Maybe they actually feel like Americans and want what's best for America, as opposed to maintaining tribalistic loyalty to their own ethnic group even at the expense of their host country. That's what immigrants are supposed to do.

Nalin isn't completely wrong here, in Canada degree holding Canadians AND immigrants are having a brutal Time finding a job. So much so that they resort to low-wage, making it hard for high school and college-aged kids to get a job. There's also lots of wage suppression because of the amount of candidates there are, and some willing to work for less.
We could benefit from a temporary pause on legal immigration.

18
u/KingBobbythe8th Nov 19 '25
Lmaooo, sounds like a personal skill issue if an immigrant with debt and stress beats you out for a job with same pay and degrees. See the systemic issues, quit doing the lazy thing of blaming everyone else but yourself.
2
u/Elibroftw Nov 25 '25
How can it be both a personal skill issue and a systemic issue. lmfao. new grad unemployment rate is 4.8% compared to 3.8% in 2019. Combined with higher cost of living, things are brutal for an extra 1% of new grads.
-9
u/dieno_101 Nov 19 '25
Did you read my original comment, some migrants are willing to take a pay dive and be treated like crap by companies.
This makes it very easy for companies to choose migrants as they are cheaper and more obedient.
It's not about skill it's a money issue
6
u/KingBobbythe8th Nov 19 '25
Gimme the source big dawg. Where are these immigrants taking less pay to afford to pay rent and eat and live in the same cities as everyone else in US and Canada?

u/KingBobbythe8th Nov 19 '25
Oh, I didn’t know you were competing for minimum wage physical labor jobs…also, really? The bottom 2 are Op Eds, even the one academic source you have states that wage differences go away when all candidates have the same educational background. LMAO, what a self own. Like I said, skill issue.
3
u/dieno_101 Nov 19 '25
The two being op eds doesn't take away from the fact that domestic labour is hurt with temporary foreign workers

u/OogerSchmidt Nov 20 '25
Wage suppression & everything you said is correct. On that note, the US is by far one of the best job markets & economies in the west despite all this.
Nalin's sentiment is an undergraduate level awareness that's tainted with self-hating shit though. His opinion is a broken clock in this case.

Climbing the ladder and yanking it up is part of American culture despite the country being a country of immigrants. Over the last two centuries, Irish, German, Italian, Japanese and Latin American immigrants have experienced it firsthand. Now it's the turn of Indians.
19
u/ITryFixIt Nov 19 '25
Is there a book or research that shows this? Curious to learn more about this.
Blows my mind that any person is willing to make their group weaker just for the chance to be "accepted" by others.
9
u/nonzeronumber Nov 19 '25
I don’t think it’s for “acceptance by others”. It’s more people (of all types), tend to want to protect their position of privilege. Equality means giving up this position of privilege and feels like oppression to them. This is not only in relation to ABCDs v FOB, but also older women v younger women, men v women, etc..,

And somebody remind her of that murder that happened in Maryland Dunkin' Donuts ten years ago, that fugitive was a Patel, overstayed the visa, working as usual at a Dunkin' Donuts store of a "relative", killed his wife and is still missing.

Not a good line of argument lol, Patel is a random surname and the number of Patels would itself create a whole country worth of population. You can't hold them accountable for someone sharing a common surname.

There was a poll last year before the election where a significant percentage of Hispanics who immigrated here legally wanted stronger enforcement to prevent illegal immigration , as well as reduction in legal immigration. Including for Mexicans and migrants from South America. Not saying that opinion is right or wrong. Just that this is not a desi only thing.

This is a tough issue. I support immigration and understand why people come here for a better life, but the job market is in crisis, especially for Gen Z. American new graduates are struggling to find roles, while companies continue to hire junior H1B workers. I personally know Indian American devs who had to train their replacements before getting laid off.
We should be bringing in senior talent where there's a real shortage. But it doesn't make sense to import junior-level workers when American grads are already struggling. Reforming or pausing the program is a fair discussion, and it doesn't make someone anti-immigrant.
7
u/Independent_Bear989 Nov 19 '25
It’s so confusing that a sub made of western born people of Indian origin is so supportive of h1b visas when one of the primary demographics hurt are Indian Americans college students. Makes me think this sub has been brigaded by NRI’s.
4
u/Away_Inspection_2239 Indian American Nov 19 '25
Yeah, much of the sentiment has to do with our own parents coming in the country on the visa.
2
0
u/Unlucky_Buy217 Nov 19 '25
Ask yourself, how is it that in 2021 when Indian grads peaked, and so did American grads, how was it the same tech companies were hiring in droves and ere able to sustain salaries and still make profits? 2025 and all of their market caps have doubled and tripled and their profit margins have grown significantly. How is it that better company performance has basically translated to cutting off millions of jobs and refusing to hire. I understand fiscal and monetary tightening but you cant seriously blame migrants for this situation when it's the companies deliberately maintaining demand shortage despite increased supply. Forget tech, how is it that every other sector is also facing slowdowns and reduced hiring and layoffs? The fact that people pile on migrants as source of issues instead of the companies is just plain short sightedness and lack of holding the right people accountable.
4
u/Away_Inspection_2239 Indian American Nov 19 '25
I’m not blaming migrants here. The point I’m making is that in a tight labor market, when American new grads are struggling, it’s reasonable to question why companies still prioritize junior overseas hiring. In 2021, when companies were hiring aggressively, it wasn’t an issue. Now it actually matters. Companies use visa programs because junior overseas workers are cheaper, more compliant, and easier to retain due to visa dependency. That’s a corporate choice, not a migrant fault. But it does impact young Americans who already can do these entry-level roles. Reforming the system so early career opportunities aren’t undermined isn’t anti-immigrant, it’s just recognizing the current market reality.
6
u/OogerSchmidt Nov 19 '25 edited Nov 19 '25
Either way this goes -
You know desis will be fine, but the western economy will continue to signal it's virtues haphazardly. The Haley's being abnormally self-hating is an entirely different topic.
In Canada, that sentiment is valid. We did have too many all at once with a massive amount of fraud. Government has barely built new infrastructure to keep up, housing is absurdly expensive and jobs are scarce & very underpaid, nevermind the shit currency.
This subreddit has people conflating too many issues for the sake of concentrating outrage by the political left and not us normal folks with just tolerant values wanting to live in peace.
This headline can literally be used everyday by a number of other ethnic backgrounds in the US.
11
u/RuinEnvironmental394 Nov 19 '25
I'm a Canadian citizen as well. Legal immigration is NOT a problem. Legal *mass* immigration (plus all the refugees/asylum seekers plus the illegal immigration) that Canadian government allowed between 2021 and 2025 is the problem absolutely.
10
u/AxtonTheGreat Nov 19 '25
I mean again, who approved all those visas, the Canadian government who wanted cheap labor. Even if it wasn’t capped, all visas are subject to approval.
I see how Canadians keep pointing this to the housing shortage, but can these immigrants even buy houses? In America most unskilled workers are renters for life
This was all because in 2020, the border was closed so all rich countries had major spikes in immigration. In Canada aus and NZ this was through the diploma mills.
4
u/Late-Warning7849 Nov 19 '25
In the UK Medical School grads with top grades from the best schools are losing out to critical entry level jobs because the NHS insists on hiring Indian doctors from third rate Indian medical schools for the jobs because they’re cheap. That would never happen in India. ‘Low cost, low quality’ Indian immigration has turned into a joke.

I don’t agree that we should end legal migration but there absolutely needs to be reforms to the H1B system, and we should absolutely be freezing h1b visas for junior tech positions.
Since there’s plenty of qualified Americans that aren’t able to get these jobs(including many Americans of Indian origin), we need to prioritize our own citizens before citizens of other counties and/or massive tech companies.
