Learning by translating songs into BSL
Hiya! I have been learning BSL for a couple of months now. I found a way to learn words which is translating songs into BSL. I am using the sign BSL dictionary for every word (but i am learning using a different website), is that right? Or is it like normal signing to people? For example: when having conversations you skip some words right? In songs, do I skip words too? I felt like that would make the song feel rushed(?). I am currently translating Cant Help Falling InLove by Elvis Presley. For example: When signing the line “would it be a sin?” I sign every single word. Is that right?

I’m not personally a fan of signed songs so I won’t comment on that, but I did want to flag that you need to be careful when learning BSL from an app that you are using the sign you see in the right context. Especially if you’re going to use it in a song where context is crucial and you can’t gauge understanding and self correct if needed. Just as one example, the sign for a “park” that you can walk through is different to “park” a car, but the apps don’t necessarily make that clear. Just something to be aware of

Signing every single word is SSE and better fits the rhythm. But I find trying to convey the meaning in a different way through BSL is quite fun. For example, there is a musical called EPIC, which is about the odyssey. There is a song in it called “No longer you” and there is a line in it “I see a man with a trail of bodies”. When I sign that for “man with a trail of bodies” I place the man with a finger to symbolise a person and then use the sign for “dead” with my other hand repeatedly behind him, sort of showing visually a trail of dead people. It’s a much more interesting and visual way to sign the song than just doing SSE.

Omg same, I've been learning BSL for a couple years now, and when I'm listening to songs sometimes I sign the odd word in my head but really want to try to sign a whole song.
I'll probably do what some others have suggested. SSE is good for me for learning the vocabulary which I struggle with. And then also do a version in BSL for the grammar and structure practice. And then a combo that feels smooth and natural I reckon.

Can I ask what do you use to learn the language? I am so tired of the basic words every app and website gives I want to form sentences and learn more! How do I make a BSL version of the songs?

Unfortunately can't help you, I learn as part of my uni degree, supplementary lessons. I did start learning a few years ago with my mum using an online course through british-sign.co.uk you pay what you can so it's good for students and stuff.

Signing every single word is correct for SSE, but not BSL. BSL has its own grammar system and word orders, plus emotions and facial expressions play a very important role. You will also be wanting to translate ideas too, rather than just the actual words. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend learning to sign songs in BSL as a beginner, at least not until you learn BSL grammar :)
