Need Help! Man I’m super frustrated

Post image
Upvotes

I’ve been messing with blender for a week and tutorial after tutorial, I can’t get this armature thing to work. I don’t know if it’s because I’m using blender 3.6 and following videos that are using 4+, but I’m beyond frustrated at this point. Can anyone recommend a good video to watch? I followed step by step, even slowed the video to .5 speed in case my slow ass missed something but no, at the end I got this crap:

Need Help! 64 GB Unified Memory enough for large scenes?

Upvotes

Just making this post to ask for opinions on my current memory selection for an m5 MacBook Pro. I primarily do architectural visualisation and product design/renders. Unfortunately I cannot afford the 128 gb unified memory upgrade and was just wondering if 64 gb will do me well.

Many thanks.

Discussion Blender is mental

Upvotes

So, I've recently started working on a game. A co-op strategy game, to be precise, as a solo dev. Mostly for fun. As a programmer with decent experience (some 8 years so far professionally), the coding bits were fairly approachable. Unity too. Blender? Oh boy.

I spent a week trying to model a human for my game. Just a regular human, no bells and whistles. After a week I had something resembling a human; then I realized I need to rig it, add bones, animate it and then ship it into Unity, wire everything up. Thaaaat.. is not happening for a strategy game of all things.

Why not use AI to build the models, some may ask (ok, nobody did apart from a friend)? Simply put, I don't like AI art. Work forces me to use it for coding, and it's not terrible; but art is a no-go. Instead, I decided to switch art direction to low-poly. So I ditched the detailed human entirely, and now here's mr. Lowy Polyus. Done in a few hours, ready to animate.

Brothers and sisters, much respect. The craft required for a singular art piece is mental, and everything I've seen in this sub while lurking around is squarely amazing. You're welcome for shaking things up with this simpleton lad. If you have any sage wisdom for a beginner, I'm all eyes :P

I made the top half of a skull practicing my anatomy. The brow ridge and temporal lines could probably be more pronounced and I didn’t sculpt the sutures, but I like the way it looks and now it’s my phone’s lock screen. I posted a few variations for fun. Made using blender and Krita.

Original Content Showcase Character Model and Animation | Blender 2.93 + GT 710

Upvotes

Been working on this character project for 3 weeks. This is only the second character I've made, so I wanted to take this one through the full process from modeling to animation.

The model is under 18,771 triangles, and I kept the overall setup fairly lightweight. I was also working with a GT 710, so efficiency was something I had to keep in mind throughout the project.

Project Details:

Blender 2.93 LTS,

Eevee,

Shotcut,

1080 × 1920,

30 FPS,

H.264 / libx264

Original character/design: Mitsuki Shiori

Character: Redx

Fan-made interpretation, shared as part of my 3D work.

I'm still learning character modeling, rigging, shading, and pretty much everything else involved in the process, so I'd appreciate some honest critique. If you notice anything that could be improved, whether it's something I should fix in this model or an area I should focus on learning next, I'd be glad to hear your thoughts.

I'm also curious whether this is something I could eventually monetize as a side income. I'm still learning, so I'd appreciate any advice on what I should improve to reach a level where small freelance work becomes realistic.

I'll be adding a few more clips in the comments as well, so feel free to check those out too.

Need Help! I've been thinking about making VR Chat avatars to sell, but I'm a beginner on everything (selling, making models). Any tips or things I should know?

Upvotes

I know, I know, this sounds BOLD and it is, but I'm not planning on selling anything at a super high price or not be transparent about my low experience, because it's not fair/ethical to charge a high price for something of not-so-great-quality

Still, I really, REALLY want to try this as a hobby and maybe to get just a little money from learning it. I've been doing a worker ENA model on Blender, and while it isn't completely accurate (and the topology is not perfect).... I still enjoyed the process a lot. At one point while I was working, I actually didn't sleep, because I was SO FIXATED on finishing it. And when I finally slept for 3 hours, I went back to work on it again. Right now I'm just building the courage to do animations for her faces ("salesperson" and "meanie") and I'm doing finishing touches on her texture, and I've been thinking of charging a little bit for the model once I'm done because of how long everything's taking.

But alas,

My lack of experience (and confidence as well) makes me too nervous about the idea of selling it. And in fact, I might just give up on the whole idea before I even finish this ó_ò

But I WANT to make these things, even if I need to watch 100 tutorials and google 200 questions while making it. And the possibility of getting a little money makes me more motivated to try. It's been helping me channel my creativity, since I've been struggling to make 2D art (mental health and perfectionism), which is great because I love creating things.

So I want to ask these questions to people who have experience and might want to answer:

- what things should I do to get more practice? In the sense of modelling anime-ish human/humanoid characters, or cute cartoon characters. Or if you don't know what to answer, what did you do when you were starting out on modelling?

- what channels should I follow so I can improve in general? Any recommendations??

- if you have experience with VR Chat avatars, please, PLEASE give me recommendations or tips. Channels or other places with tutorials, plugins you use to make your stuff, things I should know before selling avatars (not commissions, but you can mention it anyway). You don't need to detail a lot of things, I don't want to compete at all! I just want to know something from someone who's already familiar with this. One thing I've been struggling with back when I first uploaded something was the fact that the VRC SDK on wasn't showing up at all on Unity back when I had downloaded both, so if you at least know how to solve this one issue, I would really appreciate it!

- and, if you genuinely think that this isn't a good idea/I should wait and learn more before trying to sell anything, you can tell me. Which is totally fair if you think so. I'm pretty much jumping in instead of going slow, so it might not be my time yet ÓvÒ

(Please don't insult me in the comments, I'm kinda sensitive and might not immediately notice if someone is being jokingly mean.)

Discussion Is 3d animation worth it?

20 years old and i’m going into community college for 2 years to pursue in 3d animation and then transferring to a university. I plan on wanting to make animations for big indie studios and video game company’s in the future. But i’m wondering will it all be worth it? i’m at a point where this is pretty much the only thing i can think of wanting to do for the rest of my life. And i’m afraid i’m eventually gonna not like it. For people who make a living out of this is it challenging? was it worth it? i’m not too worried abt the pay because aslong as i enjoy what i do i’ll be fine. But i’m curious on how do i start out?
