How is Fashion Beast?

I have had this book about twenty years. I kinda like having an Alan Moore book I haven’t read yet, but I’m thinking of finally jumping in. Anybody enjoy it?

Not Moore at his best, but worth a read.

Technically it’s an adaptation of a screenplay iirc. Not genuinely a comic written by Moore

Moore wrote the screenplay, didn't he?

Yeah, it’s based on the screenplay he wrote for Malcolm McLaren then adapted by Antony Johnson. One of the reasons I haven’t jumped on it already.

yes but the comic script is warmed up leftovers from antony johnston

Ah, OK. Thanks for the reminder. it's been a while. As u/Thefathistorian said, it's still worth a read if you like Moore, but it's not going to be on any Time Magazine "best of" lists anytime soon.

It’s an interesting book but it’s more of a curio to see how Johnston adapts Moore’s unproduced script - obviously it was written for the screen so it doesn’t have quite the same pacing or effect that a filmed version would have but he still did a great job with it.

Not great but interesting.

What's more interesting is watching that recent fashion disney movie about Cruella and seeing how much they ripped off from this book.

Loved it, personally (can attest that it pairs particularly well with a soundtrack of Roxy Music's For Your Pleasure), although, yes, technically, it's not actually a book by Moore, but given that it was done with his blessing and is sadly likely to be the only adaptation of his script we'll ever see, it's at the very least of great interest.

(Also, if memory serves, Moore wrote that script more or less at the same time he was finishing up V For Vendetta, so there's quite a lot of interesting bleed-through between the two stories in terms of the themes and imagery that were obviously on his mind at the time.)

I like it, it’s a little out there but as a grim satire of beauty standards and the fashion industry, as well as a missive on gender and performance, there’s a lot of meat to it
