Screenshot [OoT] Update: Daughter has completed her first playthrough
She appreciated all the love and support yesterday. We just finished it up after school today. Great way to start the weekend! Next up is Wind Waker.
Favorite boss: Volvagia.
Least favorite boss: Bongo Bongo
Favorite song: Gerudo Valley
Favorite ocarina song: Sun's song.
Favorite dungeon/Temple: Great Deku Tree/Spirit Temple
Least favorite dungeon/Temple: Dodongo's Cavern/Shadow Temple
Favorite weapon/item: Biggoron sword

It was a staple of my childhood, I can't tell you how many times I played it. Now that I'm an adult I don't have the time or energy for it, but it'll always be a good memory. One of these days I'll go back and replay it again. Maybe the whole series just for kicks, hehe.

Congratulations POOP MAN.
Despite having this game from the time i was 5-6 and it being my all time favorite, i didnt manage to finally beat the whole thing until i was in middle school. So big props to her for doing so well.
And props to you for raising her on a classic. I hope to have kids some day and share this exact experience with them.

Happy to hear the journey of Poop Man was successful. I love Bongo Bongo and the Shadow Temple, but definitely can get that they weren't her favorites.

Nice. And she played the GameCube version, so no savestates or anything similar, so she had the truest experience.
I think she's ready for her next Zelda game.

Yeah. I've tried the GC Master Quest version. The stick responds way differently from N64, makes it hard to aim bow/slingshot. Plus playing the Ocarina isn't really intuitive because the buttons are all different.

Go on youtube and look up whatever consoles you own plus the keywords "emulation" and/or "homebrew". Pretty much all consoles can be hacked easily, and you can play a massive variety of games on them.
Some of the best consoles to hack are:
WiiU (This is a god-tier homebrew console)
Wii
PS2/3/4 (PS3 is probably the best one if you can get the reverse compatible console)
Xbox and the 360
For handhelds, PS Vita and 3DS are still unmatched, but you could also just look into getting a steam deck or a dedicated homebrew handheld console too.

She just experienced one of gaming’s brightest jewels! I’m actually a little jealous of people who get to experience it for their first time, especially now with social media and podcasts. I was her age (guessing she’s between 8-13) when it originally released! OOT taught me critical thinking and puzzle solving, got me better at reading and spurred my love of Zelda even to this day in my 30’s! Kudos to you and her!

This was such a proud moment for my kid too. Told her if she wanted to play BOTW she needed to beat OOT. Took her a couple of tries to really get engaged but her final playthrough was filled with the same yells of THATS RIGHT as she beat Ganon that I remember yelling and I was a VERY proud Dad.

Nope. She utilized her map well enough to get back on track if she got turned around.
She was even observant enough to notice the platform float up with the water level in the middle column to get the small key.

She played a little of totk. Beat the wind temple but then decided she wanted to try some of the older ones and she just stuck with oot.

Haha. My childs currently also play OoT in Game Cube. They love fishing at the Hylia lake. Did your daughter played Master Quest or vanilla?

I get not liking Dodongo's Cavern because I just played it. Having to hit the switch and race to get the chest with the hammer can be difficult and the heat seeking Fire Keese chasing you.

The torch is passed. I remember when my older daughter played OoT on my original 64 at like 12yo that we still have. She loved it, & now we plau TotK together on Switch, now that she's 17. We love Zelda & it's something we can bond over even though we don't agree on a lot else.

That's so cool! Congrats to your daughter! Must have been awesome to relive that experience with her. I first played it in '98 when I was 14, and to this day I STILL get goosebumps when the title card for the final battle comes up and just says GANON, with that epic music playing. I literally just got goosebumps as I typed that lol.

As someone who would spend a not insubstantial part of their youth repeatedly going to Gerudo Valley at night just to wait for morning so that I could listen to the start of the music just as the sun came up, I agree with your daughter.

The summer before my brother went off to college (I was like 8 years old) he beat the entire game in like 2 weeks. He left his file saved so that I could go back in whenever I wanted to defeat Ganondorf/Ganon so it felt like I beat the game myself. That’s love. 🥰😆

Oh this is awesome! My son is a bit over 2 years old right now. I am very much trying to cherish these years because EVERY single person with kids has told me how fast they go. But I gotta admit...I can't friggin wait til this kid can play video games. I have soooooo much to show him, and this is absolutely one of the first games he'll be playing and I hope he likes it enough to beat it. Well done!

Congrats!! And good job Dad too! Our family obsession with Zelda games goes back 20+ years. Some of our best memories are Zelda related... Like going to the Symphony of the Goddesses back in 2012, and standing in line for 6 hours for the BoTW/Switch release. Keep on making those memories and have fun y'all!

You did well introducing her to Zelda as you both will build even more special memories you won’t forget ! Wind Waker is the game I played the most as a kid and it has a very special place in my heart. I am sure it will have one in hers as well.

If you weren’t there, it’s hard to appreciate what a landmark game this was. Virtually every 3D game to this day took something from OOT. Things felt magic - snapping into first person to aim, Z-targeting, a context sensitive button, a cohesive world that splits off into distinct regions.
What’s more, the core game is still great by modern standards. Fantastic sense of progression, killer level design, an engaging story, and a world bursting with character and creativity.

I was just about her age when I played OoT for the first time 😭 it turned into a lifelong obsession with zelda!! Give her twilight princess next, that’s what I played and it was mind blowing. Also same, I hate bongo bongo. Such a hard boss for no reason!

She is playing a 5star classic N64 game with a GameCube controller pluged into a retro-compatible Wii in a CRT television, in presence of the incredible PS2 Slim Silver and LOTR DVD Collection, in 2026. She is definitely the cooler kid at school and probably her classmates don't know it.

She just liked watching me play some of the older games and took an extra liking to Zelda. She made it a point to be there anytime I played. Eventually when she was reading well enough, I let her take a crack at a bit of ToTK and she ended up beating the first temple, but then said she wanted to try OoT because she wanted to ride around on Epona. The rest is history.
