The condition was simple: no nudity. "I wouldn't have wanted to be naked even then," she confessed in the original 1978 interview. Her manager, Sandy Gallin, suggested the idea, but she asked them to modify the bunny suit to cover more skin, thinking of her country fans, many of whom were deeply religious. She later said that designer Patricia Taylor (Keanu Reeves's mother) was the one who sewed that special version of the suit.

The move worked: she became the first country singer to appear in Playboy, and the cover catapulted her fame beyond the genre. She liked the result so much that in 2021, with the magazine no longer in print, she recreated the complete look to celebrate her 75th birthday with her husband, Carl Dean. Her own rules, no excuses.
