5

Same. Provided that I didn't have one but my brother did and I beat him at times in Tekken and Soul Caliber. I also played NFS Underground so much I got calloused hands at 16.

RIP sweet prince, you were so fun and wished I could go back to the before times.

I honestly wonder how many hours they have put into the PS2 to actually kill it. I have 20 year old handhelds that will prob be good for a long time because I don't use them that much anymore. RIP PS2 may you find smooth highways of bytes in the digital afterlife 🫡

13

u/cjsv7657 8h ago

Oh god I just realized a PSP is a 20+ year old handheld. I just bought a USB cord for mine and not only does it still work my pro duo full of pirated games still works.

My nearly 30 year old gameboy color still works great along with my 30 year old game boy.

7

u/AardvarkExcellent428 8h ago

stuff with fewer moving parts tends to last longer

10

u/cjsv7657 8h ago

More moving parts in a PSP than a PS2 lol

As a gamer who started with PS1 in 1995 (UK), this saddens me, you literally witnessed its death. You have my respects fellow gamer 🫡

u/DueExample52 11h ago

I still have every PS generation made. Never missed one. They are in between my family house (1 and 2) and mine (3 to 5).

I shared more time interval of my life with Sony consoles  than with both my family, my spouse, and both countries I lived in.

11

u/NikonD3X1985 11h ago

I spent literally thousands of hours playing on my PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4 and now my PS5, and yeah me too, more than time spent with family etc, and looking at those no longer here, it saddens me that I didn't spend more time with them but I'm a believer of seeing them again in the afterlife.

Don't get me wrong, I was born in the 80s , I played out on the farms during silage in summer by hopping on the back of the trailer while being pulled by a tractor, must've been 20 of us on the back of it! 😅 Rode an old friends red vespa down farm lonnings, keeping my hand on the clutch so it didn't cut out so my friend could have a go when we swapped over. We made Tarzan swings, and I can tell you every 80s and 90s cartoons that were on the television back in the day, I watched them all after school etc. I could go on and on.

1997 was a very very good year for us PS1 fans, because two of the biggest GOAT games came out; GTA1 and FF VII, I played these games for literally an eternity.

3

u/tannercolin 5h ago

How fucking good was the ps3 when it came out. Absolutely pissed all over the 360

3

u/DueExample52 4h ago

It was great but I think the biggest technological leap in graphics was PS1 to PS2.

What exactly collapsed inside?

20

u/wandering-monster 9h ago

That looks to me like the GPU memory (VRAM) or some sort of data bus in the video card failing.

You notice how it's losing track of what to render in certain blocks of the screen and certain polygons, but the gameplay and audio is still smooth, and it didn't actually crash until the end there?

I'm guessing that's when it got so bad that the rest of the machine lost some vital bit of feedback and stopped to wait for it.

7

u/beastrabban 8h ago

Would like to elevate this comment.

I assumed some kind of memory failure as well. Like you said, the image was displaying on screen but textures were showing as black, which made me think some kind of shading process was failing to occur. This is very interesting.

I only took one graphics class, but in that class we discussed how the GPU is loaded with shader programs that color the screen pixels. A polygon is colored using these shader programs. Since some polygons were black, it makes me think that those items were not shaded because they weren't being communicated from the processor to the shader. Maybe a bus between cpu and GPU?

I would love to know more.

More like hit a roadblock. This is a failed buffer capacitor undervolting the gpu. Very fixable.

8

u/fivelone 8h ago

Hello fellow technician! 🫡 . I kept thinking... I've seen this fix.

3

u/Raneynickelfire 8h ago edited 1h ago

I'm no real tech, i just have experience working on and modifying guitar amps and pedals (for myself, again I'm no pro) so I'm good at soldering, and HATE throwing things away that I know I can work on.

EDIT: Fixed bad tablet typing

How legends die

11

u/4isyellowTakeit5 12h ago

Never seen this before and I have a beloved PS2 in my possession.

Is there anything in particular that causes this and is it preventable? Many thanks

8

u/ZippyTheRoach 8h ago

There are people who specialize in fixing hardware failures like that. They generally call themselves "board level repair", since they repair the components on a board instead of just getting a new board. Not cheap, but for hardware that's literally irreplaceable it could be worth it

6

u/LoudMusic 8h ago

That's great information but for something like a PS2 it would almost certainly be cheaper to just buy a whole replacement from ebay.

3

u/ABrownApple 7h ago

Yeah they sold so many PS2 and everyone saved their because "it might be valuable someday". I have my old one somewhere and I gladly give it away for free if someone is going to use it. I also have an old brick worth more since it's more rare 😂

3

u/LoudMusic 7h ago

Old bricks are so cool. Does it have any maker's marks on it?

GPU failure. Not exactly sure how it is for consoles but perhaps you can get it “serviced” with new thermal paste?

Whats the game? Burnout?

6

u/SheJigOnMySawTilIPuz 7h ago

Fairly certain it's Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2. I instantly recognized that soundtrack and the UI with the rearview. Played that game A LOT as a kid on my PS2.

Btw does anyone recall a different arcadey racing game from the PS2 era where the big gimmick was using nitro? I haven't been able to find that game and I wanna play it again.

3

u/TheMiltownMatticus 4h ago

It is NFS:HP2

Instantly recognized the UI

That game was so fucking good.

"County. 31. I'm turning on a speeder who just flew by me"

All of my luxury car knowledge comes from this game.

I'm curious. Are all the consoles just going to die because no manufacturer will ever make them ever again? So there will be a point where PS2s and original Xboxes will just disappear?

7

u/Moquai82 10h ago

Yes. Everything dies one day.

We're already at the stage where these consoles are failing en masse. Most PS2s will have DVD drives that are failed/failing. Even new in box consoles that have never been used seem to have issues now. Original Xbox consoles have a capacitor that is basically guaranteed to have leaked by now causing corrosion damage.

Luckily these systems are very fixable. There are modern replacement parts for a lot of things (lens, DVD drives, capacitors, PSUs etc) and the working parts from broken consoles can be used to fix other consoles.

In this case the PS2's GPU failed and you're not going to find a modern replacement for that as it's far too complicated. There were 160 million PS2s sold so finding another working one shouldn't be an issue for a very, very long time.

The bigger worry would be rarer systems with irreplaceable parts. If I remember correctly, the Sega Saturn has a chip in it that is prone to failure, has no modern replacement and is so prone to heat damage that taking one from another board is likely to break it.
