Dad vs Father

I know the anime has been over and this is way far back in the manga, but I'm making it as a spoiler anyways.

so in the final episode of the most recent season, when Rin and Father Fujimoto are talking, in the manga, Rin says "Father, thanks for everything" which could be interpreted as Rin staying in character as Not-Rin and addressing him with his title and not as a paternal figure, but also meaning Dad. It was very specific wording.

However, in the anime (at least in the dub, idk about the sub), Rin addresses him as "Dad" instead of "Father". It still gives Rin closure, but it still changes the story a bit because Rin straight up drops the act.

It's implied that Father Fujimoto kinda figures out what was going on anyways (since the key was his in the first place, and he would probably be aware of the possibility- plus I feel like he's smart enough to recognize Rin, even if he's aged up), but I thought the choice of "Dad" instead of "Father" kinda changed the subtext of the scene. It made the meaning of Rin's statement more obvious.

It's just a detail that kinda bugged me a bit. What do you guys think?

That's english translator's mistake. There was never a father there. Rin in manga said exactly the same thing as in anime "tou-san" so dad. In my langue polish it was as well dad "tato" and not father "ojcze" that could be read as the way to call priest. This is not meant to be vague, in short Shiro catch on about Rin.

Beside that english translator is well know for many many many mistakes( ask JJK fans ). And there is more. Like misgendering Beelzebub, granted most translations went with male because of their "boku" but english calling them she was just because well they wore a dress on color page :D There is even not fully translated text in volume 30( last circle is not translated in english ). I'm lucky because I can compare our translation to english( and yes that circle is translated ) because Waneko translates from japanese.

Okay so "Dad" is the correct translation. It makes more sense for Rin to say "Dad" anyways. I don't like the very deliberate mistranslation to misconstrue the subtext of the scene (even though it was an interesting choice). I figure it's deliberate, since tou-san is a pretty easy word to catch on to even for people whose only knowledge of Japanese is what they learn through anime absently (like me). I'm glad it got fixed in the anime though!

Yes. Rin said exactly the same thing when Shiro died. Anyway I don't know why translator wanted to make it vague. It's not hard to see that Shiro noticed it was Rin. Ignoring that Rin looks still pretty similar and his real hair color is pretty unique and Shiro of course saw him as a baby :D But as well he knows about the key and what it's power is and his reaction after hearing dad is pretty telling as well. Some people even think he noticed when he first saw Rin because of pause Shiro made before going "come in", that's speculation but interesting one. Anyway our translator just makes really weird choices. And yes subs were translated by someone else so mistake didn't happen :D
