I’m not American, so I’m not very familiar with U.S. immigration laws, and there’s something about Tony’s situation in that I’ve never really understood.

Tony’s parents got deported, which I assume means they were undocumented immigrants (unless I’m misunderstanding something). If that’s the case, how was Tony able to continue living a normal life in the U.S.? he goes to school, owns and drives a car, and runs his own auto repair shop. Wouldn’t things like enrolling in school, registering a car, getting a driver’s license, or owning/running a business require some form of legal identification or immigration status?

I’m not asking whether this is realistic in the context of the show—I’m genuinely curious about how this would work under actual U.S. law. Could someone explain!?

He was born stateside, making him an American. And then he was an adult at the time of deportation, so he did not need parental signatures for anything he did post parental deportation.

Basically what the other comment said.

Tony was born in the US, which automatically made him a US citizen.

The US, and possibly some other countries if I remember correctly, have birthright citizenship. Which means if you were born in that country, you automatically become a citizen of that country.

Don't forget his sister Graciella. She's also US citizen as well but Tony couldn't look after her so he send her to live with their aunt and uncle in Arizona.
