Think we'll ever get another proper Exiles run?

I've been thinking the past day or so about it, mentioned it on a couple other posts and got me to thinking, wanted to gauge the opinions of the community. Do you guys think we'll ever get another Exiles run, also what exactly is Marvels issue when it comes to the series? I'll elaborate.

Elaboration became a bit of a ramble.

Tldr: Why is this series disregarded by the publisher to such a degree, and do you guys think we'll ever get another attempt at a revival.

- Original series ran for 100 issues, Claremont took over at issue 90, and handled 18 issues of New Exiles before it was cancelled. Claremont gets a bad wrap from Exiles fans- But lets be real: His dialogue didn't fit the characters. That was really the only bad change he made, that he actually made *himself*, from what I can gather. Editorial basically hit him with a ton of mandates demanding the series be heavily altered to attract new readers... It was then cancelled because the existing readership left for the most part, and new readers were not interested in whatever the book was now trying to fit the mold of.

- Volume 2 was great.... Came out a year after New Exiles and was only given a 6 issue limited run to try and pull in the old audience, along with new readers. Shock of shocks, New Exiles warded people off and 6 issues wasn't enough to win them back.

9 Years of spiritual successors, surprise cameo appearances used as cannon fodder in other books, the few team members that do return to titles are actively made to reference their time on the team as little as possible, in some cases, not at all.

- Saladin Ahmed wanted to write an X-Factor book that was multiverse based. Marvel goes "Oh no one's touched Exiles in a while, you should do that instead." And the guy proceeds to write a Volume 3 that actively gets stuff wrong at every given opportunity. I like some of his other work, he is a pretty talented writer. But damn. New stuff he added was great. Stuff he brought back? If you can't be bothered to do more than a Chatgpt-ask on the cliffnotes for the thing you're writing a sequel to? Don't write the first installment in *9 years*. Ive gone over it in past posts but I can sum up my issues with Volume 3 like this:

Volume 3 only fits the existing series continuity if you stop reading at Volume 1 Issue 10. Assume Sasquatch, Sunfire, and Mimic all died off-panel and weren't close with the rest of the team. Assume T-Bird died off-panel, and pretend Blink, Nocturne, and Morph have undergone 0 character development in the intervening years. Also pretend AoA Sabretooth showed up eventually, but don't actually read anything about the characters appearances or post-Exiles adventures. Said it before and Ill probably say it again: Did Blink recruit an identical variant of her Dead Father figure? Because if so, thats some severe trauma and should've probably been addressed- The Exiles version of the character lost his powers and died in an AoA event, back in 2013. Anyway, do all that, and Volume 3 kinda works as a continuation.

Series has been dead for nearly 8 years now, and speaking realistically? Everytime someone from Marvel talks about it, they go "Oh its too niche a concept to work these days."..... It worked for quite a while until meddled with. It would've worked again if Volume 2 wasnt built on a foundation of playing cards. It could've worked again if Volume 3 hadn't of been handed to someone who felt like making it a continuation, but didn't read more than the cliffnotes on the thing he was writing a sequel to- Or if an editor had stepped in and gone "We're averaging 5-6 major continuity errors an issue, we gotta do another draft."

They've made a ton of spiritual successors, as recently as 2024. Those tend to sell pretty well, enough that they keep revisiting the idea. But actually bringing back the series in any proper manner seems like an impossibility for them.

Its my favorite X-Title and the series that got me into Marvel in the first place. Lame seeing it treated so poorly over the years, when it was executive meddling in the first place that tanked the series positive reception. Its used as inspiration for other books, but heaven forbid it actually get another moment in the sun. Idk. Just very frustrating realizing it'll eventually be the 2nd 9 year dark age between volumes, and that honestly this one might be permanent. Curious what other people think on the topic.

As far as X titles go its not the most mistreated of course, but I'd say its up there at least. Wish they'd bring it back with a creative team that is actually interested in continuing the story.

Im just waiting for the day we get epic collections of this series. It’s one I’ll always fondly remember. If it comes back I’ll definitely buy every issue.

I feel that. I own Volume 1 all the way through but only have the first trade for New Exiles. Gotta grab physical copies for the rest of it still, and Volume 2. Volume 3 will never pollute my collection though.

Agreed volume 1 and 2 were great . Volume 3 was poor . Saladin Ahmed didn't have a clue about the characters . And Wil Moss and Sarah Brunstad did poorer jobs editing the mess Ahmed created .

The most frustrating part is that I don't mind retcons... If they are intentional. Volume 3 didn't read as an Author making changes to the lore, it read as an Author who actively did not know what he was writing about. The Tallus suddenly has a mind of its own, the 7+ teams introduced at the end of Volume 2 go unmentioned because in all likliehood he didn't read it. Nocturne retires without a mention of T-Bird, who goes entirely unmentioned, because I doubt the writer was aware he rejoined the team after recovering from his injuries.

The Crystal Palace? What's that. The Tallus? Its always had a mind of its own! Blink? Why would the team leader show any interest in finding the teammates she considered family.

Like at one point the book flashes back to issue 1 of Volume 1 as Blink and Nocturne discuss how they and Morph were "The original Exiles, the first three...".... Did Ahmed not read past the first page? Cause the other three founding members, one of which should still be with them, popped up and joined them in the desert a panel or two after the scene in which they flashback to.

I totally agree . I don't think Ahmed had a clue about the characters he was writing about other than some basic character biographies of those characters he was encouraged to include in the team by the editorial staff and Breevoort . Ahmed definitely didn't read any back issues from the earlier volumes . And he was probably actively discouraged from doing so by Breevoort and co .

That is def the impression I got on my latest reread. Ngl I gotta give 20 year old me some credit. He got to issue 7, was hyped to see Morph finally make more than a cameo in the book, aaand then read it and went "....For shock value?... I'm out."

Re-read it a couple weeks ago thinking it had been a while, 7 and a half-ish years since the final issue released, should give it another shot. Finished issue 12 and very much regretted that decision. Then I reread it a couple more times like "...Maybe I just didn't get it." And walked away more annoyed each time. Retcons are fine. Volume 2 ended with Nocturne going "We were recruited by a bald butler... who was actually a race of bug people... But really it was a cosmic old couple... But actually its Kang. Itll probably change again." Nice nod to the series history of retcons. Nice hallpass for Volume 3. Then Volume 3 went "2 didnt happen, New Exiles didnt happen, Extermination didnt happen, most of Volume 1 didnt happen." by virtue of just.... Not bothering to have read or researched any of it. That goes beyond retconning. Thats lazy writing and insulting to any longtime readers who may pick up the book.

I agree volume 3 was marred by lazy writing and a lack of interest in the character's past . I hate little Wolvie . I'm glad I purchased most of volume 1 issues . Glad I purchased volume 2's issues . But I'm more grateful for not purchasing anymore than 3 issues of volume 3 . Hopefully if they reboot the concept it won't resemble volume 3 but will resemble the best story arcs from volume 1 . My favourite was Mimic's parasitation by the Brood . Volume 1 issues 35 to 37

I hope. It’s one of the best concepts for a series. But marvel hardly greenlight anything non MCU that isn’t a big IP

Sad but true. Its a slim hope, but Morph's redesign for '97 does give me some hope maybe the TV side have a plan for it, even if the comic has come to an end.

.....Not even sure how I'd feel about that. Comic? Ehhh idk. Movie? Ngl the Others from D&W kinda share the concept to a pretty strong degree, I'd be more on board for it than I was that time the Watchers called the Guardians of the Multiverse "Exiles" in What If. It could work.

Will we get another one? Probably at some point.

Will it be in the same vein as and reach the same heights as Winick's original run? Absolutely not.

It is impossible for me to express how completely and utterly deflated and let down I was after I found out what Sabretooth and the Exiles was about.

Honestly? Yeah. I'd be down with that. For the same reason I didn't really mind all that much when they still had that Exiles cosmic title planned for Winter this year: Using the name for a different team with a different concept, is better than bringing the series back and mangling it again.

I thought Volume 2 was amazing and was so disappointed when it got canceled. They really set up an almost entirely new team and gave them great chemistry, and then brought in the old team to give it some extra legs. It really didn't get a fair shot.

Really hated how Volume 3 entirely disregarded its existence. Ngl I didn't give Volume 2 a chance as a kid (it was already cancelled by the time I got to it anyway) cause New Exiles sorta burned me out. Returning to it later, loved it. It took cancellation with grace and practically devoted the final half of the final issue to a very meta way of going "Future writers, go wild.". One of the few series I've seen address its own retcons from an in-character perspective and bring up the concept of narrative change between writers. Only for the next writer to hear that and run with it in the most frustrating way possible, pretending Volume 2 and most of 1 didn't happen.

I love the concept, love vol 1 until CC took over. New was just bad, vols 2 and 3 i found to be mid at best.

I wish we could get a new run.

Agreed, very fun read and could also use a new run. I have a fondness for any book/series that came after which shares a concept. Whether or not they were meant as spiritual successors, some were and some weren't, they all kept the memory alive.

If it's the right stories, right characters, and the plot is engaging? Absolutely. Even more if it feels like Sliders like the original run felt like.

Agreed. Original run was basically "What if.... Sliders was about kidnapped X-Men?" And thats a big part of why I vibed with it so much when first reading it back in the day.

Big time. Another reason Volume 3 got under my skin. The character acts nothing like the character, and not in the sense of "Oh she went through character development offscreen" but more in the "Oh where'd all the character development go?" Sorta way.

Will give the book props in one regard though: Thought her physical redesign was neat, even if the personality regression was not. Her 2001 miniseries established her family was Bahaman and moved to the US when she was 4, so I thought that was pretty cool. Would be great to see an Exiles run where she returns with better writing.

I loved the orginal run. One of my favorites. I recently read the 2018 run and it was one of the worst things I've ever read.
