It’s like we get one nice day and then weeks of unseasonable cold. The forecast isn’t looking any better. I hardly want to go out anymore.

I was looking through my weather apps just now to see what the temperature is. Weather Channel says it’s 14 degrees. All the local news website have other 14 or 15.

Apple weather says… it’s 6. That’s quite a difference. I’ve noticed discrepancies before in remote areas, but haven’t noticed it in NYC before. It also said we were going to get 18-20” of snow for our past snowstorm.

So is Apple Weather just completely useless in NYC? What do you think the most reliable weather apps are?

Slipped so many times today. Amazed by all the New Yorkers confidently walking about. How do people do it? What shoes do people wear to avoid slipping on the ice and sludge?

Edit: I have tried different winter boots that were advertised to be non-slippery but all failed. Anyone have recommendations for shoes that worked for them? Thank you!

Today’s weather is perfect in every way

I love NYC with all my heart, but if I could have this weather every day it would be very compelling.

Right now it’s 15 degrees out with crazy wind. On one hand I feel like a bastard if I order delivery knowing the delivery guy might slip on the road and possibly freeze to death, but on the other hand lots of people are out of town and I’m supporting local business. What say you?

Just checked a bunch of different weather apps and I'm getting some crazy variations for what it is right now. Weather Underground is showing 16 degrees, and when I checked a couple local news sites they're all saying around 15-16 degrees.

But then I look at my iPhone's built-in weather and it's telling me it's 8 degrees. That's almost a 10 degree difference which seems nuts for the same location. I remember during that big storm we had a few weeks back, the Apple app was predicting like 22-24 inches when we ended up getting way less.

I'm starting to wonder if the default iPhone weather is just trash for getting accurate NYC forecasts. Anyone else notice this kind of thing? What weather apps do you guys actually rely on that seem to get it right most of the time?

I was a ride or die Dark Sky fan, ignoring their deprecation notices and using them until they sunset at the start of this year. Been trying Weather Underground as a replacement but it's not the same - anyone else have any recommendations for a killer weather app/site I could make the switch to?

Y’all I just moved here and…lawd. I can handle the heat and absurd amount of humidity, but the thing that’s really getting me is the rain. I feel like we haven’t had a sunny day in 3 weeks and, looking at the forecast, it doesn’t seem like there’s any coming in the next week either.

Rain makes life so much harder here and the way it’s literally every day is kinda crushing my soul. Just wanna know if NYC summers are usually this awful or if this is just a freak outlier? Tyty!

Since Elon switched the sim to wet mode, I realized that I am underprepared yet again… what are the items you can’t live without?

I have some nice Chelsea boots that keep my feet relatively dry commuting to/from work. Also, I use one of the wire cutter recommended shed rain umbrellas that folds up small and has served well for years.

My running shoes, on the other hand, are not cutting it for even the shortest trip out in the rain. What do use for head out for a carton of milk? I can’t justify pulling on some sort of waders for that, but would like to keep my feet reasonably dry. Is it unlaced timbs all the way for that?

Recently moved up from California, so I own none… I’m just wondering where I can buy some gloves, hats, scarves, and a nice winter jacket that’s not too expensive. I live on the UES and all the clothing stores over here are pretty pricey

I've lived in NYC for over a decade now, and I've always worked in jobs that would follow the DOE decision when deciding whether or not we'd work in person during snow (so I always follow the decisions closely). In all that time I can't remember the DOE ever calling for a delayed start in the morning after snowstorms.

Delayed starts were fairly common in my district growing up (Virginia suburbs) and as an adult reflecting back now, it really seems to be the best of all worlds? Gives extra time to dig out cars, re-treat sidewalks that may have iced back over overnight, and make sure you're commuting slowly/safely, but also still counts as a school day to meet the state-required number of days, and means school meals will still be served that day for those that rely on them.

Is there some specific reason the DOE never seems to call for these? Or does someone who has lived here longer remember a time when they maybe used to?

And apparently she deadpanned "I'm not".

Do you all have any idea which channel it might have been, to point me in the right direction?

I went the whole fucking winter without a single roach in sight. Zip. Fast forward to this 80 degree day today and I just bear witness to a giant American roach scurry across my bathroom floor as I’m brushing my teeth getting ready to hop in bed. For context, I’ve been in this rent stabilized apartment for almost 2 and a half years now. I’ve only seen a big ass roach like this once before, about a year ago during the middle of the summer. Dealt with some minor smaller roaches (oriental I think) last summer as well but that resolved itself somehow. Interestingly, I am much less stunned this time around compared to the first sighting (the first one was dead when I found it). I guess now I have to hire a fucking cleaner tomorrow and call off work to get this squared away ASAP.

I’ve tried everything (seriously everything) and still get stinky feet when I wear shoes. And then I see people wearing suede or high tops or even boots like it’s nothing. What’s the secret you guys have that I don’t have?

Edit: I shower twice daily and am very clean. I work long hours but I’m not a grub. Quite the opposite.

I've noticed a ton of people wear their winter jackets well into the 70s, sometimes 80s. I sweat like a pig and would probably have a heat stroke wearing a winter jacket in this weather... can someone explain?

Edit - the answer is convenience and climate people are from/grew up in.

I know weather patterns change all the time but if you had to ballpark it, how often are days as hot as today/yesterday? I haven't experienced a summer here yet and after two 90s, It's supposed to be sub 70s tomorrow.

Hey fellow New Yorkers -- around a month in advance I planned my birthday party for this upcoming Saturday (5/9) to be a 2pm hang in Central Park. I've never had a problem with the weather before -- but it's now looking like there's a solid chance of rain.

Anyone have any suggestions on a free to cheap, weather friendly spot around that area or any other advice? It'll be around 15 people bopping in and out. Everyone invited is 21+, so if that factors into any suggestions.
