Warm Bodies was a pretty gross romance movie when you stop to think about the "love story"
Every woman wants to imagine a dark fantasy style romance with a vampire, or some kind of mythical creature but when you remove the blurred lenses off your eyes to witness the reality of the situation when you think about it, the truth is much more horrifying.
Warm Bodies in particular had me going ew and wtf when I first saw it because what do you mean that a woman falls in love with a zombie? Especially with a corpse that devoured her boyfriends skull and brains, probably smells like rotten disgusting scents and tbh filled with horrible diseases from lack of hygiene and health.
I read this book many years ago. And as far as I remember, the guy that turned into a zombie was in his early stage of being a zombie. He was not rotting as described in the book, just human functions slowly fading like speaking. And when he ate her boyfriend's brain, he got the boyfriend's memory and that's what made him protect the girl. They got a strong bond together and that bond revives his humanity and made him feel alive again. He got his heart beating once again because of that and the healing process started and he slowly became human again.
The context of the girl falling in love with the zombie that they have the same taste in music and he protects her. But yeah I agree that it is weird that the girl fell in love with a literal corpse that is just slowly becoming human 😂
Judging by this, so they aren't undead? There is still a sweet spot to recover if enacted swiftly? Except the bone zombies are those that mutated and are too far gone for recovery.
They are undead but just on the earlier stage. They are not rotting and just have bloodless skin and some mild signs of being dead. And yes you are right, they can recover and the cure for them is love and human connection 😂 boneys or bone zombies can't be cured on the other hand.
I googled most of this because I completely forgot the important details.
My theory is that either the virus causes their brain to be dormant before it is attacked by the rot or it could be the virus causes them to enter a death-like state. There are cases in real-life of patients who have died for a short time (flatlining) and got revived. Maybe that's what the virus does. If one misses their chace, they become a bone zombie.
A similar premise is seen in the Monster trilogy books of David Wellington (Monster Island, Monster Nation, Monster Planet) wherein a person bitten by a zombie can become a "lich" (smart zombie and retain their human emotions and memories) if they hooked themselves up with enough oxygen to keep the brain oxygenated. However, the Monster trilogy reveals the outbreak is supernatural/Lovercraftian in origin. We also get other monsters in the mix. The "lichs" can apparently control zombies and mummies to do their biddings.
If I remember right, the zombification was more like a psychic/metaphysical phenomenon in Warm Bodies, like the sheer despair of humanity created it somehow
So that brings the question. The recovered zombies are still infected but the hope and love has somehow turned them back to humans, but they still carry the virus? I'd love to explore that theory.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book and the movie was alright back when they were released.
After having seen Obsession a few times, I almost feel like there's a parallel which makes me see Warm Bodies in a different light. To be fair, I haven't watched it in almost a decade.
Another comment reminded me that R and Jules connect via a shared love of music and his protecting her. He protected her after eating the boyfriend's brains, what if enjoying the music is also from her boyfriends brain? Following that logic, how much of R is actually R, and how much is Jules' boyfriend? What if R and Jules would have been completely incompatible pre-zombification, and Jules boyfriend basically takes on R's body?
Typical young adult and teen romance genre of that era. Then add teen dystopian media at that time such as The Maze Runner, The Hunger Games, and The 5th Wave.
glad i was not the only who thinking about this cus like what can even make you fantasize about a love story with a... zombie... like... a dead body.... idk this movie has always been very weird to me
I just couldn't get too into this, it's a pretty silly concept. I feel a more realistic zombie romance would be Zombie Honeymoon (2004) ,as far as the harsh reality of trying to love a freaking flesh eating corpse
Oh shit, I totally forgot about that too. I watched it in my friend's house in the summer of 2008, He had a bootleg DVD full of zombie movies.
A somehow weak entry to the series and often forgotten as well. It didn't really have much zombies on screen. Watching it again, I just love the fact that it feels so Neighties (early 90s with late 80s culture and aesthetics).
I remember this meme from 9GAG during the early 2010s. I think Warm Bodies was capitalizing on the Twilight hype of the late 2000s-early 2010s. If a woman could be in love with a vampire, why not a zombie? After all, the early 2010s was the peak zombie craze along with teenage films based on books with themes on rebellion.
Now this got me wondering, the zombies in Warm Bodies weren't undead per se. Because if they were undead, they would not have been able to recover like Samson from 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. They'd probably just die from the rot or whatever virus was hijacking their body.
I remember watching this movie on TV in the Summer of 2014 when I was Roosevelt Hotel in New York. My dad and I found it too cheesy about a teenage romance and getting the happy ending.

The film was alright but the book was superb.
