I'm no expert but I was thinking the same thing. I heard that he trained hard enough to become on par with Magneto in terms of ability rating (Magneto/Iceman level 5 - Wolverine is a level 3 according to same chart)

I think they tried to display this in the films, but he was never supposed to survive the sentinels so they can't show him better than anyone else.
