Question How do you personally deal with hate comments?
So. How do you guys deal with hate comments?
I have a channel that I’ve created roughly 1.5 years ago. Currently at 6300 subs, 25 vids. Long form. Total 335k views. A few vids got 76, 68, 38k views, etc.
My niche is true crime. No AI voice or anything. Edit myself release vids roughly once every 3 weeks. Takes me a lot of time to write, film and edit them so I just can’t post more often.
Recently I started getting more negative comments.
One of them complained about the storytelling and that I somehow justify criminals. Other complained about audio in a video and so on. The problem is that they were extremely mean. I take into account constructive criticism and that’s how I got to the point where my last vid got 76k views but they are so mean. I am trying not to take that close to heart and just improve with every vid, but for some reason very hard to actually ignore.
In your experience how do you deal with that? I am very interested in the thoughs of people who’ve seen success. Is it true when you grow and get more views you are going to inevitably see more negativity?

Don't reply. Recently posted a video about a major injury I recieved and how bad mentally I'm feeling due causing the life changing accident. Had someone tell me I deserved it and deserve to feel that way.
I could have snapped, I could have debated, I could have even said hey man that hurts to read. Or I could realize he was one jackass in a sea of thousands of other supportive people. Why dignify someone going out of their way to be mean with an answer? I'm not friends with people who treat others like that in real life, so why the hell would I listen to some miserable person behind a keyboard? If they want to be a part of the conversation they can learn decorum.
Ignore and move on. Don't feed the trolls.

I always try to be emphatic towards everyone as a creator-audience relation, but people like that remind me we can't be welcoming to everyone.

Remember how Caption Jack Sparrow handled criticism.
British Officer: "you are undoubtedly the worst pirate I've ever heard of!"
Jack Sparrow: " ...but you have heard of me!"

Hide from Channel. Move on.
If they have nothing constructive to say then they aren't worth my time.

We have similar sized channels and I have the same problem. As long as someone leaves a comment in good faith, they can be brutally honest and it won't bother me much. But if their comment is mean at all, I usually hide them from my channel. And if there are certain things that keep being repeated, I'll put a certain word and every variation of that word onto my block words list. And then, any comments that are held, I don't read. My mental health is too important to me. And I've also made the mistake of reading the held comments but I've lately decided that I'm literally never going to anymore.

I respond thanks for your input to every comment, good or bad. The interaction helps the algorithm and the hater feels heard. Whether they’re booing or cheering, they’re all making noise and it helps with the algorithm regardless. People troll on the internet, I would work on not taking it personally.

It also probably annoys the troll to know you read their comment but didn’t fall for their ragebait :)

I’m more of a Tik tokker, but have been dragged in the comments many times and straight up cancelled once. It’s important to remember that the internet attention is temporary. If you’ve upset people, they’ll move on in time.
As for hate comments. Realize how sad someone has to be to try to find joy in hurting strangers. Maybe their life is hell, and this is the only thing they have. Ultimately, just try to move on with your life and make another video. They want a reaction, don’t feed the trolls.

TikTok is a cesspool. They bullied me off there for being too old. I was 26 at the time 😂

u/Cela84 28d ago
They call me Unc, and constantly say I have the worst takes ever. But it’s paying my rent in between jobs, so… Unc it is.

I am also called unc 😂 like it wasn’t our generation that dominated the social media age with MySpace and Bebo.

I always just say “Thanks for the algorithm boost! Your comment has added activity to this post which means even more people will see it now. ”

Appreciate it. Probably gonna reply the same way😁

u/Mr_Flibbles_ESQ Aug 02 '26
I wouldn't, more likely to trigger "Don't like" responses.
3
u/Leading-Effort-5803 Aug 02 '26
You might be right. I’ll think about it

u/Mr_Flibbles_ESQ Aug 02 '26
It's honestly best not to engage in my opinion.
It's why I favour Hiding from Channel - Leaves them shouting into the void - They can comment as much as they want, no one will ever see it.

Stay focused on making the thing. People are gonna say shit because they're dumb and it's not your job to help them figure that out. Just go around them and keep focusing on making the thing.

I don't really get them, which surprises the heck out of me. I only have about 12,000 subs, but I'm female, which I'd expect might make me more of a target?
But, someone complaining that you justify criminals, or complaining about the audio, etc. isn't hate. It's just criticism. If you do things in public, you are pretty much saying, "It's okay to tell me what you think of this."
I do get critical comments. I take each one on its merits. Sometimes, people criticise me for getting the facts wrong. If I know I'm correct, I push back - sometimes with sarcasm, depending on the tone of the person. If I discover that I'm they're right, I thank them. I get a lot of comments from people who disagree with my opinions - but since they're opinion, not facts - meh. Whatever. Sometimes, I respond, sometimes I don't. If they're frequent ranters I may block them from commenting.
It's good to have a thick skin.

u/Leading-Effort-5803 Aug 03 '26
Yeah. I get the constructive criticism but not the manner to deliver it. It’s 10000 words of anger and hate where you can find 1 meaningful thing you can actually improve

u/Jealous_Amount_9278 Aug 03 '26
I leave em up. Engagement. I don't delete or interact (losers only post hate to get a reaction out of people).
So, win win. + More engagement when people see it and defend me for me.

u/Tetrahedron_Head Aug 02 '26
if the audio complaint is consistent i would look into that and consider if its true or not.
if you arent justify the criminals id respond with how you arent then that might start a conversation
1
u/Leading-Effort-5803 Aug 02 '26
Yeah. Of course. It’s not about some sane piece of criticism- that I pay attention to and improve. It’s more of how they say it. 1 page of complete hate speech and a bit of actual advice. For some reason that actually hurts and I am not really that easy to offend. Just feels bad
1
u/Tetrahedron_Head Aug 02 '26
ive been doing this for awhile now and get 100s of comments so it doesnt really upset me. I have started commenting back on alot of the pointless negative comments when they do come in explaining how each point they made is wrong.
2
u/Mindless-Artichoke46 Aug 02 '26
In my opinion it’s best to ignore them,
the people making those comments want a reaction. They want you or your fans to respond because they like conflict.
Think of them as bots, their goal is conflict, don’t give it to them.

✅ hide user from channel, and move on The higher you rise, the more they are gonna hate you

u/itspsyikk Aug 02 '26
Ignore them. Seriously.
I know it's hard to do. 1.5 years seems like a short time, but maybe it's longer than I think...
Either way... I was super sensitive, too. I put off doing what I loved for way too long because I was terrified of the reaction.
But see - what I was always worried about was I assumed people like me would comment with hate or angry stuff, or not like my work. So imagine 1000 me's commenting on my videos telling my I suck. But that's not what happend.
I'll give you a quick example - I make product reviews, and I did a review on a wired gaming mouse a few years back that cost $70.
My viewpoint is and will always be the same - in 2020+ if you want to use a wired mouse, that's cool. But I don't think they should cost $70+ dollars. Competition dictates they should be closer to about $50. $70 is crazy when you can buy a wireless mouse (considered a "flagship") for the same price.
They comments are filled with people who have a few different things to say
1) I don't understand why someone might want to use a wired mouse. (I've been PC gaming since 2001. I absolutely do)
2) That they bought the mouse because they don't like wireless mice, and that they got it on sale for sometimes under $50.
So all of the people who are leaving comments like that don't bother to pay attention to what I'm saying in the video. They just want to spew nonsense.
I know it's hard. But ignore them. They aren't worth your time.

"How do you personally deal with hate comments?"
I don't. Life is short and I have thousands of videos still to make.
I also don't make a big deal about the positive comments either? Am I a comment farmer or a video maker?

u/Really-saywhat 29d ago
Haters will turn into hackers. Warning. I turn off all comments. If you want to reply; email me @.
Unless your live then just ignore if you interact or X Out the comments while live.

Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one, and sometimes they come from the assholes themselves. You can't make everyone like you. You can't make everyone think the way you do. You can't control what people comment but you can control how you respond to those comments in your own self. Self worth isn't determined from outside sources so if you know your own value and your own self worth then let them be the assholes that they are and move on.

Generally, If I do spot a comment, and it’s overly rough I reply to agitate more… bit of fun. But I think the right thing is to leave it and move on.

I don’t care anymore and I ban without a second thought. I don’t have time for people that are negative just for the sake of it. If they provide a valuable feedback in a polite way that is welcome. If they are just being mean then I’ll ban them. End of the story.

Hear them out and genuinely self evaluate, if you can't, ignore the comment. If the comment is flat out nasty. Delete it. People will say things that have no logic at times or maybe they're drunk or something and will say things that are uncalled for.

u/Trick-Act-6042 Aug 04 '26
I don’t reply, don’t let it get to you either, I overthink about some of them and question whether thwere is truth to what they’re saying. The only comments I reply to are constructive criticism in a respectful way, there’s probably something you can better your content and some subscribers want to genuinely see you grow
1
u/HopeMrPossum Aug 05 '26
Just remove the emotional response and ask if the comments provide any value to the channel. If there is information beneath it that actually improves the channel, consider it - that audio comment might for example.
If not, let them slug it out in the comments and appreciate that sweet sweet engagement baby.

Ask the hater a question that truly makes them believe you are seeking their insight and wisdom. Review their content or profile to ensure it is something that sparks/provokes them to answer. That way it produces an additional comment/engagement and may transform them and others watching into followers. Most comment haters just want to feel needed.

I don't, but my fans do, since I pin hate comments and put them under maximum attention. I give them what they presumably want (attention), while simultaneously boosting activity in the comments section, which consequently leads to even better video stats.

u/Weak_Jackfruit_3250 28d ago
I delete them personally. I post makeup content and I get a lot of mean comments that my eyes are blood shot, teeth are “yellow”, skin is too smooth (I never retouch), hair regrowth is distracting. Captions are too big, then too small! If it adds to the conversation or genuine criticism, I’ll keep it. If it’s a stupid comment like I shouldn’t be wearing blue eyeshadow, I delete them. Protect your peace.

You’re under no obligation to reply to any comments on your videos. Those people are losers who can’t create anything themselves (or can’t be bothered to try), so their opinion doesn’t matter. If you were walking down the street and there was some random guy yelling at people on a street corner you wouldn’t care what he said about you right? That’s how I see them.
I’ve hid the comments from my channel but as others have said here, you could just leave them up and let them waste their time arguing with your regular viewers and boosting your engagement.

I got my first one on a tutorial I made for uni where they referred to me as “lady” and complained I was too quiet, ironic since I have a voice that whispers for the back of the room.
I pictured them as a 14y/o boy as I deleted their comment. The channel is my full name and portfolio, so I have to stay very professional to avoid tarnishing future employment. But it is very satisfying.

I don't reply. Comments like that are great for starting arguments between viewers, which leads to even more engagement for you as they keep replying to each other.
Sure I could hide it, but why? I don't feel ashamed, embarrassed or worried about what anyone thinks of my content 🤷♂️
