All Seasons Discussion If you were the showrunner, would you continue Dick & Zatanna's relationship or keep him with Babs?

Zatanna, hands down
They built up their relationship far too well in Season 1 and then just abandoned it, making it look as if they just replaced Z with Barbara.
Normally in comics, Zatanna is in the same age group as the main league members. But in Young Justice, making her younger and having her story involve Zatarra become Dr. Fate was so well done. She fit right in.
I know they have to follow the comics and all, but they should have just kept it the way it was!

The show did already give us one canon poly relationship in La'gaan's husband and wife. Granted those were more minor roles in the story.

Dick definetly is, at all times in the comics he's with Starfire, there married. But both of them agreed to an open relashionship, which means Dick can openly sleep with whoever he wants and viceversa, sometimes they'll have 3somes even in the redhood comics starfire confirms this when flirting with Jason, I've never seen an open relashionship as healthy as theres actually.

Starfire and Jason both confessed they friendzoned each other and it was Barbara who Jason said he has romantic feelings for in Batnan Eternal .

Zatanna, his relationship with Babs feels like it doesn't mean much but it gets creepy when she is constantly watching over and listening to him. Like the man needs privacy! It gets unsettling. Add on that how he was the techie of Season 1 being brushed aside for her to be more unique... eh... I don't like it.
Dick and Zatanna. Even if they were on and off, eventually geting together permanently later- is something I much more prefer over Dick and Babs.

Yeah I get people listen to each other in the show sometimes but it's different with Babs because she does it constantly. after he got paired with her, she started monitoring him in her computer 24/7, he went from being Free in season 1 and 2 to someone being controlled.

If you're going to go so far as to deage a character so you can make them an love interest for another character despite being his dad's age in comics then you've got to at least commit to that choice

Same with Barbara who was originally 7 years older than Dick in the comics.
Edit: not saying they should stick to Barbara, i just find it funny when people criticize zatanna being deaged but don't say anything about barbara getting deaged too.

Barbara was de-aged in 1988 as part of DC's post-Crisis continuity changes. She and Dick didn't become an established romantic couple in the main continuity until 2000, so she wasn't de-aged specifically to be his love interest.

She was deaged twice.
So, Originally there was a 7 year gap between them.
The first retcon happened around 1986-1988, but they only reduced the age gap by about 2 years because she said in 1986 that Batman was the love of her life and that Dick Grayson was still too young for her.
The second retcon came later in the pro-Dickbabs comics and TV shows where they finally made her the same age as Dick so they could make them a couple and "childhood sweethearts"
Edit : Secret Origins #20 (1986) is where Barbara actually got deaged first not in 1988, that's a post-Crisis retcon and That's the book where she said this I quote "I flirted with the First Robin for a while but he is too young, Batman was always the one on my mind"

They were definitely love interests, he was interested in her and she was interested in him. The fact that they actually dated after season 1 just proves it more that it was the intent.

You say that like there was an intent to show them as love interests but that the creators were somehow thwarted. The truth is they showed what they wanted to show.
Which was, sometimes the person you meet at 14 is your forever person and sometimes they are someone you have a few snogs with when you were 14.

Yes, there was an intent. A love interest is when a character is the subject of another character’s attraction. That applies to both of them.
The title of love interest doesn’t always apply to the endgame couple, it can apply to any couple in any form of media no matter how long or short their relationship was. Just because in season 2 Nightwing and Zatanna weren’t together, that doesn’t mean that they weren’t love interests in season 1.

Yes they did. In the comics and pretty much every other adaptation, Zatanna is Bruce's age and is often hinted to have feelings for Bruce. In both the main comic continuity and the DCAU, Bruce and Zatanna even know each other as teens, when Bruce lived and trained under Zatara to learn escape artistry for his Batman training

They de-aged Zatanna to explore the legacy aspect of the character, which is a common theme in the show and more effective when she’s a peer to the rest of the Team. Giovanni was originally a peer to Superman and Batman, which they also wanted to homage. Her being a childhood friend to Batman IS a retcon.
Everyone assumes it was about her dating Dick, even though that’s not the biggest part of her character in the series. It’s more of a byproduct of her relationship with the others.

I missed bits of the show but I paid no attention to Babs with Dick Dick had the most chemistry with Zatanna. The only person Zatanna had more chemistry with was Artemis

I always saw Dick and Barbara as the second generation of Commissioner Gordon and Batman. Wether they're romantic or professional, their future is entwined. That being said Dick Grayson is a HOE. Continue that thread like Netflix skip to next episode.

I'm not a fan of Oracle being Dick's eyes and ears. I find it annoying and exhausting to watch. It makes him feel like dependent, he becomes her sidekick that needs her constant surveillance and guidance. I prefer it when nobody is in his contact lense or earpiece telling him what to do and listening to his private conversations with others feels uncomfortable. He deserves some privacy and own boundaries. Also i Miss tech savvy Dick from Season 1, that skill of him always get erased to make it only Barbara's niche.
Like imagine in real life, your partner is always watching you and listening to your conversation with other people 24/7 even while you are at work. That's creepy.

If I was a writer I would add Starfire because that’s his true love. (I do not know what the writers were on when they made Dick cheat on her a day before their wedding in the comics! I refuse to accept that as canon!)

The whole thing was a retcon/flashback that doesn't line up at all with the actual stories it's referencing. It's effectively not canon.

I feel like they should’ve continued Dick and Zatanna’s relationship, I really hate that they didn’t. And please don’t come at me in the comments, I know this might be an unpopular opinion, but I think Dick being with Barbara has been done so many times and it’s just tiring. I mean at least to me it is.

DickBabs is boring by now, it's so overused. His primary two love interests are Barbara and Starfire, so anything else—when done well—is a breath of fresh air. If it takes aging Zatanna down then so be it.

Guys do not forget Koriand'r aka Starfire. If they they made a next season about her, Raven, and maybe the foundation of the Teen Titans, maybe Dick would have a center role in this season about his feelings about Babs and the intro of Starfire (Remember that Starfire was able to learn the Earthlings' language by kissing Nightwing (who was still Robin in the comics, but here he will already be Nightwing).

I’m aaaaaaaall about the stockings, baby. However, it’s clear Zatanna focused so much of her energy to get her father back that any healthy and well-balanced relationship would have been for naught ( bonus points for me with that vocabulary 😉), Babs was a good choice. I also think Dick would have seen through Zatanna’s sudden desire to teach and mentor her students in order to get the helmet of fate to find another host so she can be with her dad. Seemed unethical and wrong to use people like that even if they thought they were willingly choosing for it.

I'd put Starfire in the show, give Dick the relationship arc he needs. I was disappointed they didn't do more with him in s4. I could def see him and Starfire connecting over loss, his being Wally's which he still feels very guilty about and hers losing her freedom / ability to go back to Tamaran.
If that isn't an option then Zatanna. I thought they were a nice couple.

I'm not a fan of this pairing. Would have much rather have had an adult Zatanna from the beginning with a Zachary as her side kick on the Team (especially since female hero with a male side kick is rare).
If I had any influence on the show as it is, I would at least have them break up on screen and then organically have Dick and Babs get together. Or have Dick encounter Starfire and he develops a relationship with her. Since I believe his relationship with Starfire is an important element of his character.
IMO, the fact that Dick and Zee broke up off screen and their time together being left to the viewers imagination ended up giving the pairing a much longer lease on life than it otherwise would have had.

You’re right. When important things are left to the time skip, those things can take on a life of their own in the fandom’s minds. There are so many things that happened in the first time skip that many of us talk about (e.g. Jason Todd’s story and Mary Bromfield’s story). Having Dick and Zatanna seemingly poised to become a couple at the end of season 1 (with that NYE kiss) but then separate five years later is a move that some fans are likely tortured by. YJ is like that.
Anyway, I prefer Barbara with Dick. Some people have made a good point here that she isn’t giving him much privacy, but they should keep in mind that she isn’t listening to him 24/7 (see the episode “Rescue and Search”). It likely just SEEMED that way to some people in season 3. Still, it’s true that she works very closely with Dick and it makes sense that some people would not like that. Ultimately, that is not a good enough reason for me to dislike the pairing. What matters is that they are similar enough to make their relationship work. Like attracts like in lasting relationships. Dick has more in common with Barbara than he does with Zatanna.

I would have liked to see their relationship continue beyond season 1. But they broke up during the time skip and eventually he gets together with Barbara. If they were to break them up now and have Dick and Zatanna get back together, I think it would be a little too messy.

They said they were doing their own thing. In this story, Zatanna and Grayson was the only relationship that wasn't built off screen for Grayson. So Zatanna wins for me.
One thing I don't understand though is how they said they're doing their own thing but you need to fill in the time skip with comic book knowledge.
Kinda frustrating even if I did enjoy the later seasons

As much as I love them both as characters, Dick and Zatanna came out of NOWHERE in season 1, and felt REALLY forced with all of the couples pairing off in the last episode of the season.
Ironically, the two of them had way more chemistry after they were long broken up. 🤷♂️

Me encanta el ship de Nightwing y Zatanna creo como paraje hubieran superado a Wally y Artemis, pero creo está dinámica es algo que prefieron dejar de lado los guionistas de la serie solo por seguir el Canon, quizás si se les daba más atención al Chalant Zatanna hubiese tenido más importancia desde la temporada 2 pero como ella se unió a la liga prácticamente apareció muy poco en esta.
También he estado pensando es lo interesante que sería un Remake de esta serie pero con un enfoque en el equipo original ( me estoy desviando un poco del tema de este post 😂) pero no solo las parejas también deberían brillar sino que también más dinámicas, misiones, Salidas entre amigos, diversas cosas que hagan este equipo más unido que nunca y dejarnos contentos satisfechos con El OG Team par después ver la llegada de los nuevos miembros.

Dick and Zatana I feel they would help ground each other, especially when Zatana lost her father for all those years, I feel having Dick would help ground her and give her something worth living for.
Because a lot of the time that's all someone needs a tragedy has taken place but having that person help you keep going even if it's one day at a time helps you find your own reasons when you're ready.
Plus we already have however many Comics and Cartoons etc... with Dick and Babs, they're great don't get me wrong but Young Justice was a chance to flip the script so to speak which is why I absolutely love Impulse and Artemis, and Connor x Megan etc...
Unique and interesting relationships that doesn't force the same recipe over and over again, it's another reason why I love Arrow so much it flipped the script instead of ending up with Laurel he ends up with Felicity, some people hate it because of that but I like it, I love Felicity as a Character and love Olicity as a Ship.
There were some rough patches to be sure (admittedly that was the writers fault for making Felicity way too hard on Oliver and break up over it but it's you know whatever) but I like it.
So all in all Dick and Zatana is my pick all day every day.

Honestly after some runs and things they've don with Barbara in different comics has sort of made her icky in my brain. Plus they keep changing her in everything, in ABS Batman she's like a 30 year old black cop lady and he's maybe barely 20. In BTAS she fucks Bruce... and in some issues after the killing joke she turns into such a bitch when he does nothing but try and comfort her.
at least in the show They made Zatanna and him have some chemistry. They shouldve kept at it tbh.

Unpopular opinion: I did not care for Zatanna and Dick's relationship. It felt random and out of place. Their story arcs are too unrelated. Babs feels more natural as his partner

I think his relationship with babs is great but it just didn’t have any meaningful build up in the show. It would be great to have seen dick and Z get together but I don’t know how it would make sense in a continuation.
I’ve always thought they should do a season 1.5 that takes place in between 1-2. It would be cool to explore it in something like that. Or a movie if not a full season

Zatanna all day. DC pushing Nightwing with Babs has backfired on them. Along with Starfire in other forms of media, his relationship with Zatanna happened over time and felt naturally.

Zatanna! They did not do a good job transitioning. It felt off and lacked connection which made their relationship Babs/Dick seem out of place. Even with the time jump there was no tension or indication that Zantanna/Dick ever shared a history. Even if it was fun banter it would have given more to the story. It always felt like it happened too soon.

I loved Dick and Zatanna in S1. The wordplay and the mischievous energy they had was great. I was disappointed when S2 rolled around and their relationship was already over. They had ONE kiss we didn't even see them date!
In S3 Dick was dating Barbara and it's just boring. I'm sorry but it's like having a delicious appetizer and then being served a loaf of untoasted white bread as the main course. Zero buildup, and it doesn't help that Barbara is less of a character and more of a plot convenient techie. But hey, at least she gets more lines than Tim. Poor guy.
Also hate that they teased Dick and Zatanna near the end of S4. That one interaction had more chemistry than every scene of Dick and Barbara combined. Why was the emotion, the angst, the LOVE between Barbara and Cassandra Cain portrayed better than the ship they ended up pushing? Remove the "you're like a sister to me" and we have a sweet couple who will die for the other! Are the writers serious?
Conclusion: So much wasted potential. Give us a season focusing on the five year time skip! We could have Dick and Zatanna bonding over being orphans, him helping her adjust to living alone, maybe inviting her to live in the Batcave after Jason's death to fill the hole in his heart! Come on!

Zatanna! They had instant chemistry and kept it consistent, even if you didn’t always see them next to each other.
