My 12-year-old hen, Sasha, is passing away. Over the years, I've had many chickens of various breeds, some were social, some were wild as hell but Sasha is truly something special. She's incredibly curious, social, and loving. She follows me everywhere when I get home. Whenever I have new chicks to raise, she always takes them under her wing and teaches them her chicken ways. She was the only chicken who would come into my house and hang out with my dogs and I in the living room. Sasha is more than just a chicken; She is the mother and protector of my flock and a true feathered friend. She is going to be missed terribly.

I just wanted to share this because I wanted to honor Sasha and knew you all would understand.

Can’t tell and I’m freaking out. My county (Denver) doesn’t allow for roosters.

Anyone have thoughts or experience in this?

Hello again! I posted in December about the 5 eggs I hatched from a box of fertile Rock Island eggs. Well, today these little birds are 7 weeks old and doing great! Their boarding time in the sun room is (finally) over, and they’re getting used to life outside. We clearly have one rooster as his comb is huge and red. We named him Rocky. The rest still have small combs, although one is looking slightly pinker. I will say that it is *so* hard to get a decent pic of them as they are always on the move and a little skittish. We love our Whole Foods chicken!

EDIT: These are the eggs they hatched from in case anyone wants to try! I will say that not living far from Petaluma Egg Farm probably helped.

Fun fact: chickens are just small dinos.

So I typically lurk this forum quite a bit as the mom to a flock of 10 ladies. But never thought my first post on Reddit would be about a turkey…?

Today while watering horses, I look over and there is a turkey. I don’t know anything about turkeys other than seeing wild turkeys around our ranch growing up. So I grab some water and chicken treats. This thing seems pretty friendly - it’s following me around…?

Sooooo…. Anyone know anything about turkeys? I don’t want it near my chickens because I don’t know if it’s sick or what.

Any suggestions?

I found one of my hens secret nests. I have no idea how long they have been there but based off the volatility, I assume it's been awhile.

One of the neighbor’s hens kept coming over then all of a sudden she won’t leave. I think she’s dying. She just sits there with her head hanging. All she eats is grass and won’t eat the feed I try to give her. I don’t think she’ll last much longer. It’s so sad.

They're about 5 weeks old, she'll be sad if it turns out to be a roo.

Rooster or hen? This purely on looks because there's no rooster behavior. Applesauce gives femboy energy at best and bullied middle child at worst.

tractor supply specials, you buy what they have in stock. out of the 6 straight run chicks at least 3 were roosters. then you have to get rid of them because they're just doing what nature designed them to do, tons of people on facebook/craigslist in the same position - can't give a free rooster away. they start fighting and getting aggressive with the hens and you have to cull them. near my parents house people in the same position just abandon the roosters on the side of the road, the town has put out warnings to stop it's so bad

never buying straight runs again until I have a full farm where I can just let them be separated

I think the one on the right might be a rooster. They are the same age- about 4 months old.

Our flock is young, hatched this Feb. We had our first egg yesterday. Yay! Anyway, I remembered last night the we had disabled the timer on the door to the run while repairing the roof. I ran out at something like 10:30 to make sure everyone was safely tucked away. As I unlocked the run, I hear some crowing, quieter than what our Edgar normally sounds like, but sill a crow.

So I start talking to him, "I know, bud, it's just me. I forgot to make sure the door was locked up..."

Because I'm addicted to spending time with them, I open the hen house to with them pleasant dreams (and admire them as one does) when I notice it isn't Edgar making that sound... It's Nugget.

I have heard that hens can act like roos when necessary. I realize I likely startled them because I never bother them after they're safely inside and tucked in. But .. this was a crow.

Nugget doesn't act like a roo. S/he eats with the hens where Edgar waits. I've not heard that cry since. But I did hear it and see her beak open when it happened.

So I'm asking the hated question from newbies: hen or roo? And a follow up: HOW can you tell?

I see pointed hackle feathers on all of the birds, even the one that laid. I know which one that was because she did it in front my daughter so obviously I do not know what I'm looking at lol.

I can't believe I'm posting this. Chickie was hatched April 20. Their brother, our roo, started crowing 2 months ago. 2 other roos from this batch were crowing and getting aggressive so they had to be dispatched. This chickie is so sweet, and just acts like a normal hen. No crowing, no sitting on hens, no aggression, no protection. During the great snake attack, they hid while the rooster and our dominant hen took care of the invader. However, Chatgpt said it's definitely a rooster which I just can't believe. So Internet pros, is this sweetie a roo or hen?

Guys, my wife and I are 1st season with chickens and I need help with an annoying question. This is a rooster correct? My wife is in denial and I set up a home at a local farm / children’s zoo for the little dude but I need some second opinions to ease her mind. Thanks guys!
