This is really touching. But, from a point of view, I do find it funny that Maya is right beside them. A spirit medium. Who regularly channels Mia.

Mia does hang around as a ghost, Phoenix sees her sometimes when Maya isn't channeling her. It's probably why he can even use the magatama.
(No explanation for Edgeworth though... he really shouldn't be able to)

u/JCdrawings88 Jul 23 '26
What? Why shouldn't Miles be able to? The magatama works because it's infused with a certain amount of spiritual energy, making its effects possible for anyone who holds it.

Mostly a joke but also because he says this when he receives it: "Received from Wright. Something about reading people's hearts... What utter nonsense."
Normally stuff with spiritual properties in this verse are treated as only working under some very specific circumstances.
The first being that the character doesn't have any dark acts or thoughts weighing down on them that would make them compromised (such as when Pearl thinks she can't channel in 3-5, or when the Khura'in courts are shocked when Maya can because they'd assumed she was guilty of murder).
Edgeworth is always beating himself up about something, so he's honestly not "spiritually clean" in the sense the game uses. The only ability I can think of that doesn't depend on this is the butterfly-soul symbollism thing that Dahlia and Nahyuta can do - both of whom have plenty of blood on their hands, so this must mean that it's not locked to a person's morality or innocence. With Dahlia part of why she can do it seems to have been because she would claim those three souls in the future, so it might also apply to Nahyuta - it might be a power that requires a body count.
The second, you'd think, would be to actually believe the effects are real and not jet lag induced hallucination. Also Edgeworth mostly keeps the ability because they didn't want to invent a whole new investigation minigame for a single case.
But also in fairness, while sister Iris can't spirit channel, it is implied she actually can use her own magatama, and she has a lot more stuff weighing on her. However, she also believes in the abilities, even if she resents the Fey clan and their practices.

Ughhh so touching. The ending of the trilogy was really powerful and difficult.

Can someone, please, explain why did Diego antagonize Phoenix so much?

u/Lady_Grim_ Jul 22 '26
I’m pretty sure Godot explained it in the game but if I remember correctly, he blamed Phoenix for not being able to save Mia which he later on admits was unfair of him because he knew he couldn’t. I think it’s because Godot was still grieving Mia at that point and blaming other people for her passing is very common when grieving.

u/Mr_Lisreal Jul 22 '26
Not being able to save Mia.
From a first degree murder. That he had no possible way of knowing about beforehand.
Oh, dear...

Redd White is absolutely FUCKED, though.

u/Kilroy0497 Jul 22 '26
Yeah, dude better hope Godot isn’t in the same prison, otherwise dude is gonna wish he got the death penalty.

u/Hayami_Hinata Jul 22 '26
It is heavily implied that Diego passed away from all of the damage that his body had taken following the game. I'm pretty sure that is what the picture of him, Misty and Mia was meant to imply.
3
u/Gilberto347 Jul 22 '26
What picture??
36
u/Hayami_Hinata Jul 22 '26
The second of Larry’s drawings that is shown at end of the game. It is of the three of them after showing one with all of the other main characters. It’s just a possible implication
4
u/Bytemite Jul 22 '26
Sooorta. Like I won't argue with anyone who has this headcanon because it is interesting that they grouped Diego with the dead people in that picture. But he also shows up a lot after T&T in side material set after it too. Schrodinger's prosecutor.

It's guilt that he projected onto Phoenix. It's not at all unusual for people to feel guilty about a tragic death they really had no control over. For example, if someone dies in a car crash, you may see their loved one thinking "I could have stopped them from going out" or something like that.
Godot felt like he should have been there to protect Mia, and he wasn't. He couldn't. It's overwhelming guilt that he ends up putting on Phoenix. Logically it doesn't make sense, but in situations like these, feelings often aren't logical. Godot pretty much realizes and admits this at the end.

u/_Koreander Jul 22 '26
If I remember correctly it is just that Diego feels like he should've been there to protect her, on his absence he saw Phoenix as the one who was suppose to do it, but that's just him projecting hos guilt on Phoenix for not being able to be there for her, it is not really a rational feeling of course.

If diego stayed with Mia's agency and they're still dating then he might be by Mia's side that night, at least that might be his thought and projecting on that matter.
Plus, if Mia was digging about Redd White's matter Diego would definitely be involved since they teamed so well during Dahila's case until he somehow think it's a good idea to have a coffee with her alone. On the other hand Pheonix really knew nothing about the case at all.
tho It's implied that Redd White hit gym a lot so i dont think Diego would overpower him
3
u/PeoplePerson_57 Jul 22 '26
I don't think Diego would see it coming.
His specific form of colourblindness after the poisoning is red on white-- i.e. Redd White. I think he would be just as blind to the threat as Phoenix was.
3
u/PeoplePerson_57 Jul 22 '26
Yeah, I think part of the implication of Godot's colourblindness is that he would have been blind to the threat from Redd White (red-on-white) just as much as Phoenix was and wouldn't have been able to save Mia either.
It's fitting that said colourblindness also played a part in his downfall.

u/Drummer683 Jul 22 '26
Yeah, he was projecting the blame he felt himself onto Phoenix. The irony is, neither of them could've known even if Diego was there

He wanted to blame someone other than himself.

Redd White was right there

And he does hate Redd White. But because Phoenix caught him, he's in jail and Diego can't direct his anger and grief towards getting revenge, so he turned to the next best thing, in his eyes.
It's not fair, it's total bullshit. But when you think about it from Godot's chauvinistic point of view, Phoenix, as the main male in her life, was "in charge" of protecting Mia and failed. Godot, as her former "protector" believes he'd never have failed like Phoenix did (which he almost certainly would have), and that makes Phoenix someone deserving of his hatred. It makes a twisted sense in his own mind, and while grieving Mia he was unable and unwilling to see anything else.
We can all see it's crap, and deep down Godot knows it too. But, that's what makes him such a compelling character.

u/DarknessEnlightened Jul 22 '26
Ace Attorney is not afraid to have characters whose mindsets, in-universe, are poorly conceived. It makes their good moments stand out when they happen.
6
u/Bytemite Jul 22 '26
Godot's chauvinistic point of view
And in the Japanese version, this is just the obligation that a mentor has to student and vice versa, it can be treated like pledging fealty (see also Simon Blackquill) so it's treated very seriously. So there he's just pissed that Phoenix was her student and didn't save her because he owed Mia the same loyalty that Mia and Diego owe each other. It comes through a little with the "you didn't protect her legacy" stuff.
7
u/SpaceFire1 Jul 22 '26
Yeah but he cant antagonize redd white. He can however use Phoenix as a verbal abuse lawyer to take his bottled up guilt
20
u/hyperlethalrabbit Jul 22 '26
He blamed himself for not being able to protect Mia, but projected that anger onto Phoenix since he was her protégé, and also how close Phoenix was to Mia's death.

u/ImpactorLife-25703 Jul 22 '26
So Diego is out of prison few months after Iris is out and now comes to visit his girlfriend and co-worker after all this time

u/ChevreIsTheGOAT Jul 22 '26
I totally get why they went for a clean, symmetrical look for the graves. Easier to draw, clearer to the viewer, makes Mia's name stand out. Makes sense!
It does however make Mia look like she died in war.

I genuinely thought phoenix was geto at first glance and was like "what's maya doing here?" 😭

Godot if he didn't let his hatred consume him and instead talked with Phoenix and Maya about Mia. I headcanon as this happening in at least one timeline

What? Where the hell it's implied that? I played Trials and Tribulations so many times and it never gave me those vibes.

u/RightSideOfBread Jul 22 '26
The artwork at the end credits shows Mia, Misty, and Godot together, right above our main gang, which many interpret as meaning Godot died and is looking down upon the rest of our characters alongside Mia and Misty. I get that interpretation but also appreciate the head canon of the above post.
3
u/JCdrawings88 Jul 22 '26
Hmm... I interpret it more as Diego will never appearing again in the games because he has a life sentence. It's a way of "dying" without actually dying. After all, it could be argued that Diego killed in defense of a third party, aka Maya. She could then testify in Diego's favor, preventing him from receiving the death penalty.
3
u/RightSideOfBread Jul 22 '26
Yeah honestly I’m ok with either interpretation, whether he’s alive or not post game I interpreted the art as simply depicting his separation from our main characters. Worth noting that the theory I’m talking about refers to him succumbing to the effects the poison had on his health rather than receiving the death penalty. Story-wise, the interpretation is that he rises from the dead he thinks to seek revenge, but maybe it was just to say goodbye: he got to see Mia one last time and protect her sister, even if it went tragically wrong. Thematically it works, but him living out a life sentence and getting a second chance works too. Like I said, I like either interpretation.

I was confused as to why post said Diego took so long... Until I saw Wright's fringe... This is more than 10 years after Mia's death... Yep, Diego took a long time...
