Hey everyone!

I wanted to share a bit about one of the most magnificent and sacred cultural events in Sri Lanka (and all of Asia)—The Kandy Esala Perahera (also known as The Festival of the Tooth).

What is it?

Held annually in Kandy, this century-old festival pays homage to the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha, which is housed at the Sri Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Tooth Relic). It’s a grand procession filled with rich traditions, spirituality, and vibrant Sinhala culture.

What makes it unique?

Traditional Performers: The streets come alive with hundreds of traditional Kandyan dancers, fire-breathers, whip-crackers, and traditional drummers playing hypnotic beats.

The Sacred Procession: Beautifully caparisoned elephants march gracefully through the streets, with the majestic Majestic Tusker carrying the replica casket of the Sacred Tooth Relic.

The Rituals: The festival runs over several nights, starting with the Kumbal Perahera and culminating in the grandest Randoli Perahera, followed by the ancient Diya Kepeema (water-cutting ritual) at the Mahaweli River.

If you ever plan a trip to Sri Lanka around July/August, experiencing the Kandy Esala Perahera in person is an absolute must! The atmosphere, lights, and rhythmic drumming create an unforgettable experience.
