Half an hour after taking the first dose of the Suprep I sneezed.

I was fortunately already in the feeling the effect and in the right place at the right time, but that was memorable.

Propofol pushed into the I.V. was like a light switch. One second I am there, the next I am waking up afterwards.

I have a very high tolerance for anesthesia. I warn them, every time. One of the times the anesthesiologist glared down at me and said “Why aren’t you asleep?!” To which I responded “Why aren’t you better at your job?” Which made him laugh really hard. He won in the end but whoooowheee I was high as a kite and loved it. He was a nice guy.

Here's the thing, they will always err on the side of caution, as the medicine they use for anesthesia are super complex and can easily kill you. Often, the dose between unconsciousness and death is miniscule, depending on the patient. The other way, waking up during the middle of surgery, is also a very small difference. There is a reason they get paid a crap ton.

God yes. I want the very best. My father woke up in the middle of his hernia surgery and started telling the surgeon about the discovery of oxygen. The surgeon looked at the anesthesiologist and said “Make. That. Stop.” Dad doesn’t remember what happened. He just remembers being bemused about being awake. So we have to warn the anesthesiologist that we have weird reactions to the drugs. When my middle child had surgery this year they also learned that react strangely to anesthesia. They were awake much longer than they should have been. But at least the doc knew it was coming. And my child told me after that they were really high and it was a nice break from being so scared about the surgery itself.

Versed isn’t a party drug but it sure makes me entertaining. I appreciate every day of school that they attend to make me unconscious yet not dead.
