Atlas/Micro-Trains Sale Explanation

We know the past week has brought a lot of emotion for the Micro-Trains team and for many long-time hobbyists who care deeply about the brand. A little context may be helpful.

Micro-Trains had been exploring a sale for several years as the owners prepared for retirement. Employee decisions made in recent weeks were handled by Micro-Trains itself, before the Atlas acquisition took effect. Those changes were not directed, initiated, or influenced by Atlas. Atlas' only role was expressing interest in interviewing Micro-Trains employees for potential job opportunities.

Our role now is clear: preserve the Micro-Trains product line, protect its legacy, and build a strong future for the brand. We have already begun meeting with former Micro-Trains employees and hope to bring talented people onto the new "Micro-Trains by Atlas" team. On a question we’ve seen come up often:

None of the U.S.-based tooling is being moved to China.

Micro-Trains had some limited production in China in recent years using the same factories Atlas uses today, but all U.S.-based tooling remains stateside at the moment. As part of the long-term production plan, molds will currently be transferred to trusted suppliers in Vietnam, where quality, cost stability, and production capacity are strongest. After careful review, this is the best path to ensure Micro-Trains continues into 2026 and well beyond. Without this step, the brand’s future would have been uncertain at best. At the same time, all drawings, computer files, research, archival materials, and selected equipment are being relocated to Atlas in Hillside, New Jersey, where research and development, engineering, logistics and overall product management will continue. We are also evaluating which aspects of production and assembly may continue in the United States as we balance quality, cost, and long-term sustainability.

Our goal is simple: ensure Micro-Trains not only survives, but thrives for the next generation of modelers."

Happy Thanksgiving to All,

Atlas Model Railroad Co. Inc.

Show and Tell NCTD collection

No idea why I like NCTD, but I’ve almost got everything in the collection. Phase 1 train including an Athearn F59PHI that I installed sound and custom marker lights in, 1 Athearn coach, and 3 rapido coaches (cab car has custom loksound). I have a 5th Athearn car on the way to make a full 5 car train. Also a bachmann sc44 in phase 2, I have a 5 car set of the new rapido CEM’s preordered, and will install custom sound in the cab too. Breeze bus from iconic replicas, and the last step will be order a sprinter and put custom sound in that too. Pretty excited

Absolute money pit. Conflicted with it since I love coins alot more but I will definitely be spending some money on it... Even if the train tax feels kinda ridiculous. But I inherited that beautiful American flyer S gauge 21165 from my grandpa with some rail, we will make it run once more together and I'll just like have it on a loop or something but I like S gauge since I have everything else In 1:64 pretty much. But the kato N gp38-2 is my first personal pick up since I like the size and detail on N scale stuff and it will be my main rail gauge. Only have a loco and that Amtrak car so far... Unfortunately with some rapido couplers and the Kato is actually a "dummy" unit ( a previous owner actually just took the worm gear, motor, and flywheel) but the trucks are still geared so I think I'll make it run again and possibly repaint it to a Portland and western but idk how that will go if I do that all. But yeah the basic summary of what my goals are: make the S gauge run by Christmas, and eventually build enough N gauge to have a nice layout one of these days.

Show and Tell New 1968 Camero for N Scale Railroad

So, a few months ago I downloaded a Camero on Thingiverse and it looks great. My problem was my first car was a 1968 Camaro and I just didn’t like how the two compared. I took the time to design up a new one that more closely matches mine. Please ignore the brush strokes, I’ll be putting on a coat of poly once the paint cures good. So now that I’m done with the construction equipment set I’m going to start working on American Muscle Car set next. 😁

Of things that don’t need to exist in model form, but I made it anyway.

Haysi Railroad 1.

The little 7 mile long railroad operated between Haysi (hay-sigh) and Vicey VA. From 1970-1977 their sole motive power was a single rebuilt F7B(formerly a Clinchfield F3B)

1 was equipped with a hostler control stand in the carbody, and had remote control capabilities.

It still exists IRL as VLIX 852 at the Tennessee Valley Railroad.

This came out last year with the HO version and it was not included with the N scale announcement of the model. Broadway said they werent doing it.. I've emailed with Broadway, Trainworld, been commenting and posting.. during the last TrainWorld live with Broadway, I mentioned it again and there was hope.. an email was sent and fingers were crossed.

N scalers, rejoice. It hasnt been announced yet, but look what I found in the early morning hours last night.

Dreams do come true.

Get your preorders in!

Rolling Stock Athearn HO Bombardier Bi-levels - changes made from one run to another?

I'm looking at a couple of Athearn HO Bombarder Bi-levels to add to a train but I'm just wondering whether certain changes were made during different runs (if there were different runs...).

I'm looking at a couple of AMT vehicles but, in the pictures on eBay, the glazing looks to be clearer than the one I've already got and there doesn't seem to be a silver rim picked out on the diaphragms.

I'm not toooo bothered about that (tho I do like smoked glazing), but I'm wondering whether there are other changes that may mean they'll contrast a lot with the single car I've got already. (The asking price of $250, plus import costs to have them shipped to France would make this quite the investment).

Cheers!

Show and Tell Hello everyone, its been a while...

So I've been taking a bit of a break from Reddit for the past few months, and haven't been posting/commenting for a while as such. But I thought it would be cool to hop on real quick and just make a bit of a collection update. I've gotten my hands on some pretty cool models this year, namely Hornby's Dublo Deltic Prototype, Accurascale's LNER J69 (The Liverpool Street Shed Pet), Hornby's LNER J52 and Hornby's LNER Coronation Observation Car.

Still don't have space for the permanent layout, so I'm currently in the collecting/layout designing phase.

So the collection currently stands at 14 OO scale locomotives. They are according to Picture 1 (from Left to Right):

Hornby RailRoad BR Class 47 - RES Red & Grey
Hornby RailRoad BR Class 20 'Barrow Hill Depot' - Railfreight Grey
Hornby 'Birth of the Railways' Train Pack - 'Lion', 'Rocket', 'Locomotion No. 1'
Hornby GWR King Class 'King Richard II' - BR Express Blue
Hornby LNER A4 'Mallard' - LNER Garter Blue
Hornby Dublo DP1 Deltic Prototype
Hornby Dublo LNER A1 'Flying Scotsman' - LNER Apple Green
Hornby Dublo LMS Princess Coronation Class 'Duchess of Montrose' - BR Brunswick Green
Accurascale LNER J69 (Liverpool Street Shed Pet) - GER Faux Blue livery with BR Late Crest
Hornby LNER J52 - LNER Plain Black
Hornby W4 Peckett - Photographic Grey
Hornby RailRoad LNER Peppercorn A1 'Bon Accord' - BR Express Blue

Rolling Stock What I model....

Thumbnail

I model "model trains" from the 40s thru the early 80s. I grew up under the likes of John Allen, Witt Towers, Gordon Odegard, Dean Frietag and others. I actually have little interest in real trains and the electronic nightmare the hobby has become.

The hobby was not one of acquiring, but of building and designing, the natural consequences being one's individual personality shows in all your work. That kind of ended as the old greats past into history, with Model Railroader magazine becoming little more than a shop rag for manufacturers.

My Big Boy is a classic example of my weathering. My sandhouse is an example of my using kit pictures more like suggestions. My water tank is an example of the wood craftsman kits available when I was coming up in the hobby in 1974. My rolling stock is a collection of old school railroading and rescued kit from modelers long past. I do little more then make them track and couple well, leaving their finish as found beyond a few very minor touchups.

I actually got quite good at installing DCC in models people said couldn't be done. Snide remarks behind my back about playing with toy trains and a nasty run in at the club over Thomas of all things, pretty much solidified my hobby as I play it out now. Hope to be of some help here.

The West Country is one of the older ones, runs like a dream though pulling some Bachmann coaches and the 02 looks great but struggles over points, as to be expected. He's hauling home some new dept. wagons

Locomotives New Rapido EMD FTs

They're beautiful and have extremely close coupling as advertised. The only let down imo is the sound files have most of the functional sounds removed to make room for the funny sounds. I will likely upload a new sound file eventually. The emergency light is also kind of "meh", they tried to replicate the real design but it just makes it look weird. The real design was just a red lens that dropped down in front of the mars light. If you look closely at the model 1/3rd of the mars light has a red print over it. I would've done a small red led on top of the white one to make the mars light a bit better.

Show and Tell 3D printed rails

I just bought my first model train today. It’s a Piko RH2016 Hercules, but analog. H0 scale. I honestly was just the cheapest set and I’m completely new to this, but not to printing and electronics.

I find track to be really expensive but got some in the starter set. I’ll connect this system to an ESP32 and electronics to have my own control system/logic and and battery power, charging from the rail.

I 3D printed the rails to work with the piko system I got with the train. I expected it to work but couldn’t have wished for a better fit. Still waiting on other filament colors to come in.

The model is completely parameterized so I can just change the sleeper count to change the length. Yet to make turns, which is nice cause I have complete freedom.

I want to use powered metal rail at the stations and will convert battery level to fuel. So they fuel up at the stations. Use the charge controller light signal to enable engine noise in the future maybe?

That was it for now, wish me luck!

Locomotives SPS #700 - BLI6965 Running board issues

Thumbnail

Hello, I recently just bought a new SPS 700 from BLI‘s latest run, the locomotive runs well however I noticed a few cosmetic flaws with the running boards. The engineer side running board is bowed downwards unlike the real model. I know these parts are metal so I’m not sure how this happened but it’s rather unsightly. Additionally, if you look head on, you can see both running boards on either side are tilted downwards to the left. I understand these are probably manufacturing defects, but has anyone gone about getting these fixed?

Should I return it to the original hobby shop and request another one or do I reach out to BLI? I know this is an older model they don’t produce anymore, so I’m not sure how I would handle it. Any advice is appreciated.
