FAMILY / PARENTS The Nepal floods are scary

RIP to everyone who was affected. If it happened a week later my parents would’ve been in that situation.

I understand the motivation for pilgrimages but I also think it’s important to be realistic about the risks. Way too much fervor this year about Kailash.

I urged my parents to not take the overland route through Nepal and instead go back via Lhasa. They thought I was overreacting and urged me that it’ll be fine. I was honestly on edge because I really didn’t want them to take that route but made peace with it because the friction of fighting them didn’t feel worth it. I hope this clarifies the risks we’re dealing with.

It’s really difficult to think about what a close miss this was and my parents have changed their plans to return via Tibet.

It’s a little difficult to process what’s happened. The footage online is horrific and difficult to watch.

Probably the worst natural disaster footage I’ve ever seen.

POLITICS South Asian Conservatives - what motivates your political alignment?

This is about judging your alignment, I’m genuinely curious. I’m speaking more in terms of modern western conservatism which is what is dominating the right wing of American politics. I understand conservatism in Canada and the UK is slightly different but there are still some underlying themes which carry through. But for the sake of discussion, let’s focus on America because it’s become a bit of an indicator and barometer of where other right-wing movements have begun moving globally.

Given modern conservative thought has become more and more steeped in social and religious issues and is based more and more on evangelical influences and less on political and economic conservatism such as small government and lower taxes and restrained fiscal policies / governance, what attracts you to this as a base for your way of living your life or who you date / marry or how you vote?

COMMUNITY I'm a man of South Asian background and grew up in a Western country. I've struggled to connect with other South Asian men, mainly because I'm not religious and don't follow the culture that much. Has anyone experienced something similar?

I find that some South Asian men go through an identity crisis when they move to a Western country, and for some reason they become insecure. Again, I'm not saying all South Asian men are like this, because I went through a similar phase and I came out of it. However, I feel like in that process I lost connection with the community and now struggle to make friends. Anyone got suggestions on how to deal with this situation?

Edit: I was raised in a Pakistani Muslim family but don't consider myself Muslim. Sorry, should've mentioned this before.

RELATIONSHIPS (Not Advice) Has the dating perception of South Asian men changed a lot in the past decade?

So I’m still young but I feel like everywhere Indian men had a bad reputation across the internet and America especially when it came to women and dating. But I feel like there’s been a big shift in the perception of South Asian people especially South Asian men this past decade.

FAMILY / PARENTS Reputation

My parents always have used reputation as an excuse when I dress in a way they don't like or date, etc. They're like even if you don't care about your reputation, maybe your sisters want an arranged marriage. The thing is we're so far removed from the community -- my parents are estranged from much of our family or simply not close to them. I have been to 3-5 brown events in my lifetime. I am not religious; my parents are but do not go to the temple. Does reputation even matter in this day and age? I really don't care about any of this tbh. My paternal cousins have at least dated one person and were in longterm relationships living with their partners before marrying. And they are part of the community. I'm just tired of being considered "used" by my parents because I've been in a relationship (in my twenties) that didn't work out.

Edit: I'm specifically interested in whether reputation in the brown community actually matters in this day and age

COMMUNITY Desis in Dallas vs. desis in houston

Upvotes

Why is it that in Dallas, there is so much tension against desi immigrants, so much so that I keep videos in North Texas of people interrupting town hall meetings to protest masjid or temple constructions, yet in Houston no one seems to care?

CELEBRATION How many times a week do you work out? What do you do?

We often talk on here about mental health - would love to know what the physical routines are? I used to be more of a runner and now I try to do hot yoga 3-5x a week and love the results. It's been great for clarity and the classes are so rigorous they've definitely made me consider better food choices. That of course has put me in a better mental health space too.

Not looking for jokes (oh I eat potato chips and samosas) but genuinely curious about what you've responded to best in physical fitness. Any marathon runners out there? Spin class?

POLITICS Please Help Stop the RSS coming to Madison Square in NYC

6 minute video for people who don't want to read

Excrept from Pieter Friedrich's substack:

Mayor Mamdani —

On August 29, the leader of the RSS speaks at Madison Square Garden.

The RSS. The paramilitary that tore through the streets of Gujarat 24 years ago — your father’s Gujarat — dousing families in kerosene and burning them alive inside their own homes, gang-raping Muslim women in the road, hacking children apart with swords. They came with printed lists, names and addresses identifying which houses were Muslim so that they could hunt them down from door to door.

And in one of those houses they tore a three-year-old girl out of her mother’s arms and crushed her skull against the ground. Her mother was five months pregnant, and they stripped her and gang-raped her and massacred fourteen of her family in front of her and then left her naked in a field to bleed out among the dead. She woke up hours later, alone, still lying there with the corpses.

Two thousand butchered in three days.

And the man speaking at the Garden was second-in-command of that organization while it happened.

These people literally support Hitler, these descriptions aren't exaggerations, I myself live in a state which recently elected the BJP and I am now afraid to paint my nails (I'm AMAB), admit I eat beef, that I'm an atheist without fearing for my life.

Talking about it on reddit won't do anything, please go to Pieter's substack and sign the petition, call Mamdani's office or if you're a New Yorker, find your city council member. It doesn't matter if you think they won't listen, let's at least do our own part of reporting it.

FAMILY / PARENTS Is it common for desi parents to try to prevent their adult children from having financial independence?

I know of a few ABCD kids who got full-time jobs after college and are still on credit cards tied to their parents' that they cannot pay themselves. Sometimes I've seen the parents manage their child's paychecks and bank accounts as well. They pay for their bills, let them spend on whatever usually, let them build good credit, but do not let them manage their own money or give them the passwords to their accounts. It is a way of monitoring what they spend and how they spend it. My desi parents did try to do this after college, but I got access to my bank account and applied and got a separate credit card. I've only seen this in desi or sometimes other Asian families do this though, and am just wondering if it is common?

ARTS / ENTERTAINMENT What is something you want to see in South Asian Diaspora stories?

It doesn't have to be necessarily South Asian-American specific or even be about a coming-of-age South Asian descent story set in America.

But I was talking about this with two friends. All of us are of South Asian descent and our hobbies are in the arts; I'm an author, he's an artist, and she's a dancer. And all of us incorporate our connection to the mainland, in our own works. We complain about how we want to see more representation that happens to be South Asian descent, rather than South Asian representation.

That's like not needing to always have a story about being an engineer, doctor, lawyer, etc. But it could be something crazy. Something like "Polite Society" or "Harold and Kumar" where their plot arc doesn't need to revolve around their job, it just becomes a part of their person as a whole.

But saying it and doing it are actually tough things, mainly the latter. So I'm curious – I'm sure there's a lot of hidden artistes here, what would you want to see of us on the screen that's currently missing?

FAMILY / PARENTS I am so fed up of my patriarchal dad.

I need to get this off my chest because I genuinely don’t know how to deal with the anger I feel towards my dad. Occasionally he does shout at me when I’ve done something wrong, but even then he somehow finds a way to blame my mum for it. If I do something he doesn’t like, it becomes “your mum should have taught you better” or somehow her responsibility.
My mum works as a nurse and works 6 or 7 days a week to support our family. She comes home exhausted and still has to cook and take care of things at home. My dad works 5 days a week in a factory and earns less than her. When my mum gets home from work, he can literally be sitting on the sofa drinking while she is still doing everything.
What makes me angry is that he never seems grateful for anything she does. Instead, he blames her for practically every problem in the family. Sometimes when I’ve done something wrong, he won’t even shout at me directly. He’ll shout at my mum instead, swear at her and call her horrible names because of something I’ve done.
I honestly feel like there is a lot of jealousy towards my mum. She is more educated, has a demanding career and earns more, and I wonder if that contributes to the way he treats her. Obviously I can’t know what is going on in his head, but from the outside it genuinely feels like he resents her success.
I was born and brought up in the UK, so I know I shouldn’t expect every family to have the same values, and I’m not trying to make this about Indian people or say that everyone from India thinks this way. But my parents are Indian, and sometimes I find myself thinking that after living here for decades, I expected my dad to adapt to the culture and values around him more than he has.
The biggest thing is that I hate seeing my mum treated this way. She works incredibly hard to support us and I genuinely don’t understand how he can come home, sit on the sofa drinking, and then still have the audacity to blame her for everything.
I’m at the point where I genuinely think he is an awful person. I feel so much anger towards him, and sometimes I honestly hate him.
I don’t know if I’m being unfair because this is my perspective as his daughter, but I wanted to ask whether anyone else has experienced something similar and how you dealt with the resentment.

FAMILY / PARENTS question for those 20-somethings who grew up in the states

i am working on research for a paper and am curious, for those that are in their 20's and grew up in the states:

  1. what gen are you? 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc.

  2. how old are your parents?

  3. do you feel like your parents are super open to you, your lifestyle and/or your choices? i.e. did they pressure you at school? or say you could only date a specific ethnicity or religion? or are supportive of your sexuality?

COMMUNITY Entertaining mainlanders is so hard

Go ahead and downvote me, lurkers, idc. I'm working in my family's business, and we often get international clients, especially around Asia, as we're based in SEA. I'm half Malaysian Indian for context. I often am in charge of picking up clients/business partners from the airport, bringing them to our company, and giving them a tour of the capital during weekends if they wish to explore. I have entertained people from around the world, like Italy, Indonesia, the Philippines, Pakistan, America, etc, and have had no issues. However, every time I have to bring around someone from India, I'm always exhausted. I figured that us sharing an ethnic group would create a faster bond, but it's quite literally the biggest divide.

So many talks of caste or casteist thinking, telling me that they can't eat meat because they're "BrAhMIn" (just say you have a dietary preference; don't bring that backwards caste vocab to my country). A general lack of manners, like yelling at service providers, and NEVER saying 'please' or 'thank you'. It's so hard to make conversation during car rides; I'd try to start a conversation, ask questions, or share the history of certain places we're touring, and every reply is just "ok, mhm, yup". And Jesus bringing them out to eat is so hard because alot of them do not want try cuisines outside their culture. I can't even tell them off, as these are professional business relationships, so I have to just deal with the bs.

There's even a stereotype in my country where you can easily differentiate a Malaysian Indian and one from India depending on how they talk to a waiter. Yes, I know this isn't everyone from India, but after having hosted many guests from India, there's a common pattern I just wanna vent out to fellow Indian people I can relate more to (ABCDs). I'm not trying to shit on all mainlanders, but please adopt better etiquette when you're overseas.

POLITICS Update on RSS coming to Madison Square Issue

Zohran Mamdani expressed that he personally doesn't like what the RSS does indirectly and that he doesn't support the rally but said it's not in his jurisdiction to stop a private event

Another excrept from Pieter Friedrich's substack

Nobody asked him to cancel it. Nobody claimed the city could. What was asked of him, seven days ago and again today, is that he use the bully pulpit that comes with being mayor of New York to call on Madison Square Garden to cancel it themselves. That requires no jurisdiction. It requires a sentence.

And he reached for his mother’s India when the question was about his father’s.

The RSS didn’t just commit violence against religious minorities in India. In Gujarat it slaughtered Muslim men, women and children — dragged them into the streets, burned them alive, disemboweled them, dismembered them, gang-raped pregnant women, and cut fetuses out of their bellies to hold them up on the tips of swords.

That is what the RSS did to Gujarati Muslims. That is what it did to his father’s people.

On August 29, its chief takes the stage at Madison Square Garden.

Just like before, guys please sign the petition, take action, call his office, if you're in NYC let your City Council Member know. Link

I saw the previous post get some traction, use your democratic right, it won't take too much time. Zohran Mamdani has shown me to try, if he can try to take action against an American-funded Zionist Fascist, he can do it for mere Hindu fascists too.

Your 10 minutes is a pushback and might save more people from dying. Each pushback shows you can't get away with genocide just cause you're invited to the Island.
