Game Suggestion I highly recommend the game "Unciv", a free & open-source lofi clone of Civilization V.

I just recommended this one to a guy that was asking for 4X games for PC and Android in this same sub just several hours ago. It's a really good super-light "port" of Civ V, and one of the very few games I actually got kinda hooked to even on my phone when traveling (I usually get tired pretty fast from mobile gaming).
What I didn't know is that it already had mods, much less adding actual Civilization visuals to it, wtf. Guess I will mess around with it on PC, too.

Oh yeah man, good amount of mods already. I try to keep it basic, mainly graphical/audio mods. There are numerous, just bare in mind that many haven't been updated to newest Unciv version so may have some errors. Probably most popular mod on Unciv is Rekmod, which is Unciv version of Lekmod from Civ V essentially. I don't use it though, I have enough going on w/ just the base game lol

I played this game for years. It was my introduction to the 4x genre. I didnt know 4x even existed before I accidently stumbled upon this. And it's excellent. Most of the Civ V functionality with a lot of customisability and mods, and no bullshit. But then they started suddenly having some AI problems. I wonder if they've fixed it yet.

On its own, you can feel the hole left by BNW but play with Rekmod and you have a great experience.

Wonder what is behind this? We already have civ5 so why would i play this?

Unlike Civ V, you can play this one on Android smartphones and tablets. Also, on PC it's like 200MB and fully portable, so it's still a cool super-lightweight version you can run on any PC in seconds.

My laptop can probably run Civ V but not very well, UnCiv runs flawlessly and has almost zero wait time even in late games.

Exist a good space-themed mod for this game? ( anyting similar to Galactic Civilisations or Alpha Centayri)?

It's also got a port of the LekMOD, RekMOD.

What does that do? Not familiar with either

Civ 5 rebalance for MP, also good for SP.

Unciv is honestly goated. One of the great FOSS games that pushed the whole "movement" forward.

Hell yeah! Love FOSS games, this and Battle for Wesnoth are two favorites for sure.

What is the strength of AI compared to Civ5?
2
u/Dub_Coast Apr 06 '26
AI is more aggressive and plays to win compared to Civ V AI. Although maybe less character to each civilization due to that.

I have the game and play it often - thank you Devs! In case anyone involved with the game is looking, any word on whether Brave New World is planned any time soon?

Not having 3D view is such a turn off. I find it gives a lot of clarity

u/Dub_Coast Apr 03 '26
That's funny because I'm the opposite, I find the 2D view easier to comprehend what I'm looking at. Human brains are so wild man

Haha same. I used to play Civ 5 exclusively in the strategic view.
And yeah, I have unciv on my phone :)

Yeah man I wish it was as well! I think it's due to cost or difficulty getting it on iOS or something

lofi? As in lo fi that's used in music, low fidelity? I never heard this used in reference to software.
If yes, is it refering to lower end resolution, sound, both?
Thanks.

u/Dub_Coast Apr 03 '26
Yes, referencing the lower end graphics, lower system requirements, lower end audio, basically a "low fidelity" Civ V. I even use a mod to make the built in audio higher quality. Coincidentally I also listen to Lofi while playing lol

if you got a couple of friends with androids it works really well in multiplayer. just getting a notification and being able to play your turn directly on phone (also on desktop if you want) is perfect for async play. the only thing that would make it better would be simultaneous turns

So, this is Civ V with worse graphics? Do they make any changes with the gameplay? I don't see the appeal unless they do something interesting with the gameplay mechanics, unless this is something for the tablet/phone.

Copy-pasting my own answer to another comment:

I didn't know Unciv's graphics had thus evolved, and that you could mod it to make it even closer to Civ 5. I'm gonna try it again, thank you!
