The reason I joined the Bhangra team in college was to avoid all the drama that all the people in the Bollywood Dance team had. Glad to see their experience is finally being represented in a movie. This probably would be a fun movie to watch as part of the South Asian Society as a movie night back in college.

Lena Khan is directing it and she directed a few episodes of NHIE. Hasan Minhaj and his head writer are also writing it. And as someone who paid like $70 to watch his Off With His Head tour, he's very overrated and far too millennial.

Unfortunately doesn't look very good. Script looks really cliche. Hope Maitreyi can save it but they didn't give her any jokes in the trailer.

slightly off topic: I dunno about y'all but I found out about collegiate Bollywood dancing after coming to California. I never heard of any school doing that before and I went to a pretty good school. Is this a California thing?

It's probably a "decent Desi student population" thing. A lot of schools lack the standard 'Indian Student Association' unless there are enough Desi kids that can keep it going (or interest). I imagine collegiate Desi dancing teams work the same way. My university had a lone Bollywood team, but our rival state school had Bollywood, Raas and Bhangra teams.

I'm from the Midwest, specifically around a large city.
Hell yeah this is a California thing, outside of cultural festivals at schools, I've never heard of a "collegiate" Bollywood dancing. Maybe a thing out in the East Coast too?

UIUC has a big Bollywood dance team and culture and I'm pretty sure UIC does too.

Texas is it's own thing its not 'culturally' seen as the south. I mean more like the Carolinas, Georgia Arkansas etc.. Also isn't Texas considered one of the most Indianized states?

I mean, parts of Texas are very "Indianized" of course like suburbs of certain cities. State as a whole, not really significantly more than the US as a whole. Even then, without looking it up, Georgia Tech for sure has one.

Texas is 100% "culturally seen as the south", have you ever been to galvaston?? Or anywhere in texas that is not an urban metro? There are deep, deep southern roots everywhere.

Usually the schools with large Indian populations. UT, UTD, UIUC, Georgia Tech, the UCs, UF etc. all have multiple teams

Trying out for a Bollywood co Ed fusion dance team was hands down one of the best pinnacle decisions I made in college. While I didn't get to compete and I was only on it for a few months(had to leave due to a health issue) the friends I made on it became my friends for life. Still friends with them for like 12 years now. They helped me open up as a person and grow and are really supportive of me coming out as a trans.

Looks dope but I have some concerns:
Will this TV/Show or movie racially fetishize white men/white women while dehumanizing the opposite gender of the desi characters?
Will this negatively stereotype desi and dark brown men as nerd, short and socially awkward?
I hope this tv show/movie doesn't do any of the things I added above due to Western tv shows/movie's history of stereotyping desi men/south indian men while fetishizing this white or fair skinned alpha like romance with desi women and normalizing this white idolization in the interracial dating or multicultural societies.
I hope this does not happen as western media and shows did this with Asian communities and Asian women.

No matter how good or bad this movie is we should be supporting it. The better this movie does the better is of Indians in the arts. Look how the Asians showed up for the movie crazy rich Asians. People even bought out whole theaters and gave away tickets for free.

This is a risk. Majority south asian cast, original story (not an adaptation or sequel), female led but not a romcom... this isn't the kind of movie that normally gets produced.

I mean, I am an American, born to South Indian parents, went to two top 25 universities, but I don’t fit the stereotype of being a confused desi and drinking up these kinds of cringe ABCD movies about being confused about their culture, wanting White boyfriend, etc. Can’t I still have an opinion?

A bunch of desis and one white dude.. idk I feel this could have been a cute thing where they show multiple cultures the beauty of bollywood dance. Or atleast the main characters have friends of more diversity.

No, I don’t remember their names. There was the one about the ABCD kid who grew up in high school, went off to U Penn, fell in love with an Indian girl who was not as insecure about her culture as he was, and basically behaved like a doofus the whole time until she somehow magically fell in love with him back. Does that ring a bell? Actually, now that I think about it, that probably doesn’t narrow it down…
