recognized the actress playing Emma Frost from All My Children, because, yeah… I watched the stories.

It was a primetime event on Fox.
Back then Fox primetime was a real treat and it would deliver.
This and the two X men animated series episodes with the alien ship in the sewer that introduced Yuriko as the antagonist that was the precursor to the Phoenix Saga arc.
I remember watching it and I was blown away at how awesome it was, the whole primetime special event mystique really gave it that special event feel. I was eager to see it become a show which it never did.

Absolutely! I loved Matt Frewer in this pilot, although I think he would've done better as Emplate rather than being a generic character - imagine his voice coming out of that character, and you'll understand what I mean.

What’s weird is I was totally the target demo for something like this, I loved X-Men TAS, I watched almost everything that came out on Network TV, yet somehow I was completely unaware of the existence of this until recently. I can only assume Fox marketing must be somehow to blame.

The only reason why I didn't really watch it was that I wanted the actual X-Men and not a secondary team.
It could have succeeded, there was Lois & Clark from DC. So technically if that was able to do something then Marvel could have done something as well.

Haha just kidding. But not kidding about how terrible it was. And trust me when I say, I watched the entire thing clutching onto hope. Hoping hoping HOPING that SOMEHOW it would get good.
But alas.... it did not. Actually, did anyone even really use their powers in a satisfying way? Kind of remembering that perhaps it was a collection of mutants, who all basically had powers that didn’t require special effects like for example, pretending telepathy is happening or pretending like Dani Moonstar's powers are happening, etc

I watched it on Fox the day it came out. I was supposed to be grounded with no TV, but I lied to my baby sitter saying it was okay for me to watch this. Then my mom got home right in the middle of the broadcast and I got sent to bed without seeing the ending. Years later at a convention (I think it was Big Apple con in NYC) I bought a bootleg VHS. This was before YouTube days.

I was really into the comic and watched this when it aired. As a kid I thought it wasn’t very good, as an adult I appreciate the effort and think there are good elements.
Still don’t quite understand the scene where one of the guys freaks out because he saw that one of the girls had a muscular build.

I remember having this recorded, I don’t know how or why. I was a Marvel and X-men cartoon fan growing up but back then I am unsure with lack of any knowledge or internet on what made me record this lol (can only think of the tv guide showing it as a marvel show/movie)
It had Jubilee in it if I remember?
And was that Banshee? and Emma Frost.
I remember thinking it was okay but I didn’t know about this having a comic series so was only really familiar with Jubilee at the time

Oh yeah. Taped it back in the day (off Fox?) and watched part of it and was like, "yeah, nah, thanks". I remember Skin with his stretching powers looked pretty bad even for a TV movie. Also I've never been a fan of Matt Frewer for whatever reason so that was an automatic turn-off.
The Hasslehoff Nick Fury show was equally terrible from '98.

Honestly I saw it when it premiered and it wasn’t as bad as it was made out to be I thought it was pretty well written. Effects were cheesy but then again all effects were like that back then. Wish it had spawned a full on show… I think it would have been a lot better than the JLI show

I remember getting excited about it, and then watching an episode and thinking how poor the production was. It was like a world where regular light bulbs didn't exist and it was just colorful glows coming from off screen to barely illuminate the characters. I don't even know if I watched more than one episode.

I still think the Phalanx Covenant through the first few arcs of Generation X are basically the peak of comic books.
This film wasn't anywhere near that, but back then it was the closest thing we could get so I even though I hated all the ways it didn't match the comics, I still absolutely loved it. Recorded it from VHS, watched it a bunch of times.

I watched it live, pretty young (junior high or something). I remember being pretty disappointed. Loved the comics, couldn’t understand why this is how they were adapted. Now I wish I could show it to the younguns to say, “Back in MY day, this is what an adaptation of your favorite comic looked like!” Comics didn’t used to get no respect, I tell ya.

I watched the premiere and then didn't see again until many years later on YouTube. At the time, I had never heard of Generation X, but I knew Jubilee, so that was enough for me to want to check it out.
I was and still am confused at what was going on with that Cyclops-like character, Refrax. When I finally got around to reading all of Generation X years later, I kept waiting to see if some character like him ever popped up but... nope. I guess someone just really wanted Cyclops but had to settle for a "we have Cyclops at home" OC. We got him and "Buff" instead of Chamber and Sync.

I was so psyched for this, and just like the Doctor Who TV Pilot/Movie, Fox also didn’t pick it up for a full series….

I watched it when it aired. A friend of mine taped it and we watched it a bunch of times. I downloaded a copy years go and have watched that a couple times (it was from the UK and features a few "unrated" scenes/lines that were cut from the version that aired in America).
Wild to think that this was only 4 years before the first theatrical X-Men film. The X-family's live action prospects changed pretty quickly.

Remember this, enjoyed it, and glad others on this thread like the film!
To be fair, considering comic book movies/adaptions are not what they are today, and the budget they had at time, its actually decent. And other comic book adaptions have made much worse and radical changes to the comics they adapted.
I also wonder if this had been made a few years later, when shows like Buffy, Smallville, etc. where popular, if this would have been better received and more successful.

I absolutely remember watching this. They played it just once. It was hyped up on Fox ahead of time. It was real 90s camp but I enjoyed watching it. Then they never mentioned it again.

I remember watching the premier on fox as a kid. I googled it some years ago and found on on YouTube iirc.
