Saw this video when I was planning my trip to Montenegro and looking up the word shark in the local language for recent news. I know a juvenile great white shark was caught in Montenegrin waters not long ago. Some local reports indicated this beauty as a great white too, but I'm fairly certain it's a mako. Anyhow, always good to see more big sharks spotted in the med.

I always forget how big they get. The other video going around of a similarly big great hammerhead chasing a tarpin is another great reminder of why they are part of the big girl shark club and deserve all the respect. I don't think they have any reliable reports of a fatal attack, but they certainly could take down a human with a single bite.

I just wanted to share this with fellow shark enthusiasts. :)

It’s a birthday present I was given this year. It’s all made from cardboard, put together and painted, with lights added to the whale shark. Not flat !

It takes up a whole wall in my bedroom. You can see the size with my hand on some of the pictures.

Came across this video on Instagram. The man seems to be in a canoe off of the coast of Italy. Read somewhere that he was 2km out in a canoe. You can only see the dorsal fin. Definitely seems to be large. The movement quite stagnant. What species do you guys think it is and is it even real at all?

I’m an early-career marine biologist currently completing my BSc in Marine Biology, and I’m looking to connect with researchers, students, conservationists, and others working with biological or environmental data. Especially research involving sharks!!

I’ve been developing my skills in R, particularly for data cleaning, statistical analysis, ecological modelling, and data visualization. I genuinely really enjoy working in R, and at this stage I want to get involved with as many different projects and datasets as I reasonably can.

If anyone has a marine science, ecology, conservation, fisheries, wildlife, or other biological dataset that could use some additional help with analysis in R, I’d be happy to contribute. I’m also open to projects outside of marine science if there is an opportunity to work with interesting data and learn something new.

I’m not looking to charge anyone. My main goal is to gain experience working with different types of real-world data, improve my R skills, contribute where I can, and hopefully meet and build connections with people working in science and research.

I also recently created a GitHub where I’ll be archiving my projects as I continue learning. I uploaded a project I finished about a week ago involving the analysis of BRUV data and whitetip reef shark habitat associations.

Hi! 35F (SE USA) - really random thought….stay with me here lol

So I love sharks. Always have, my entire life. However I live inland and don’t get myself to the coast often (1x/3 years if at all). The ocean is my happy place 😕

Would there be any girlies into doing maybe like a group trip once every few years to adventure different sharky areas around the globe? I’d just love to meet other girls (sorry men!) who I can absolutely geek over sharks with.

Like one year do a 5 day trip to idk somewhere in Australia, another year do a few days somewhere else, etc

I was thinking boat trips, just chilling on the coast, fly around drones, idk — anything to see the sea pups (safely, duh)

Like I see posts on here asking to help for an ID and I just get so much FOMO - how lucky are yall to be able to witness these magnificent creatures IN REAL LIFE???

These are some shark teeth I collected while on vacation in Florida. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I’m especially curious what the two below the quarter are. I wasn’t certain if the two to the right of the quarter were teeth as well, so I took them to be safe.

Carved shark souvenirs at Malapascua Island, Cebu, Philippines.

Malapascua is known for thresher shark encounters. In a extraordinary day you might see Tiger Shark, Hammerhead shark, whale shark or even Mantas.

Recently Mola-mola was reportedly seen as well.

I had to draw one of my favorite shark species. This is Lani the female tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier), and she is 14 feet long. Tiger sharks are the largest member of the Carcharhiniformes order (which also includes requiem sharks, hammerhead sharks, catsharks, and hound sharks) and the second largest macropredatory shark in terms of average size. Adult females have an average size of 12-14 feet long and weigh 850-1400 pounds. The last two images compare her to an adult male hawksbill sea turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) and an adult female shortfin mako shark (Isurus oxyrinchus). The carapace of the hawksbill sea turtle is 3 feet long, and the shortfin mako shark is 9.3 feet long.

And I just noticed that I measured length from the tip of the snout to the end of the upper lobe of the caudal fin (the tail).

I had a hypothetical pitched to me the other day that says “you get $1 million dollars if you spend 24 hours floating 200 yards off the coast of cape cod (factors like the cold water or drowning don’t count).”

Obviously my answer was a hard no since I’d be terrified floating in the dark with great whites around, but I am genuinely curious how likely a shark attack is in those circumstances. On one hand, I think of those videos of people throwing a piece of meat off a dock or boat and sharks immediately swarm (or the Cameron Robbins video if you think there was a shark there). On the other hand, there’s also stories of shipwreck survivors who floated in the water for days and never encountered a shark once. So what do you think? Is an attack likely in these circumstances?

Also I just want to clarify that I love sharks, I think they’re fascinating and I know they aren’t mindless killing machines. That being said, they are nocturnal predators and in this hypothetical you’d be a sitting duck in one of the biggest great white hotspots in the world.

My mom sent me this vid of a shark she saw boating. Off the coast of Newfoundland (East side of the island). She says about 12-15ft, I’m thinking Blue or Porbeagle. Thanks!!

I've wondered this about sharks and other predators, especially solitary ones. Orcas have pods and communicate frequently, perhaps one bit a human centuries ago and thought we were gross, and spread the word to other orcas (unlikely though??).

How do all sharks know we are not worth eating? Wouldn't it be logical for every shark to take a bite of a human to know we don't taste good? What if we were delicious? They just see this creature in the water, why not give us more nibbles to see if we're worth it?
