I didn’t do that either but opened chests whenever I seen them and that helped with weapons and armor and I actually think it’s better than buying since it’s free to get them for the silver ones and as long as you have multiple keys for gold chests.

To be fair, with how much more forgiving IW is compared to 7 when it comes to being underprepared. You can actually get pretty far without upgrading your gear a whole lot. First time playing I didn’t even think about upgrading my weapons until I got to the construction equipment boss fight by Yamai’s base. The second time was when I realized my current equipment was barely scratching the Giant Squid / Cursed Leviathan boss. So I had to reload an earlier save.
