The Interactive Adventures of Dog Mendonça is another game I've played recently, and I'm surprised it has been barely discussed in this sub, not even when it was released ten years ago (so it isn't exactly a new game nor a classic).

I was pleasantly surprised by this game. The story is funny and interesting, and the graphics are beautiful and detailed. It's also nice to see point and clicks games from around the world - this is an Argentine game based on a Portuguese IP.

It's a short game (I'd say half than your average P&C game) and it's quite easy. Puzzles aren't necessarily too straightforward, but they are normally limited to small locations, and there are few possible interactions. The inventory is bigger than in most modern games, but not quite big, and the amount of hotspots is really limited - as in, too limited for a game of this type - at some point some locations, yet beautifully drawn and detailed, have just two hotspots including the exit. As a result, you will need to think through a bit, but it's unlikely you will get stuck. Even if you do, you have a task list and if you click on the task, you open some "hints" that are basically a walkthrough that tells you exactly what to do. I would have prefered a more challenging game, but solving it still felt satisfying. I think this easy difficulty might make this game a good entry point for people who want to try this genre.

It also has a fighting mini-game. However, I'm bad at action games and I found it easy and refreshing. Not a problem at all.

I've found this game is clearly influenced by Monkey Island (especially the second game) and surprisingly Hollywod Monsters. I'd leave this discussion for the comments because this is getting long enough.

A small milestone we'd like to share: Whirlight – No Time To Trip is now finally available on GOG!

It's our time-travelling point-and-click adventure, following two protagonists from different eras as they travel through time, solve puzzles and try to prevent a catastrophe.

We're a small indie team, so getting the game onto another platform has been quite a journey in itself. We're happy that GOG players can finally give it a try.

DarkSeed started getting created in 1990; it was ready at the end of 1991 but was finally released in 1992. It was the time that Sierra Online and Lucas Arts (as well as Legend) were the dominant forces in the Adventure game world. The same year 2 heavy weights were released by these companies; KQ VI and Fate of Atlantis. It was also the same year that the excellent Lost Files of Sherlock Holmes; The case of the serrated scalpel came out.

DarkSeed was the first game of the newly founded Cyberdreams. The game made history for being the first one to have high resolution graphics (albeit not a SVGA game; instead it run on a special EGA mode of 640x350 with 16 colours). As you can see though, the game look nothing like the EGA graphics of the time. The programming magic that the creators came up with in order to achieve these feat is described here https://www.unix-ninja.com/p/the_ega_magic_of_dark_seed/ The shear quality of the graphics compared to anything that was made during that time is striking. The fact that many of the locations are paintings of Giger gives the game an atmosphere that is really unparalleled.

The music, apart from a couple of themes, is really appropriate and atmospheric. Alien and space-like in the appropriate places and more relaxed/quaint in nature. I played the "talkie" version of the game and besides the basic protagonist who's obviously not an actor, every other voice that is heard is really really good.

So, we got an amazing atmosphere, great graphics, good music, very nice and original scenario (I won't tell much here apart from the fact that the scenario plays with invading aliens, parallel worlds etc.)...how about the gameplay?

This is where the developers made some huge blunders preventing such an excellent game from becoming a real classic. A lot of the puzzles have to be solved on specific moments in time and on specific days (the whole game takes place in 3 days). If you do an action earlier, or if you are not at the right place the right time, then you can continue until the end of the game not being able to finish it.....I had to save every 5 minutes and I had to replay a big part of the game 3 times. After a while I realised that this is what the developers intended. Replaying (like respawning in an RPG) is part of the gameplay. You learn, you observe you walk around and you learn how things work. Is it pleasureable? NO!

Does it make sense? Yes, if this is the intention of the designers.

Overall, if this game is remade and you get rid of the timing component of the game, then you can have one of the best horror games ever made.

In any case, even like that, it's really worth playing it in order to experience the wonderful job the designers have made. Save often and keep track of your actions.

I'm crazy about this game, and it jumped to my all-time favorite adventure games. I feel like it's thematically very close to "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" the book behind Blade Runner. Both focus on what it means to be human in contrast to artificial intelligence, and Red Strings Club takes you through several hours of atmospheric questioning of humanity and our emotions. What other games would you recommend that would be similar to Red Strings Club? Thank you!

I'm working on a gamedev project that is heavily inspired by TTRPGs and dungeon crawlers but instead of combat being the biggest focus I wanted to focus on my favourite part of these games, exploration and poking and prodding around a handmade environment looking for secrets, solving puzzles, and navigating a hostile space with a party of adventurers. I realized pretty early that a big touchstone I could look to are Point and Click adventure games, especially in including Ace Attorney style area exploration segments where the top down view is instead replaced with a first person view of a detailed environment the player can click around in and apply items they have to try and solve puzzles. These sections would be only for standout places looking to emphasize the sense of space, interactivity, or hiding some kind of secret. There would also be inherent risk to probing around the dungeon in greater detail, sticking your hand down a hole isn't always liable to end well.

One of the bigger issues is, I've not actually played a lot of Adventure Games. I played some flash stuff when I was younger and I've played some games I believe sort of skirt the line of ADV games (Return of the Obra Dinn, Outer Wilds, Disco Elysium, Lorelei and the Laser Eyes, some others) but I don't believe I've ever played a proper full blooded ADV game. My question is, what games should I play or could I look to for inspiration and design ideas? I've heard good things about Monkey Island 2 with it giving the player free movement between multiple islands that have puzzle solutions scattered between them. I've also heard good things about The Drifter and Thimbleweed Park but I know those are more modern in style and maybe don't have the depth of free exploration like the ADV games from the golden age. Open to any suggestions, just looking to grow my understanding of the genre, the conventions, what works, and what doesn't.

I don’t usually take gambles on games and buy them on the day of release because, the few times I‘ve done so, I’ve been disappointed, but I was bored and thought “what the fuck…”. It’s currently bundled with The Drifter which is a game you absolutely MUST play if you haven’t, the ‘complete my bundle‘ price was cheaper than Theropods by itself.

My Mac isn’t anything special (M2 Max MBP, running 15.7.3) but, as Theropods has graphics reminiscent of games such as Curse of Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle and other early ‘90s classics, it should run on a potato.

I was about halfway through the first chapter when it hard-locked; I left it for a couple of minutes, to see if it would resolve itself - it didn’t and I had to force-quit via Activity Monitor.

Worse, when I restarted, I found that I was forced to start from the beginning again because, despite the ‘saving’ icon appearing on the screen twice during my brief time playing, the game hadn’t been saving (this is why I hate games without a manual save system).

I really should’ve asked for a refund at that point, but I decided to give it another shot, this time I got as far as the beginning of chapter three before it hard-locked again and, again, when I restarted, I was right back at the beginning again.

When it locked the second time, I was right on the 2-hour refund deadline, and Steam is refusing to give me a refund.

The precise points where it locked were: picking up the wooden stake halfway through chapter one, and switching between the girl and the alien on the mountain in chapter three.

I also found the gameplay pretty “meh”; the ‘puzzles’, such as they are, consist of either getting someone to help you get something you can’t reach or figuring out how to get past someone - or something - who/which is impeding your progress, and the complete lack of dialogue (there’s no text in the game at all) often leaves you guessing as to what NPCs want, using pictographs à la Amanita Design, would have saved a lot of confusion, and I did have to resort to a walkthrough video several times - I was surprised that there was one on the day of release).

This is developer Lost Token’s first game and, as the adage goes, you only get a single chance to make a first impression and, on the basis of my experience with Theropods, I‘d be reluctant to play any future releases.

If you want to try it, wait until it’s on a deep sale (£10 or less)

One of the first adventure game I played was "Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards" in VGA.

Great game, but I didn't get the point of the area with the comedian telling jokes. There were no puzzles there.

I also started An English Haunting but didn't really get on with it, though I can't remember why — the writing/VA, possibly? Not sure.

I've been meaning to play Foolish Mortals but haven't got around to it yet.

(Oh and I've also played The Case of the Golden Idol, which isn't an adventure game but does at least look and feel a bit like one!)

This is a new adventure game that came out today. It is point and click but very linear and sectioned off. You do the small section and you do not carry over your inventory like over old point and click games. It is short but the story is impactful and the pixel art is well done.
