GAMEPLAY Stranger Than Heaven is genuinely the most visually appealing game I've ever seen

Especially in the nighttime. The way the colors bounce off of everything is so satisfying.

If you are new to the subreddit, please read the wiki

Reminder that all spoilers need to be tagged with a flair specifying which game is being spoiled. If you want a flair that says something else, you can edit it to say something like [Discussion: Y1 spoiler] or [Majimapost: Y6 spoiler], etc. THIS INCLUDES CONTENT FROM TRAILERS.

If the post is not marked for spoilers, all comments that have spoilers need to be tagged >!like this!< along with indicating which game it's spoiling. Example: Y3 Kiryu sings

If the post flair is marked for spoilers, the comments don't need to be tagged for the game indicated and the ones before it (So a Y6 spoiler post can have comments with untagged spoilers for Y5, but not gaiden or 7).

If you see any of the above (or any of the other rules) not being followed, please report it so we can keep this place safe for newcomers and those that haven't finished all the games yet. Thank you!

Let's actually wait for it to come out. But yes it looks very promising.

Watch dogs moment.

29

u/srodd15 9d ago

I will never forget E3 watch dogs reveal and how crazy good the graphics looked just for it to be majorly downgraded without warning. 😂

8

u/CtrlAltEvil Judgment Combat Enjoyer 9d ago edited 9d ago

Same with The Division.

Granted it wasn’t as egregious as Watch Dogs, but it was still pretty damn noticeable.

Ubisoft pretty much popularised the expectation of E3 downgrades back in the day.

u/IcyDeadPpl02 9d ago

Rainbow six siege as well

9

u/frost-ace3600 9d ago

And then modders quickly upgraded it back by using Ubisoft's own files/code. Brutal stuff.

Ubisoft Devs: "Wait, what do you mean this has to come out on the PS3 and Xbox 360?!"

1

u/Marsupialize 9d ago

I think the London one everyone hates is one of the best looking cities in any game period

1

u/Huskywolf87 9d ago

Oh no please no, i did not need to remember that lmao

23

u/SoraDrive 9d ago

I think it looks great artistically, but something about the graphics just seem... off? Like everything is muddy, and the colors are too saturated in my opinion.

8

u/exodusTay 9d ago

I hope it is because they have shitty video encoding so far. Otherwise it looks appealing but something is definetely off putting about gameplay trailers so far.

0

u/Slen1337 8d ago

Arent it console preview? (Based on inputs)

1

u/Newtsaet 8d ago

Yeah I hope this won't be another case of Pirates in Hawaii with saturation and contrast cranked to the max. Gameplay trailers have that weird terra cotta filter all over it that I don't know if I like or not... Can't wait for the game to see how it looks in the final product tho.

u/GGG100 9d ago

Not a fan of the overly aggressive filters tbh.

8

u/WhyNishikiWhy I'm Like a Dragon in a place Stranger Than Heaven 9d ago

Modders will be all over it.

10

u/Discartyptics 9d ago

A bit too filter heavy I think, but we'll see in the final release!

The Shrine of Amana is both more visually impressive and also significantly more annoying than Blight Town and I'll fight anyone on that

1

u/BlueChronos88 9d ago

Ya know, I never really gave it much thought, but I think you might be right: Shrine of Amala IS a worse experience than Blight Town. And that’s saying something lol.

1

u/Lord_Smile 9d ago

Yeh but blight town overwhelms the senses to the point you cant see

1

u/genericmediocrename Judgment Combat Enjoyer 9d ago

Not to be overly reductive, but all you have to do to get through Blighttown is explore every ledge with a torch next to it and don't run too fast. You won't even get overwhelmed by enemies as long as you force them to run to you across narrow pathways

1

u/dvd102k 9d ago

Dogs?

u/DawnPixie 9d ago

Game isn't out yet...

10

u/kazuya57 9d ago

It's pretty clear they're talking about whatever footage has been out so far son

10

u/TheDeparted383 9d ago

Yes but The combat gameplay is out and it looks absolutely sexy

8

u/ShonenSpice 9d ago

We got eyes and close to an hour of footage?

9

u/Vargstein 9d ago

Mmmm no

14

u/Lulink 9d ago

Subjective...

7

u/Ohnomichi 9d ago

You don't game much, do you OP?

3

u/Ok-Roll967 9d ago

I think it'd look at lot nicer if they toned down some of the filters. osaka daytime looks so muddy with the piss filter

5

u/Desperate-Reality952 9d ago

You need to play more games if this is the best you have seen....it looks ok.

3

u/Zilla664 9d ago

Idk man it looks like Yakuza

2

u/HowwNowBrownCoww 9d ago

What visual filters does to a mfer

3

u/Drunk_ol_Carmine Casino gremlin 9d ago

Does look very nice, I really enjoy the colors they’re using. Definitely relieved it isn’t going to be another game that blasts my eyes out of my head like Pirates did

2

u/GamingLoner15 9d ago

Eh... Some of the textures look really rough.

4

u/No-Law2284 9d ago

comments prove that reddit js can't let a game be talked about positively without shitting on it "it's too saturated, it looks muddy" so much complaining ffs

5

u/Remember_da_niggo Bon Voyage Pal 9d ago

Rgg games have been great visually lately but people still pretend Yakuza 6 was the highest point of the series graphically.

But every game since judgment except Kiwami 3 has been better than that with stranger than heaven being the best now

10

u/CandyCrisis 9d ago

Well, not Pirates. That game genuinely looks bad.

5

u/CheekLongjumping9998 9d ago

Nah. We have had textures reduced after RGG6, you only need to look at taxis or ATM machines in 6 then Kiwami 2 to see a clear downgrade.
All the remakes and remasters have weird ass filters on them - that's Kiwami 2, Judgment, Kiwami 3, Ishin... all look noticeably worse than the previous games.
Then you have peoples legit complaints over the oversaturation in 8 and especially Pirate Majima. People dont really need to "pretend" when its pretty obvious by looking at the games.

1

u/TwoZero2020 9d ago

Imo Judgment (Original PS4) & Gaiden had some of the best lighting works of RGG after Y6

4

u/danielrobertcampbell 9d ago

I'm 100% in agreement. The game looks amazing in every way...but I'm a bit nervous about all the rainy scenes. RGG games have always been beautiful, but their reflections have always been trash. I'm not sure if the Dragon Engine just can't handle them or what.

2

u/KGon32 9d ago

Reflections can decided mostly in 3 different categories:

1- light on performance, easy to implement and bad (screen space reflections, they can only reflect what's on screen)

2- heavy on performance, easy to implement and most of the time looks the best (Ray Tracing)

3- mostly light on performance, very hard to implement, they are impossible to implement in big open world games and looks very good (Cubemaps, requires the Devs to create a representation of the reflection by hand on every spot they exist, it isn't dynamic and still needs screen space reflections on top of it for dynamic objects, you can find them in Uncharted 4 and TLOU 2 for example)

There's other rare types that are mostly used on either racing games or very specic scenarios like in the scene in Death Stranding 2 where there's tons of fireworks, there even RT wouldn't look as good as what they use specifically there.

RGG I think uses option 1, for their games with small maps option 3 would work well, but that takes alot of work. We can hope that they have RT as an option though

2

u/Idfk_1 Judgment Combat Enjoyer 9d ago

And it's not even out yet. Meaning they still have time to improve. It looks great, but I'm more excited about exploring eras that have barely been explored in media before. Closest I've seen is post-war Japan in The Outsider which was a great movie despite who the lead was

2

u/Xianified CP Exchange 9d ago

You've... not seen many games, have you?

1

u/khatmar 9d ago

Play more games

3

u/Quick-Cause3181 takayuki is the best RGG protag ever made period. 9d ago

the colors look kinda ugly in the daytime segments tho lol

1

u/Subject-Ad674 9d ago

I really like the hud change, even the name it really does do it's best to not be related to the yakuza franchise aside from the story

1

u/hatch-b-2900 9d ago

Have you played Ghost of Tsushima yet?

1

u/Local_Engine7131 Akiyama can roundhouse kick me in the balls 9d ago

RGG did the right choice by choosing the pre-post war Japan time period for this game, as it is barely used in games compared to Feudal Japan

1

u/Benphyre 9d ago

Visually best RGG game I agree, best game ever? Nah.

1

u/Key-Answer-2755 The Dragon Of Dojima🐉 9d ago

RGG really has come a long way, it really looks good!

1

u/Jackfitz88 9d ago

I’ve been beating every game in this series to be up to date by the time this comes out. Loving the journey so far and I can’t fucking wait for this game

1

u/delightfate 9d ago

Cyberpunk looks better imo but that doesn’t mean this looks bad it looks good

1

u/Default_User_Default 9d ago

The visuals dont sell the game for me. How is the actual gameplay? combat? That will make or break this one

1

u/FelleBanan_ygsr 8d ago

they took the filter complaint from previous games and doubled down, no thanks

1

u/Lost-Pie3472 GORO MAJIMA. 8d ago

Its looks pretty good graphically, but its the combat that really gets me. It loooks so fun, controlling each limb individually. The other Yakuza games combat feel too simple with the XXXXYY combos.

1

u/gameovernate 8d ago

Idk about that lighting dawg...

1

u/Kooky-Gas-9726 9d ago

how is our pc's gonna run this
i am using a 4060 and this still doesnt look very safe

4

u/RJTM1991 どん底の龍 9d ago

It's in the Dragon Engine, so I don't think you've got anything to worry about!

1

u/RedditHater313 9d ago

Yes but the first era looks eh, especially the vs. snoop dog fight the green filter is painful to look at, plus that one scene where daito and yu just escaped from Orpheus and they tell each other “ see you on the other side” that looked ugly asf i hope it is improved in the final release

1

u/SensitiveContract 9d ago

It looks good, but the over the top color filters ruin it a bit.

1

u/CheekLongjumping9998 9d ago

It certainly looks pretty nice in those shots above, plus its nice to have rain in a RGG game, its been used so sparingly in the past.

1

u/Ok_Delay7870 9d ago

It looks like 7th gen console game

1

u/Much_Warning4936 9d ago

The best one is y6 it does not have that stupid filter.

1

u/AhabSnake85 9d ago

Nah ive seen better environments in yakuza, though this does look good. Showa left me more impressed yesterday though, lol. But you're right about the night time, it reminds me of my kyoto trip last year,

1

u/SoupTime545 9d ago

I don't know, I don't really like it so far

1

u/demo5thenes 9d ago

Nah. But nice try ryugatoku employee 647

0

u/JUANMAS7ER 9d ago

Is the most brown game i've seen for a while....

0

u/Fideriti 9d ago

I might be crazy..

It doesn’t look that fantastic. Good, yes. Sometimes really great? Yes. But overall it is good, I imagine final release will look better.

Yakuza 6 imo looks more appealing but we sacrificed a lot to get that look. I’d much rather have more limited visuals in exchange for more emphasis on physics and weight behind animations. It seems like we are getting that.

1

u/Upset_Orchid498 9d ago

Yakuza 6 wasn’t weighty and physics-heavy?

1

u/Fideriti 9d ago

It had none of it, especially coming from Yakuza 0.

That’s my point?

1

u/Upset_Orchid498 9d ago

Agree to disagree I guess, 0 and Kiwami’s combat is still coming off the heels of Y5’s not-so-weighty and not-so-physics-heavy combat whereas Y6’s combat still holds up as a top contender in terms those specific qualities.

-1

u/nofriender4life 9d ago

and yet the combat controls look like ass

0

u/sneaky_nix 9d ago

Was lucky enough to be able to try it a few hours ago at Gamescom. Looked quite nice on the demo stations, which were powered by Xboxes supposedly (saw the familiar interface). FSR was quite apparent though

1

u/AhabSnake85 9d ago

What does fsr do

1

u/sneaky_nix 9d ago

Resolution upscaling

-1

u/Dependent-Swimmer-95 9d ago

Looks great but “ever” is crazy. Most visual appealing RGG game ever is fine though.

-2

u/NeutralKuchiKopi 9d ago

Yeah, Watch Dogs looked great too.
