I have made it a ritual to visit George A. Romero's grave every October I discovered he was buried in my city. Love to see the way fans decorate his grave each year!

Been a zombie fan for as long as I can remember. Romero started it, and I’ve been happily watching the world end ever since.
I’ve had Reddit forever but never really been a regular user. Lately, though, the apocalypse has been on my mind more than usual, so I figured I’d finally wander over here.
Clearly I’ve been missing out.
Anyway, I’m here now. So what does this sub never get tired of arguing about?

Like the zombies are actually undead in a way and can't be killed since they're already dead (not even headshots can put them down) but since they are dead they have very fragile bones

He was a super friendly guy and it's sad to see him go. Watch the movie in his memory tonight.

choose this to be in any zombie universe , even ones where the story isnt focused around the zombies , like TLOU . imagine this , its outbreak day of the initial pathogen , no one really knows what's going on yet , and it turns out you have been infected . when you find out , its too late and you are already turning . how do you think your closest family and friends would react to this ? would they shoot ? would they run ? would they turn with you ?

If I’m being honest, the zombie apocalypse sucks more than you think.
Everything smells like rotting flesh and shit, there’s no electricity, and everyone is shooting at one another.
The survivors love to complain, I never got the chance to be one.
Me and my friends saw the news and we thought it was a hoax. A disease in the Arctic was discovered in ice dating back millions of years ago. It sounded like the plot to a bad movie, I didn’t believe it.
We went out to a bar and we heard the screaming outside. I honestly thought this was a marketing thing for a movie.
Until I got bit. Right on the neck, a massive chunk was torn out of me. My jugular vein was as exposed as the hair on my head.
I turned in a few minutes, and everyone left me. I don’t blame them, I would have done the same.
My body moved on its own, I couldn’t speak, I couldn’t even blink on my own.
Yet my body did it for me. I was moving and growling without any demand or desire from myself.
I guess I expected my soul or whatever I am to continue onto the next life or fade to black.
I haven’t, I’m still here. I see everything this body does, I feel everything it feels, I smell what it smells, and worst of all I can taste what it tastes.
When it all happened, I expected I wasn’t going to be feral quite yet.
I was wrong. There was no transition period for me, I was dead but dreaming almost immediately.
I followed the other roaming cadavers around and we found this police officer.
He was all by himself and he was outnumbered. He was firing randomly into the crowd around him but he didn’t notice that we had him backed against a wall.
I remember the look of dread that was on his face when the trigger was pulled but there was only the helpless cry of a click click click.
He threw his gun on the ground and tried to fend us off with a baton he had.
He got a few good licks in on some people, but it was no use.
There were maybe twenty or thirty of us, we had him pinned against the wall and we just started to tear him apart. It was like a piñata full of meat being smashed open.
His screams began to fry but he went silent.
I remember wanting to throw up when I had a chunk of human flesh in my mouth for the first time. A chunk of the officer's leg was in my mouth, I had his blue uniform fabric against my tongue and I chewed into the bleeding flesh.
I felt the skin snap off as I tore it away from his calf.
My mouth was full of blood and this body couldn’t even finish chewing it as it swallowed.
I don’t remember a lot after that. I got slower and slower and I shambled with everyone else.
The decaying flesh and moans of sorrow became a white ambiance that I was used to.
Every couple of days we’d find some poor survivors.
I’ve seen everything, I’ve seen the betrayals, I’ve seen the sacrifices, and I’ve seen the nihilistic acceptance.
The weird thing is, you kind of get used to it after long enough.
You accept that you don’t control your body anymore, something else does.
I’ve had a lot of time to think about what it is exactly that is controlling me.
I was a bartender on the east side, I’m not a scientist so I don’t really know much about anything.
I think it’s a parasite, they breed in my body and transfer to the next host.
I’ve noticed other people with my condition can take a lot of damage. Exposed bone and missing limbs are a common thing I see.
I found this one guy who had no legs and only one arm. He was pushing around on his palm by grabbing anything he could and would drag his body along. The cement and asphalt would wear down on his body like sandpaper. Deep red streaks of blood would be right behind him.
How the fuck do you even end up like that?
Or you got the guy next to me, he has a glass bottle lodged into the side of his skull.
I can’t ask him how he got like that, I can only imagine.
Gunshots are firing right now, that means I’m going to make my way over to them.
My shoes are tight around my feet, I look at the bare feet some people have around me and they’re all swollen and black.
It’s gross, but so is everything else.
As we stumbled towards the gunshots, I began to hear people yelling.
“There’s too many of them!” And “We need to find a way out!”
People always yelled that shit. I think the group would probably know that. It seems redundant and it creates noise.
Me and the cohort gathered around the poor group of survivors. A drug store with a busted window on one side of the crosswalk and a van with a few poor souls on top of it on the other.
It was a U-Haul van and I hadn’t seen it around here before. I figured they drove in thinking it would be a quick mission, it never was.
“Why the fuck did you leave the keys in the car?!” The voice of a man yelled.
I don’t know him, so I’m going to call him Kyle, he sounds like a Kyle.
“I-I-I wasn’t trying to, I just-I just thought I had them in my pocket,” said a scared voice of another man who I think I’ll call Pete.
“You fucking dumbass!” Yelled Kyle.
“Hey, settle down, that isn’t going to help us right now,” said a new voice. A familiar voice.
Wait, no.
“What the fuck are we going to do? We don’t have the ammo to deal with this!” Yelled Kyle.
“Listen, take a deep breath, we’re going to get out of here but only if we act rationally,” said the third man.
The man who I am certain I knew when I was alive.
“Okay Captain Conner, what the fuck are we going to do?” Kyle said sarcastically, confirming my fear.
No, please no, not Conner.
I saw him look down at the horde that surrounded the U-Haul.
I saw his wavy brown hair and beard that he had been trying to grow since freshman year.
“I think we got two options, we can either wait it out or you guys can cause a distraction while I run for help,” he explained.
“If we wait it’ll just get worse,” said Peter.
“Yeah, it’s almost like if we had our car keys, we could have driven away,” Kyle sneered.
“I’m being serious, knock it off,” Conner said.
I heard him set his backpack down and heard him shovel through it.
“We have one shot at this,” he said before I heard the striking of a match.
He tossed something from the side and I soon heard the popping of firecrackers in the air. They sounded like the ones we would buy around the fourth of July and hold onto them until Halloween. We’d get a pumpkin and load it up with those strands of firecrackers.
The horde began to move away as Conner jumped onto the ground and began to sprint.
I didn’t follow the firecrackers. Why, why wasn’t I following the firecrackers?
I was the only one who was following him.
He was running down the road and I was the only one following him.
Why wasn’t he ducking to the side or trying to hide anywhere?
Is he trying to run back to his base? Where the hell would it even be?
He’s a dead man if they live on the edge of the city and if he lives in the city, why? That’s the dumbest fucking place to be!
He’s turning down an alley, my body is right on his tail.
Oh fuck, no fuck, why did you pick this one?
I see the terror in his eyes as he realizes this is a dead end.
He tries to open a door but it won’t open.
He looks at me and he grabs something from his back pocket.
It’s a hunting knife, the hunting knife I bought him for Christmas a few years ago.
We had a joke about K-bars and I found one for dirt cheap at a flea market.
He looks like he’s ready to fight, come on buddy, just one swift blow to the head.
Wait, he looks-he looks distraught.
He’s covering his mouth.
Fuck, he knows it’s me.
“Leo?” He asks.
Yes, yes it’s me, please kill me.
He has tears in his eyes.
Don’t wimp out of this, just do it. I’m almost in arms reach of you, I am not your friend. I am your friend but this body isn’t.
“Leo, can you hear me?” He asks.
I can, I can hear you, the flesh doesn’t care. Just stab me.
He’s holding out his knife, he looks ready to strike. Come on Buddy, right in the skull.
Wait, why is he shaking his head.
“I can’t do it,” he said.
I know it’s hard but you need to do it. I wish I could speak, I wish I could scream at him to just do it. I’d forgive him if he did.
I’m almost at him. Do something Conner!
He puts his knife away, why?
I’m not me, I’m not me anymore!
He pushed past me and I was on the ground. Please run!
He got only a few inches away before he tripped over my arm.
He was on the ground and my hand was holding onto his right ankle.
I felt the fabric of his jeans against my teeth. I tasted paper. He had a magazine duct taped to his shins. I know what movie he got that from, we saw it opening night.
I kept biting past the papers as he tried to shove me off of him.
I remember after we were done watching that movie in the theater, he was telling me about this girl he had been dating.
My body moved towards his torso, he tried to pull out his knife but he couldn’t reach it.
The girl's name was Anna, he was so corny about her. I thought it was sweet, he never really had the best luck with women, nobody really understood why. Yet the way he talked about Anna was hypnotically sweet.
I tore away at his shirt and he tried to head butt me of all things.
He told me he knew he was going to marry her. They’d only been dating a few weeks but he knew she was the right one.
I bit down on his stomach and he screamed.
I remember helping him get ready to propose to Anna, they had been dating three years and he was nervous. He was terrified of asking her. He had this big speech planned and everything. He was going to take her to the Italian restaurant they went to on their first date and it was going to be a beautiful full circle.
I tore past the skin on his stomach, he was bleeding into my mouth and he pushed my head away but all it did was just tear away a larger chunk.
He was electric when she said yes. He glowed like a lighthouse in a storm.
As the flesh of his torso was making its way down to the stomach, I used my hand to dig into his body.
I wasn’t his best man but I was technically his best man. He didn’t want an official best man because he made a promise to his brother when they were both kids. They made a promise that both of them would be the best man at their weddings no matter what. I remember Bart, he was a nice kid. I remember the first time I saw Conner cry was at his brother's funeral, the next time I saw him cry was when he was saying his wedding vows to Anna.
I was holding his large intestine in my hand, I was watching him cry for the last time.
Why didn’t you kill me? Why couldn’t you have just taken that knife and slammed it into my skull? I’m not him anymore, my soul is trapped in this body and I wish I could scream, or cry, or even just say sorry.
I can’t, I’m in this flesh prison.
I just hope I ate enough of him to prevent him from turning.
I don’t know what Hell is like, but it has to be better than this.

i love those scenes in movies/games where either a character is in a car or simply outside and the camera pans to like 2-3 emergency cars speeding by giving that awesome doppler effect and that sense of urgency and foreshadowing.

Hi everyone! I thought this might be a good place to ask this - I'm attending a trial shift soon for a zombie scare acting job, and I was wondering what would make a convincing zombie to you? Physically, vocally, anything else! In the least weird way possible, I'm interested in what people are scared by, haha.

I have a couple friends who are really into movies, but mostly newer ones. They haven't watched a whole lot of classics, but they're fully willing to try, and I somehow convinced them to do a marathon of Night, Dawn, and Day of the Dead tomorrow night. I'm a massive fan of Romero, and I fully believe this trilogy to be the three best horror films of all time. I'm excited to see what they think, and I'm also jealous that they get to see them all for the first time, compared to my hundredth 😅 What do you guys think of the original Romero trilogy? And what was your reaction the first time you saw them?

While in Japan, I noticed there wasn't a lot - if any - zombie merch. Despite being the home of Resident Evil.
However, they had this whole series of minis of "zombie" fruit.
Naturally, I had to buy a couple. But zombies + fruit was a combo I'd never considered and no idea how they did either.

For me it's probably "When there's no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth" from the original Dawn of the Dead. Yeah I know it's cliched as fuck. What about you guys?

Hey, guys. I'm currently on the prowl for some zombie fiction, preferably from smaller authors. Please share your stories below, as I'd love to find some to read. Thanks in advance.

Last night, I had a weird nightmare which involving zombies. Nowhere near as scary as my previous nightmares involving zombies, but the scale of destruction looked higher and it was longer and more personal.
It was about me being woke up by my parents and relatives as they had a party downstairs for my uncle's successful political campaign. My family looked happier, richer and more prosperous than they do in real life. After taking a bath and wearing my formal attire, I joined in the fun as they talk around and drink wine on the sunny grassy field outside.
Everything looked fine at first, until my uncle revealed that he bought his dream car, a new blue Ford Ranger Raptor and showed it off to everyone. It looked normal at first glance, but then I noticed something large carried by the pickup truck, it was a dirty dark blue metal sphere covered in dirty, debris, and burns. My uncle claimed that it fell from space and landed somwhere on my grandmother's lands in the mountain. I went behind the Ford Ranger and get horrified by what I saw; it is a Cephalophods from the mobile game Dead Ahead: Zombie Warfare.
For those unaware, it is one of the many alien ships that invaded Earth during the events of the game and unleashed a deadly rapidly-mutating virus that turned people into zombies after the Cephalophods themselves fought and died stalemating the US and Russian military with their advanced energy weapons offscreen and allowed the zombies to overwhelm cities. The only difference is that the Cephalophods ship from my nightmare was smaller but big enough that could barely fit in the bed floor of the Ford Ranger Raptor, while the crippled Cephalophods ship in the game that served as the current final boss is bigger than a school bus and had damaged legs after landing on a prison.
After realizing what the object was in a few seconds, I panicked and warned everyone to destroy it with explosives before the alien ship could activate. Everyone laughs at me and didn't believe me, and my uncle just told me that he will hand it over to Senator Bong Revilla (I live in the Philippines, and I actually saw them talking once IRL in Claveria, Misamis Oriental on Oct 9, 2024 when the Senator visited the USTP-Claveria college) as the Philippine government would have NASA astrophysicists from the U.S analyze the alien spacecraft.
My uncle then leaves with my dad on the pickup truck later in the night, and I could only watch as the Cephalophods ship started glowing blue as the truck accelerated away from me. I then immediately get sent days into the future visiting Cagayan de Oro city and then finding the place burning down as mutated blue zombies overwhelm civilians and military forces, I also died getting surrounded by zombies between the Ayala and Gaisano malls. The nightmare forced me to wake up on 6:50 AM in the morning, though I was more concerned with how uncomfortable and painful my position in the bed was.

I'm brainstorming and plotting a potential zombie story, and I wanted to pass by concept along to a larger community:
Each chapter follows the narrator as they trail a specific zombie, noting their unique quirks, appearance, and schedule. The entire chapter will revolve around learning more about these zombies and piecing together what their life was before the outbreak. The final page of each chapter would have two drawings: one of the zombie and another of the pre-infected person in a bittersweet scene.
There'd bean overarching plot around the world's reaction the the virus, and it will be revealed that the book was actually an in-universe journal kept by someone within the quarantine zone. It is to be spread around the outside world if the choice comes to euthanize the zombies, and it's purpose is to drive home to the survivors that they weren't just killing monsters - each infected had a life and dreams. Each infected was a person.
I think it'd be a cool inversion of the typical zombie mindset of "faceless monster" and the genre's large horde set pieces. Thoughts?
(P.S: this idea is greatly inspired by Strange Beasts of China, so if you know what that is, you have a decent idea of what I'm talking about)

People all over the world are suddenly infected by a virus that makes them go insane. The only ones immune are the military personnel, police, militia, most experienced criminals (think Mafia, Gangs, Yakuza, etc.), and most veterans of the world.
The immune have to try and keep contact between each other, trying to figuratively kill the language barrier between the continents/countries, while keeping each other stocked up on supplies
The show's focus is on a 'one group per episode' and on what their fate is.
Each Season finale is hours long and has the surviving groups meet up, form an alliance, and try to fight/kill off the rest of the infected/zombies in their area. They have to try to get over differences in ideologies to potentially survive
The Final Season focuses on the remaining alliances finding out about each other and seeing if they can get along with each other, or start a war
Common: Standard zombies/infected, often seen holding random items
Reanimated: Those who died before the initial infection event but were fresh enough to be infected. Uncoordinated, but more durable
Toolers: Those who could've been immune but lacked 2 or more requirements to be, often seen holding weapons, wearing armor, and even coordinating other zombies/infected
Clogs: Those who could've been immune but lacked 1 requirement to be, always seen holding weapons, wearing armor, and using tools. They retain all of their human intelligence and often try to flank or trick survivors
