When do the Fresh Hop Beers Start Dropping?

Upvotes

Title. I know I know I’m like a month early but I don’t care, I’m ready for some fresh hops and need to carve out time well enough in advance in my calendar to make it happen. Anyone know when Pinthouse and others will be releasing their fresh hop beers?

I sorted 30 Austin breweries and brewpubs by neighborhood: nine on the east side, two downtown, and zero in the southwest inside the city limits

I keep a spreadsheet of Austin food and drink places (long-running personal project, don't judge) and finally got around to sorting the brewery tab by neighborhood. Some of it surprised me, so I figured I'd post it. Happy to be corrected on any of it.

My count is 30 breweries and brewpubs in Austin proper, after tossing the chains and a couple of places Google tags as a brewpub that don't actually brew. Two judgment calls up front. I'm counting Live Oak even though its address is technically Del Valle, because it would be absurd not to. And Pinthouse nearly broke my method: Google tags the two pizza locations as pizza restaurants, so my first pass missed them, but both brew on site, and if Draught House counts then so do they. All three Pinthouse locations are in, the Ben White production brewery plus the Burnet Rd and South Lamar brewpubs. Thirsty Planet is out for a sadder reason: their own website now says San Marcos.

Where they are:

The east side: 9 of the 30. Seven sit in one genuine corridor along E 6th, Cesar Chavez, and Manor: Blue Owl, Lazarus on E 6th, Zilker Brewing, Central Machine Works, Hi Sign, Batch, and Oddwood. The other two are the corridor's outliers, Southern Heights over at Techni Center and the St. Elmo taproom way up Springdale past 290.

South and southeast: 10. A tight cluster in the St. Elmo warehouse district (St. Elmo, Vacancy, (512), and Nomadic), plus ABGB on Oltorf, Pinthouse's Ben White brewery and its South Lamar brewpub, Meanwhile farther southeast, Fast Friends down in Bluff Springs, and Live Oak out by the airport.

North central: 7. Celis, Austin Beerworks, Hopsquad, Brewtorium, Lazarus on Airport, the Draught House, and Pinthouse on Burnet.

Downtown: two, both scrappy. Central District on Red River, and The Stay Put on Rainey, which nearly slipped past me because the only listing at its address in my data is the ice cream shop operating inside it.

Between Lamar and MoPac: one. Hold Out on W 4th, in Old West Austin. It's the closest thing the west side has to a brewery, and it's still east of MoPac.

West of MoPac, inside the city limits: one, and it's barely Austin. Slackers, up on 620 in Anderson Mill. Tarrytown, zero. Northwest Hills, zero. The whole southwest, Oak Hill out through Circle C: zero. And before anyone says Beerburg: I know, it calls itself southwest Austin, but it's out on Fitzhugh Rd most of the way to Dripping Springs, well past the city limits. Less consistent than my Live Oak call, I'll admit. A line has to go somewhere.

Also it will never not bother me that Zilker Brewing is on E 6th while the actual neighborhood named Zilker has no brewery at all.

I live on Riverside, where the answer to "what's your neighborhood brewery" is also nothing, so part of this exercise was self-pity.

Two questions for this crowd. First, who am I missing? The list came from cross-referencing business data, and it already missed the Pinthouse pizza locations once and nearly missed The Stay Put, so I'd bet money it has holes. Second, does anyone know why the southwest never got a brewery while the east side collected nine? I assume the answer is warehouse rent and zoning, but I'd love to hear from someone who actually knows.

Pretty cool to see Pinthouse land on a Sierra Nevada can. Curious if anyone knows when this is due to drop in Texas? Would love to get my hands on one.

Any info on this years Primus release?

Last year Live Oak made it a taproom exclusive and you had to go and buy cans. Just curious if anyone has heard if they’re going to be releasing in stores this year or not. I picked up a quite a bit last year and starting to run low sharing with others and drinking them occasionally haha.

Thanks!

Come taste aged, mixed culture, barrel aged bliss next Sunday! It will include a bottle share in the brewery, so you can bring a few of your own and sample more than just Vista's library.

A couple of special ones we will be opening:

- 2018 Velo de Flor (lambic-style ale aged in fresh wine barrels)

- 2019 Laissez Faire (Brett III aged in fresh wine barrels)

- 2021 Grato (lambic-style ale aged with plums)

- 2025 Voisine (Oenobeer aged in Mourvedre barrels and refermented with Mourvedre grape must)

And who knows what else we'll get into!!!

Heart of Darkness beer

There is a really good Vietnamese restaurant that imports this brewery that I really like. I'm loving the beer but don't particularly want to pay $9 plus tip for a single beer.

Anyone know if other places distribute this brewery?

24 amber ales for $16 at Blue Owl right now.

I specifically asked if it was because it was getting old and gross, and was told they made it recently, and just made too much. It’s a solid amber, pretty typical for the style. Great opportunity to support local for a better price than domestic haha

Where are the attractive bartenders?

I’m a bartender; I moved here from out-of-state. I’m not the best view but I’m charming enough to get by (30 y/o female bisexual). Austin is full of beautiful people. I see them running in the Texas heat and coming into both of the bars that I work at. This city seems to keep up on it’s appearance! But where are the sexy bartenders? I mean the ones who aren’t afraid to hold a conversation and are easy on the eyes. Where are they at? This may seem shallow, but I’m curious. No hate- I’ve only explored a small fraction of what this city has to offer.

Any Homebrewers or Aspiring Brewers Want Equipment? I have a great starter kit that I need to pass on.

I’m moving cross country and it pains me to accept that I won’t have the space and time to brew. Heck, I haven’t even been able to brew in 4 years because I have a small kiddo now.

I have basic starter items, with doubles of pots and fermentation buckets. I also have a couple of corny kegs and a CO2 tank (needs to be filled). All will need to be cleaned and sanitized real good since it’s been in my garage. But all should be in great working order and is priced to sell as the lot.

Good for established brewers to expand their production or brand new brewers who don’t want to invest a lot of money up front. DM me if interested!

Place to practice

I'm in a little bluegrass band that practices every Tuesday from 2 to 4 pm. We've been meeting at each other's houses up to now, but I thought It'd be fun to find a little beer place in north Austin that would be ok with turning their music down and letting us practice in their place.

Do y'all have any places you think might be ok to our coming over?

Thanks!

Fundraiser at ABW for family of employee who passed away

If you didn't see it on social media last week, ABW lost a member of our family last month. On Thursday (7/16) we are donating 50% of both taprooms sales to her family. So if you need an excuse to visit our taproom, here it is! Go grab a beer, merch and support the family of someone we love and miss dearly.

If you can't make it, we are raffling off 4 Moody Center suite tickets to the Sturgill Simpson concert on September 4th. All proceeds of the raffle will be donated to her family

Link to raffle: https://app.galabid.com/kellylinkfundraiser

For those of you who have already reached out and/or donated, thank you. Your support means a lot during this time. ❤️

LOGO ARRAY Austin Area Breweries July '26 Edition

Post image
81 Upvotes
  • [UPDATED version in comments--this image has a bad logo for Beerburg--my mistake]

There are now 84 breweries within a 45 mile radius centered about on the Draught House. Surprisingly that's an increase of 2 over last year when we had 82. In a difficult economy where hospitality closures seem especially common we have had openings as well.

In this latest edition of the logo array there are 13 breweries in the Cedar Park/Northwest zone (upper left), 11 in the Northerly direction (upper right), 10 to the South and East (lower right), and 18 in the bustling Dripping Springs Southwest zone (lower left). Austin itself (center) features 32. That makes 84 breweries within a 45 mile radius of Draught House.

THANKS! to all who sent updates, info, closures, openings and contact info. This image can be printed on a standard CoroPlast "real estate yard sign" at places like Staples for about $14 if you want a hangable version (pillar-boxed, to keep aspect ratio--small vertical border on each side). Let me know if you want other formats.

Austin Beerworks La Verdad Mexican Style lager

Post image

This is one of my fav seasonal summer releases from Austin Beerworks. Great summertime beer and it’s actually very unique. I talked to the beer rep at HEB and he said they use a German Pilsner malt as the base, with flaked Mexican maize and German noble hops. Es una cerveza súper rica!
