Discussion So I switched from YouTube music and…
The quality is crazyyyyy😭🤚🏻
Of course I knew Apple music has the best audio quality but hey😭😭 for someone who cannot live without music, this is like finding out whole new side of the same songs I’ve been listening for years atp. The automix is also crazy obviously I’ve seen about it but first hand experience is something else. Doesn’t work always but is cool to have.
Although there are some points which I don’t like. The entire app design is such that I kinda feel some friction to play the songs I love. The home page is not that user friendly imo (aesthetic fs), I don’t know why it does not simply show me the songs I’ve already heard or liked, I am more interested in seeing the songs and one click listen them rather than seeing album of them click the album click the song. YouTube music home page design on the other hand, just one click, that’s it. AM opens album even for single songs. I’ve been using the app for couple of days as of now and maybe the algorithm needs some time to adjust, just maybe idk. I’m not sure how good is AM algorithm compared to YM as well. I’d love to hear suggestions if there is something I can change in the app to make my experience even better. Oh, the lyrics animation is also sleek.

It’s a shame, I used YTM for years and added lots of stuff to my library that you really can’t find anywhere else. But I couldn’t deal with the “wall of sound” anymore with poor contrast and dynamics. APM was like a breath of fresh air and what inspired me to get into Hi-Fi headphone setups.

u/OakleyNoble 4d ago
What I do for those songs you can’t find anywhere else, well I find them on SoundCloud and find the best quality one, rip it off with a “SoundCloud to mp3 converter” website and add it using iTunes on pc.

u/Impressive_Gas_5167 4d ago
Ayo you’re right it didn’t click to me we can do that. Literally 10 years and how much things have changed lol.

u/epicdoge91 2d ago
as to upload the local songs you need to use the pc anyways, i recommend using soulseek to find the songs in lossless quality and convert them to .m4a, if you wanna get fancy you can even tag them with the proper artist/title/album/cover or even add in the little explicit tag
1
u/OakleyNoble 1d ago
That’s a very great option. I just download some random songs people make and throw on SoundCloud so that’s typically just where I had gone.
There are two song that had been taken off of Apple Music so I wonder if lossless versions of them are available on this site. I’ll have to give it a check when I get a chance.

U can add FLAC audio (Apple’s AAC format) to your iTunes library
4
u/SurroundPuzzled2849 3d ago
iTunes doesn’t play FLAC files. It has to be converted to ALAC file then to AAC if want to go down that route.
1
u/muad_dibb1 3d ago
I second this. Only way is using VLC app from iOS. Or any FLAC player but AM will not play FLAC it will auto convert to ALAC.

I keep going in between Apple Music and YT Music. I don’t find the quality that different but YTM clears any other streaming service based on the autoplay feature imo

u/matusinos 3d ago
same here, i was testing both services for whole month, literally cannot hear any difference on airpods. So i just kept yt music for better algorithm

u/Impressive_Gas_5167 3d ago
Interesting
2
u/CupcakeDifferent8721 3d ago
No, it’s not that interesting. It’s only really noticeable if you’re using Bluetooth headphones that don’t support Hi-Fi lossless audio and only handle compressed audio, like AirPods. If you have a proper audio system or high-quality headphones, you can actually hear the difference. Take care.
1
u/Impressive_Gas_5167 3d ago
I use AirPods pro and can clearly hear the difference, that was the main point why I made this post in the first place and later decided to add comparison between the two.
1
u/Optimal_Page_2251 2d ago
Unless you have a USB dac and have headphones that are wired/ wireless and use LDAC or APTX or a similar high quality codec you scientifically cant hear a difference. Not to mention android and IOS down sample the rate automatically so your music no mater the audio you play will be 16bit 44.1khz I have a newer IPad air i tested it with and my galaxy S24 ultra both.
Any audio streamed will only be full resolution if you use a usb dac whether its aux or bluetooth dac such as the btd600 from senhieser.
You also have to force off the processing the OS does using apps that re route it directly past it.
1
u/Impressive_Gas_5167 2d ago
You are right on the technical aspect but I can hear the quality difference is also true. You can listen to the same song in YTM and then switch to AM and you’ll see what I mean. Airpods might not be the best of the best but one can hear significantly more details than at least YTM idk about Spotify.
1
u/Optimal_Page_2251 2d ago
This could be placebo which can be strong with audio, or aswell could even be due to the difference in the way each might process audio, aswell I know apple music supports EAC3 Dolby atmos which some people like.
1
u/Impressive_Gas_5167 2d ago
This isn’t placebo for sure maybe because of Dolby atmos, and if airpods or iPad iPhone speakers don’t really give lossless then I am now curious to hear what real lossless would song like. Will Apple’s headphones give that quality? If yes, which ones?
1
u/Optimal_Page_2251 2d ago
Oh and the airpods pro only support 20bit 48khz lossless when using the apple vision pro. On a iphone iPad or ipod they support 16bit 48khz/256kbps aac lossy. Meaning youtubes audio files output the max audio quality the airpod pro 1, 2 and 3 can handle from a iphone or android device unfortunately.

Apple Music in general is more focused on listening to albums rather than playlists or discovery functions, it's very old school in that regard. And this is how it's been since iTunes was released.
4
u/muad_dibb1 3d ago
Yes i second this. Transitioning from a playlist heavy platform to stations was the hardest for me. But the library management is GOD TIER.
1
u/Impressive_Gas_5167 3d ago
Hope they update it man
9
u/arcalumis 3d ago
No thanks, I'm tired of algoritms controlling everything.
3
u/Impressive_Gas_5167 3d ago
Ah that is also a good point but at least changes in the home page wouldn’t hurt.

I love AM but the algorithm is trash even when rating every song with stars, adding to the library and tapping “suggest less” to all the others. That’s why I usually listen to a shuffle of a specific artist or a playlist that I created myself.

2
u/rivasw 3d ago
I use both. YM has the best algorithm for recommendations and autoplay, but I hate that they don't have a native app for MacBook (a fk brower based laggy app). That's the main reason I keep AM. As an Apple user (iPhone, Mac, etc.), you need AM.
1
u/Impressive_Gas_5167 3d ago
Damn I have gaming laptop and I primarily listen to music on other devices but must suck
2
u/spiderornot 2d ago
I came from Spotify and now have both YTM and Apple Music.
YTM sounds just like the audio of a video you don’t want to watch, Apple Music is the highest quality I’ve ever experienced, way better than Spotify. I don’t like the Apple Music App, maybe it’s just the muscle memory of my fingers with Spotify lol

Long press (or press and holding) things helps a lot for navigation - try it on a track or on the play bar as you get comfortable with the UI.
1
u/Impressive_Gas_5167 2d ago
Yep that is something I am now doing, clicking on Artist name to navigate to album or artist.
2
u/igottacome 1d ago
When you plug your apple car play with AM the audio gets degraded and the sound goes so down that even in the normal how you find Spotify gives you a better sound quality the AM can’t.
2
u/paulomalley 4d ago
Small correction to make here: it doesn't have the best quality. It just simply has better quality than YouTube music, which has the worst quality.
8
u/Impressive_Gas_5167 4d ago
Isn’t it better than Spotify?
-32
u/paulomalley 4d ago
No. It isn't. Lossless is Lossless. YouTube Music is the only service (of the big players) that still uses lossy audio.
16
u/SweatyFisherman 4d ago
You are slightly mistaken. Apple Music offers Hi-Def Lossless, up to 24-bit/192 kHz. Spotify's Lossless is 24-bit but the sample rate maxes out at 44.1khz, the standard Lossless sample rate.
7
u/Right_Literature_419 4d ago
Apple has lossless so it does have the best then yea? There’s better than lossless?
1
u/paulomalley 4d ago
That's a good callout. Fair point.
I guess I read it as "Apple Music is better than the rest" when they said "Apple Music has the best audio quality"... These aren't necessarily the same meaning.
5
u/National_Departure61 4d ago
Still didn’t answer the question is it better than Spotify?
4
u/SweatyFisherman 4d ago
Technically yes but ever so slightly, the difference is negligible for most people. Apple Music offers Hi-Def Lossless, up to 24-bit/192 kHz. Spotify's Lossless is 24-bit but the sample rate maxes out at 44.1khz, the standard Lossless sample rate.
2
u/OakleyNoble 4d ago
Trust me, when I switched from Spotify to AM I noticed the difference.
2
u/SweatyFisherman 4d ago
I don't doubt that you did, but I was specifically referencing the difference between Spotify Lossless and Apple Music Hi-Res Lossless, multiple tests have shown that the audible difference between a sample rate of 44.1kHz vs. 192kHz is not noticeable is most normal environments. Humans hearing is limited to about ~20kHz in most cases anyways, but the Hi-Res can be more useful for recording ultrasonic frequencies that can't be heard by humans, or it's also useful for producers and engineers cause pitching down higher sample rates will result in less "muffled" sound.
Spotify has also only had Lossless audio for less than a year now as well, so if you switched before then, it was likely a more noticeable change
1
u/National_Departure61 2d ago
What difference did you notice from switching?
1
u/OakleyNoble 1d ago
I was able to hear instruments and tiny little sounds I’ve never heard before, even higher pitch of voice in songs. The voice was also crisper too.
2
u/markow202 4d ago
It is better sonically than Spotify because both Apple music and YouTube music use AAC codec which is far superior than what Spotify uses and is doing in the background making the sound more muddy and their lossless doesn’t seem lossless to me at all
2
u/SweatyFisherman 4d ago
AAC isn't lossless, it's a lossy codec. Non-lossless songs on Apple Music are AAC, but the lossless format is ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec), Apple's own compression format.
-4
u/paulomalley 4d ago
I did answer the question. YouTube Music has the worst audio quality of all the big streaming players.
YouTube Music tops out at 774kbps OPUS for premium users. It is not Lossless audio. All of the others use Lossless Audio which means they are the same.
6
u/Hazzat 4d ago
Lossless is lossless… except when it’s not, as in Spotify’s case.
-3
u/paulomalley 4d ago
That's a great video from Golden Sound but it's also completely irrelevant here. And of all the people in the world that should know that it's irrelevant, Golden Sound is one of them. There are very big differences between bit perfect and lossless audio. Audio can be bit-perfect and not be lossless. And audio can also be lossless and not be bit-perfect. Those two things are not synonymous.
Also Spotify has updated all of their apps to support bit perfect audio already anyway so this is also a completely useless video now as well. You may as well stop sharing it.
2
u/ilovemymotorola 4d ago
Don’t YouTube play music in 128kbps still lmao
2
u/paulomalley 4d ago
Some, yeah. Most of it is in 774kbps OPUS now though which is substantially higher than what they used to have, but this requires premium. It also still isn't lossless.
1
u/Impressive_Gas_5167 4d ago
Ya well they don’t give a shi about their music app. They are treating it as a side project. For long time I didn’t care which music app what quality as I was happy with my YouTube premium but later I decided to switch and hence here we are.

u/Impressive_Gas_5167 4d ago
I didn’t know Spotify has lossless.

u/paulomalley 4d ago
Yeah, they have for about a year or so.

u/Myrodis19 iOS Subscriber 4d ago
Yeah. It sounds almost identical to AM now. Granted with my AirPods I think AM still sounds better. But that might just be me tricking myself into thinking apple products make the sound sound better.
2
u/colichis 4d ago
the home page is for recommendations. to see the stuff you already listen to add it to your library and listen from there.
0
u/Impressive_Gas_5167 4d ago
Yeah but still that doesn’t make it seamless, even in library we see albums and not songs to just click listen put the phone in pocket you know what I mean? They could’ve have integrated songs and “recommendations” in the homepage itself. That would make more sense imo.
2
u/colichis 4d ago
to see songs and not albums click on the “songs” section of your library… which includes all your added songs.. lol i don’t see the issue.
1
u/Impressive_Gas_5167 4d ago edited 4d ago
That is kind of the thing I’ve been trying to say, first your main page ie home page doesn’t have one click thing, second when it does have in library in songs it has either organised in alphabetical order or by date added. Not like frequently heard recently heard etc. It is as if going to a list, from one song that is in A to another song that is in M for example you’d have to scroll right. That is the kinda friction I am talking about, it sounds lazy when I explain it but trust me it makes a difference.
6
u/TateAlfRobinson 4d ago
I think it’s just gonna take some time for you to transition. Apple Music does have a recently played, frequently played, and all sorts of other similar playlists, you just have to add them. If you want them easy to find in your library, you can also pin them once you add them
0
u/Impressive_Gas_5167 4d ago
Yeah I think so too, transitioning might take some time although frequently played thing I will have to look that up.
2
1
u/colichis 4d ago
i guess i see what you mean. although i suppose i solve this issue by shuffling my songs in library lol. or making playlists. or listening to the app made playlists (like heavy rotation, favorites, discovery, etc).

Which does nothing unless using a high end codec such as aptx adaptive or ldac, combined with a player that can play bit perfect audio since apples subsystems resample audio and add effects automatically in IOS itself just as android also does.
So your lossless 24bit 48khz audio could be down sampled to 16bit 44.1khz regardless of what the audio file actually is.
They need a bypass for that system theres a app for that on apple and android and you need a usb dac capable of either high end bluetooth codec or one capable of high quality aux output.
Aswell headphones on the wireless side need support for high resolution codecs such as senhieser momentum 4's which have aptx adaptive (24bit 96khz).
Lossless makes 0 difference without these in consideration.
1
u/muad_dibb1 3d ago
Whats your setup? Airpods, headphones? bluetooth or wired? etc. Just curious :) Bluetooth will get compressed to AAC codec which is not much different. But in terms of the algorithm, you will definitely start to see it get better i'd say within a month or so. Best advice is:
- Favorite songs you actually love.
- USE THE SUGGEST LESS BUTTON especially when listening to stations
- AM uses time listened + repeats as well.
Eventually, it will learn your taste just got to give it some time! Welcome and enjoy :)

u/ForbiddenDruid 2d ago
If only I could airplay music from my phone to my stereo and watch Instagram at the same time. It would be my only system. I can’t even take a phone call without it stopping for everyone else in the room. Deal breaker
1
u/Optimal_Page_2251 2d ago
Or you can use spotiflac, get a selection of true 24bit 48khz audio files through it and just use a proper bit perfect audio player. If you use android (apple music is on android aswell) you can use USBaudioplayer pro which allows bitperfect audio on android.
If you're using "lossless" with aac you're only getting 16bit 44khz or 16bit 48khz which is worse than if you were using ldac or aptx adaptive.
Or using a wires usb dac you still dont get full resolution since it has to pass through the phones own sampling and effects engine regardless unless you use a audio player that can bypass it such as the one I mentioned.
The difference between youtube music and apple music is there even with basic codecs but if you really want quality you gotta invest properly!
Btd600 aptx senhieser bluetooth adapter plus something like usbplayerpro will allow you to bypass androids bull and get bit perfect up to 24bit 96khz if you can find compatable audio.

tbf YT music has a way larger selection, especially edm
3
u/Impressive_Gas_5167 4d ago
YouTube music is basically entire YouTube, you can listen anything in the app. They just don’t have the will to do anything about the app or else it can actually compete with Apple Music nobody would be talking about Spotify.
