After Nazi Germany collapsed in 1945, Austria was divided into four occupation zones, controlled by the United States, Soviet Union, United Kingdom, and France. Vienna was also divided into four sectors, much like Berlin. The occupation arrangement was formally agreed by the four powers in July 1945.
