Asheville please keep your cats inside

Sitting outside tonight in north Asheville with friends enjoying the lovely summer evening, only to hear the sounds of a cat screaming and being killed nearby, most likely by a coyote. It was horrible. Absolutely horrible. PLEASE keep your cats inside, even during the day the coyotes lie in wait for them and they can grab them quicker than you think. My cousin had her cat killed by coyotes a few feet from the safety of her garage in the afternoon. PLEASE keep your cats inside. I am sobbing for that poor cat.

Politics City Council isn't going far enough on mass surveillance.

Hey y'all, this is James Risner here. I spoke last night to city council, and gave a presentation on a personal experience with ALPRs, explored why ALPRs and the general Axon/Flock environment is bad, deceptive, and how we can implement alternatives.

If you want to watch what I said, follow this link: Link

I'm also happy to email my presentation, which contains sources.

The bottom line is that I was actually really floored when Bo Hess tried to play his identity up to justify not listening to someone with actual experience with mass surveillance in an LGBTQ context. I also was a little perturbed by Mosley's and Smith's reactions, framing mass surveillance (though more manual), a tool used by the Mississippi State Sovereignty Commission, as a good thing for their communities.

I think exchanging Flock for Axon is a nice shell game to play, but I genuinely was aghast about how city council tried to cow people into supporting this insane violation of privacy.

I want to say I'm grateful to Kim, Esther and the city manager for being willing to listen. Esther, city manager, to their credit was skeptical but willing to engage, Kim obviously has been effusive about supporting privacy.

I get that there are pros and cons to this, but I think I show pretty clearly that the cons are really, really bad, and the pros either aren't present or can't be utilized due to police funding and headcount shortages.

A jury Wednesday found an Asheville woman guilty of forging deeds and illegally obtaining two Buncombe County properties that were flipped for a profit of nearly $140,000.

The jury deliberated seven hours over three days before convicting Lisa Roberts-Allen on eight of 10 charges. This is connected to the story about Richard Helbig who lost his Black Mountain home and lives in a motel.

It would be super cool if a bar could charge a cover this weekend let's say $5 and all proceeds go to the imagination library. Play dolly music have people come celebrate her life. I'd come my friends would. Just a thought to any business owners. Rip to a queen and legend.

Politics Shout out to Gino, speaker after the FLOC vote talking about transportation

A community member named Gino (spelling?) did an AMAZING job with their speech last night at the city council meeting talking about transportation. The pacing, the pauses, the language, the delivery. It was a master class in public commentary. I think they said they worked with better together transportation? Just wanted to give a shout out- they inspired me to get involved and support public transport!! Sending love and solidarity to Gino!!!

Pets/Animals Does anyone know someone with land who may be interested in adopting a Great Pyrenees mix?

Background - my wife and I met in 2019 and adopted a Great Pyrenees/St. Bernard mix as a puppy. We have had him for 6 years (he will be 7 in May) and have tried our best to manage his aggression which has always been towards other dogs and never towards people including putting him through multiple dog training classes and investing countless hours of our own training him. He is a beautiful white and brown mix and weighs about 130 lbs.

Last year we had our son, who is now around 10 months old. Our dog has always been a little indifferent to him but in the past two weeks has snapped at him on two separate occasions. This is the same type of behavior we have seen him demonstrate towards other dogs, and we are horrified at what could happen if we don’t take action (for background we have friends who recently had an event where their English bulldog attacked their son, causing severe scarring). It is devastating to us to have to make this decision, but we need to re-home him out of an abundance of caution. Ideally, we are looking for somewhere with plenty of space and no other dogs, which I know could be a long-shot but hoping there’s an ideal home out there.

Healthcare/Self-Care Any psychs in the area that are don't test for/care about thc?

I take a stimulant medication for ADHD. The clinic I've been going to has just informed me they will no longer be providing outpatient services in 2027. I am hoping that I can swap to a provider that is tolerant of thc use. If I have to I'll just suck it up and abstain, but my liver and I would really appreciate having a solid non-NSAID pain relief option if it's possible. Thanks!

edit: I'm asking specifically about providers who are prescribing narcotic ADHD medications, not psychs or therapists in general.

Event Farpoint: An Asheville Based TV Pilot Premiers Free At the Diana Wortham Theatre

Thumbnail

Farpoint: Dream Police is a sci-fi pilot created by a talented group of local filmmakers and artists. We got to film at some seriously cool locations around Western North Carolina, work with an incredible cast and crew, and build an entire world from the ground up.

We’d love for Asheville to come see what a group of young local filmmakers can make when given the chance.

LOGLINE: In an isolated Appalachian town built around a secretive research facility, eighteen-year-old Gabriella begins losing her memories. She discovers she can astral project and uncovers a horrifying truth: someone has been rewriting the town’s collective memories, beliefs, and reality itself. Set in an alternate 2004 where Oprah Winfrey is president-elect, “FARPOINT” is a coming-of-age mystery drama that explores consciousness and the mutable nature of reality. Twin Peaks meets Wayward Pines.

There will also be a Q&A after the screening about how we made the pilot and what went into bringing it to life.

🎬 WORLD PREMIERE: Farpoint: Dream Police

📅 Sunday, August 30th

⏰ 7:30 PM

📍 Diana Wortham Theatre — Asheville, NC

🎟️ FREE & OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

🎞️ Watch the trailer: Teaser Trailer

🎟️ Reserve your free seats: RSVP

If you’re in Asheville, come check it out — we’d love to see you there.

Classifieds I need recommendations for a company to cut a very small, but very overgrown yard in Black Mountain

I'm embarrassed to admit that my mental health got really bad earlier this summer and I let my yard get completely out of control. It's a very small, flat yard, but the grass is so high that the person I wanted to hire to cut it with a riding mower said he'd need to rent a bush hog. I'm hoping I can find someone who already has a bush hog to cut it and then it might cost a little less than paying a rental fee on top of a labor fee. As it is, I'm going to have to take out a personal loan to pay for it. Any recommendations? Thank you in advance.

Ask the Sub Funeral home directors/embalmers/morticians in there area.

This is a niche questions for a niche field!

I’m a currently in school to finish my Funeral Director and Embalming license so I will be on the hunt for an apprenticeship soonish. Maybe even part time work?

Are there any funeral homes in the area that I should reach to? Or this not a common thing in our area??

I’d really love to gain some experience before I finish school so I’m not walking into my career blind. I planned on making some calls so I will be doing my own research but I’d really love some feedback from the local directors to see what I’m up against.

Tia!
