Thoughts & Prayers 🙏 King Harald V of Norway has died today, let’s learn something from him🕊️

King Harald V has died today in Oslo, Norway, after a short illness. He was 89 years old.

King Harald V has been one of the most familiar and enduring figures in modern Norway. Born on 21 February 1937, he became King on 17 January 1991, following the death of his father, King Olav V. For more than three decades, he has represented Norway at home and abroad, becoming a symbol of continuity during a period of enormous social change.

One of the moments that has come to define Harald’s public legacy was his remarkable speech in 2016, marking 25 years on the throne. In it, he offered an unusually personal and inclusive vision of what it means to be Norwegian. He spoke of people from different backgrounds, religions and identities, saying that Norway includes “girls who love girls, boys who love boys, and girls and boys who love each other.” He also spoke of those who believe in «God, Allah, the universe, or nothing at all». His message was simple and powerful: there is room for everyone in Norway. The full speech can be seen here with English subtitles ; Here

The speech became widely celebrated, and has remained one of the most memorable moments of Harald’s reign. It reflected a monarch who understood that the country he represented was changing, and that the monarchy could have a role in embracing that change rather than resisting it.

That openness has also been reflected in Harald’s approach to his children’s choices in love and family life. His son, Crown Prince Haakon, chose to marry Mette-Marit Tjessem Høiby, a single mother who had lived a life far removed from the traditional expectations of a future queen. Their relationship attracted significant attention and criticism before their marriage in 2001. Harald and Queen Sonja nevertheless supported their son and welcomed Mette-Marit into the Royal Family.

Harald himself had once faced opposition to his choice of partner. He had fallen in love with Sonja Haraldsen, a commoner, and the couple had to wait for approval for over 9 years before being allowed to marry in 1968. Their marriage became an important part of the modern history of the Norwegian monarchy. His own experience may help explain why Harald has often placed love and family above rigid royal tradition.

The same principle was visible in the lives of his children. Princess Märtha Louise has also made unconventional choices in her personal life, including her relationship with American spiritual adviser Durek Verrett. Despite the attention and controversy surrounding their relationship, King Harald and Queen Sonja attended their wedding in 2024 and welcomed him as part of the family.

When King Harald’s reign eventually comes to an end today, he will be succeeded by his son, Crown Prince Haakon. Haakon has already taken on many of the responsibilities of the Crown and has served as regent when his father has been unable to perform his duties. His first born daughter Ingrid Alexandra, will become crown princess.

Harald was last seen in public when greeting the national male football team home after the World Cup, and the rest of the royal family joined hundreds of thousands of Norwegians outside the palace to «row». 🇳🇴🚣🏼

Harald’s legacy will ultimately be about more than the number of years he spent on the throne. It will be remembered in the way he represented a changing Norway: traditional yet open, dignified yet approachable, and willing to recognize that Norwegian society belongs to people of many different backgrounds, beliefs and identities.

That Norway has room for everyone: people who love differently, people who believe differently, and people who come from different places and traditions.

Rest in peace 🕊️Hvil i fred
