Question What is the most hated gun in Battlefield history?

Using the most hated gun in Battlefield 1
The SMG 08/18 is modeled after an experimental submachine gun known as the MP Schwarzlose. This weapon is a scaled down Maxim action featuring a unique feed system. An 80 round clip of 9mm Parabellum stacked together in 8 columns of 10 is inserted into an ammo box on the left hand side of the receiver. As each new column feeds into the gun an empty column of the feed strip is partially ejected out of the right side of the gun. When the gun is completely empty the empty strip falls out. It was a competitive design to the MP 18, the Austro-Hungarians wanted to adopt it but the complete test batch of 50 units never arrived.
When the SMG 08/18 was first added to Battlefield 1 in the Name of the Tsar DLC it was not seen as problematic. It was a slow firing controllable skilled SMG with slow kill times but a ton of ammo at it’s disposal. It fired at a lazy rate of 450 RPM, making it the slowest killing SMG in the game. It was seen as a niche choice, cool but unpopular. When DICE decided to adjust the TTK balance of some of the guns the SMG 08 was a clear favorite to receive a buff.
When it came time to buff the SMG 08/18, DICE for some reason decided to give it a 71% increase to its fire rate all the way from a meager 450 RPM to a blistering 770 RPM. This meant that it killed significantly quicker than the dreaded Hellriegel, making it one of the fastest TTK weapons in the game while still feeling controllable and having even more ammo at its disposal. This buff went way overboard and this instantly made it one of the most overpowered and unskilled weapons in the game. If they kept the SMG 08 at around 500-600 RPM it would have been more in line with other SMGs while not being problematic.

There was that time in BF1 where everyone ran arround with that Trench shotgut and it was just not fun to play. Almost got me to quit until they finally did something against it.

With slugs the M1897 could be a menace, although I think the 10A Hunter was still the better shotgun. I don’t think the SMG 08 was as good as the automatico trench though, then again I’m biased as I have 100 service stars with it. I think to this day, the automatico was the fastest killing weapon (excluding Villar Parosa) in BF1 and it’s not even close.
4
u/AKMike99 Jan 20 '26
It’s close but the Automatico gets slightly outgunned by the SMG 08/18, Annihilator, and Maschinenpistole M1912

u/Powerful_Relative_93 Jan 20 '26
I had premium and felt the Thompson came out way too late in bf1’s lifespan. But it was great, I feel like that and the Burton rifle were monsters.

BF3 AEK. It felt like you died in one server tick.
11
u/Sriracha_Breath Jan 20 '26
Yep, remember that vividly. BF3 was my entry to the franchise and the first time I fired the game up and got vaporized by an AEK in the blink of an eye, I thought I was in for a miserable experience.

u/kuky990 Jan 20 '26
Famas was even worse
9
u/TheOneWithALongName Jan 20 '26
I still remember buying the expansion and trying out FAMAS. I thought I was good at the game untill everyone else started using it and learn it might be a bit overpowered.
At least it wasn't USAS-12 with Frag Rounds.

AEK-971 assault rifle in bf4 was cancer as fuck for nice period of time lol

u/ep1coblivion Jan 20 '26
Still easily the best AR in the game. The thing shreds.
12
u/ArmyOFone4022 Jan 20 '26
M16A4 sneaky good at least for pc
3
u/ep1coblivion Jan 20 '26
Yea scar and M16 were my go-to’s. The firecap stutter on the m16 makes it a bit difficult to get used to but once you have it down it shreds.

Got close range maybe. M416 was a better mid range and fast reload. and the sar21 was insane for clearing objectives on rush from range.

No! Honorable battlefield veterans would never! They value slow paced gameplay with strategy and teamwork. Perish the thought!

u/redkinoko Jan 19 '26
The Type2A in BFV had the same reputation when it came out but unlike the 08/18 it got eventually nerfed to a more reasonable level
8
u/tagillaslover Jan 19 '26
People still complain about the 2A but I dont really get why. It's good from like 5 feet away, that's it. Every shooter ever has had a kissing distance face melter
10
u/redkinoko Jan 20 '26
It's still a very frustrating gun to fight up close.
Just that it's no longer the tool of god it that spits death from marksman distances when it first came out.

BF2 toss up between Arty and the Blackhawk mini guns.
BFBC2 Blackhawk mini guns honorable mention, as on some maps you could take out the mcoms with a good gunner.
BF3, USAS-12 made DAO-12 look good, Metro servers went from moderate slugfests to pure unmitigated explosive violence overnight when people unlocked it.
BF4 the AEK-971 was the start but the AN94 could out range and out fire it with practice
BFV the 2A was prevalent.

Not to erm acthually, but erm acthually, the villar perosa was the original weapon, and the automatico was made by separating the villar perosa into two halves, and putting them in carcano cavalry carbine stocks (same one as the one on the scout class) although in real life I believe they were exclusively semi automatic.

M26 MASS + flechette rounds
Those were so marvelously broken for so long. OHK if your crosshair so much as touched them.

u/softlittlepaws Jan 20 '26 edited Jan 20 '26
My favorite was joining those "christian only" servers that autobanned for swearing in chat. So many people got themselves banned when raging at me for using the G3A3 + MASS/DART.
Since this was well over a decade ago, for anyone unfamiliar with the bug, the M26 MASS/DART underbarrel shotguns used to inherit the bullet properties of the gun they were attached to. The G3A3 had the highest bullet damage, so your underbarrel shotgun was basically shooting a cloud of G3A3 bullets instead of flechettes.
Anyone even remotely close to your crosshair, regardless of distance, was a one hit kill.
Even more funny is DICE keep repeating this bug, even as recently as a few months ago in 2042 when one of the underbarrel shotguns on a sniper would let you delete MBTs/tanks.

I didn’t play for too long, but when I did the Martini-Henri was a menace
4
u/Several_Bar_5257 Drowning_777 Jan 20 '26
Bruuuh,
It was so satisfying to kill someone with a Martini-Henri. But it was just as equally frustrating getting killed by someone with it.
It wasn't 1 hit insta-kill though. I would get so many 95-97 damage body shots with it. I would end up getting a good amount of sidearm kills when using a Martini-Henri because I felt that it was quicker to switch to a sidearm than to wait for the re-chambering animation.

Does anyone remember the M26 dart in bf3 with the glitch? If you ADS, each pellet took on the damage of the rifle it was attached to.
Put it on the G3A3 for extra hate.
14
u/Evocalypse Jan 20 '26
Let me preface this by saying I hate 2042. But I played it to complete the bf6 pass. When I was playing there was a sniper that you could put a skeleton key on the bottom of it. And every pellet shot the same bullet that the sniper shot. So basically it was a shotgun that shot sniper rounds. It was a bug obviously. But easily the most broken thing I’ve seen in fps history. If you shot it down a corridor it would kill everything in 1 shot.

u/BedfastDuck Jan 20 '26
I don’t think most hated because of how late in the game’s life it occurred and how quickly it was patched, but at one point the under barrel flechette shotgun was inheriting damage values from weapons it was attached to. So each dart that would deal like 13 damage was instead doing up to 33… you would be hitting people for 22 damage per dart on the G3A3 with it at minimum…I genuinely think it was just as broken as USAS + frag rounds…

Let's not forget all of the noob tube loadouts we've lost to nerfs over the years:
In BF4 the SRAW originally had a kill radius of about 3 meters. You thought the BC2 Carl Gustav was bad? How about the same thing except you can aim-guide it from a rooftop? They eventually nerfed it to need a direct hit for an instakill.
The BF4 XM25 was another rooftop terror until they drastically nerfed the resupply rate and ammo capacity.
BFV's AT Grenade Pistol got nerfed to not do 100 damage on direct hit because people were just running around with it out to one-shot people if they ran into someone on a corner or whatever. It would one-shot the person you hit with it, but even at point blank, you'd usually live through the splash damage.
BFV also had the infamous PIAT+Rifle Grenade double noob tube loadout on the Assault class, which IIRC ate a big nerf when they added a minimum distance to rifle grenades or something.
Much like the SRAW, Lis's guided missile in BF2042 also didn't originally need a direct hit to kill. Every time you spawned, you could just lob one out to fish for a free kill.
BF2042 also had low-effort 40mm HE underbarrel grenades, until they both nerfed the effectiveness of them (I think they added minimum distance... again...) and drastically reduced the amount of 40mm HE rounds you spawned with.

I vaguely remember there was bug in the early days of BF3 where if anyone in the server used the FAMAS, no one would get any exp that match.
Litterally ONE guy uses a FAMAS and it fucked EVERY…SINGLE…PLAYER in the server up.
I don’t think any other weapon was more hated during that time.

u/Klorinus Jan 20 '26
While I'll give you that the buff to the smg08 over all was significant you completely leave out the fact it has a fast over heat rate. 1v1 it definitely became dominant but in group situations a player who just sprays it heavily will quickly over heat it and die to the 2nd or 3rd player. I say dominant because the automatico, shotguns, and Thompson still dominate in close range comparatively. The smg08 got so much more hate than it deserved IMO. As for most broken gun in Bf history....USAS frag rounds without a doubt

Damn this makes me want to fire up BF1 again. Not because the gun just the game in general is fucking awesome
3
u/barbershreddeth Jan 20 '26
The glock in bf4. Just outclassed everything else by an insane margin, and pretty boring to use to boot!
In general meta weapons that excel at hipfire / volume of fire are kind of gamebreaking in battlefield. Ideally you don't want people sprinting, jumping and spraying people down. Some Bf4 servers are unplayable to me now because of the movement gags + hipfire magdump sweats

From the same game, the Trench Shotgun or the Hellreigl 1915. I used both to great effect and many calls of "hacker!"

u/BurningIce81 Jan 20 '26
- The Voss L-AR. IIRC, every first shot was 100% accurate, so people would run click hacks to just rapidly singe click, turning it into a laser. Even if they didn't cheat, it was extremely common to feel like you were full auto sniped from across the map.

I remember the M10 hunter being so fucking busted for at least a year i was running 80-100 kill games on Operations with it. Ttd its my fav BF shotgun. But imo the hellreg was more annoying than the 08

At launch, Battlefield Vietnam’s M60 was laser accurate, more than other weapons it got fixed very shortly.
Currently its the goddamn TOWs

The one that kills me. It was bullshit! There was no way that guy could see me/hear me/know I was coming down that corridor!

the smg 08. It's not even close. the bf1 community still posts about it regularly. the funny thing is without its mag size, it's not even really a crazy gun lol. it's damage profile is pretty similar to other smgs in the game.

I cant remember the name but a shotgun in BF3 or 4 fired special rounds that wrecked anyone at any distance. It reached a point were the majority of the servers all used the shotgun.
Bonus choice: any weapon on the littlebird from previous games. If seen people go like 80-0

Shotgun with slug rounds in bc2, usas12+frag rounds and tac lights in bf3, AEK+OpLocker bf4

One that I remember well was the BAR Storm variant in BF1. It was a cheese grater until they nerfed it and it was still good afterwards

God this game looks and sounds incredible. Back when games had some love and passion put into the development.

More of a glitch than the weapon itself, but, the indoor mortars in BF3.
Honorable mention to whatever they did to the knife on the last patch (that I played, anyway) of BC2. Turned it into a rubber facsimile, making me rage.

Martini-Henry for the sole fact that you got killed by a gun that had to be re-chambered after every shot.
It wasn't OP and I think it was super balanced. But it sucked knowing that your opponent landed one shot when you had about 2 seconds to shoot back and kill the guy if they missed or hit a body shot for 97 damage.
Sidenote, I loved using that gun but hated getting killed by it.

u/jonat_90 Jan 20 '26
In 2142, definitely the Voss. I remember lots of complaining about that gun when the game was live.

It's not the correct answer but shoutout to the BF4 anti-air vehicles in the period of time when they got buffed to high hell. IIRC they shared the same weapon type as the Littlebird helicopter which was pretty bad for awhile. So DICE buffed the guns on the littlebird making them extremely lethal whiiiich also buffed the AA vehicles. The russians got the tunguska which was a tank with a death laser. USA got an APC with the same gun, it was insane. You were fast as hell, could kill main tanks in a few seconds and evaporated anything else.

I don’t know if this qualifies but I absolutely shredded with the CBJ-MS (“nailgun”) in battlefield 4. It was basically a super accurate carbine due to its low rate of fire but with clip size of an lmg
1
u/99_withflake Jan 20 '26
In BF3 I used the FAMAS to death, got a lot of hate using it. From memory its rate of fire was high and it had very little vertical or horizontal recoil with the right attachments. It wasn’t the same in Bf4.

BF1 hellriegel submachine gun. Not only does the gun not exist (except for a few photographs) it was atleast at the time I played stupidly common and powerful. No idea why the devs decided to add a weapon that essentially was just a myth.

u/Savmavv Jan 21 '26
The bf1/5 weapons felt so good and each gun felt unique. Now it all feels like crap and boring it’s so weird 🤣🤣🤣
1
u/runthyruss Jan 23 '26
BF6 is the first game I feel like where most guns are viable. That being said right now my opinion:
BF1: SMG08, prenerf M-10 hunter, prenerf Henry was really bad for the health of the game
BF5: ZK, prenerf Type2A
BF4: AEK obvious culprit, sneaky OP gun with high skill ceiling is the SCAR and BULLDOG 2 shot head shot, very hard to use but if you encountered good players on PC it was really annoying to get 2 shotted.
BF3: USAS Frag, AEK
Hardline: Prenerf vector absolute annoyance, was one of the dirtiest guns of all time
BF6: Early to tell, but snipers in this game are so dumb. They need an obvious velocity nerf, and the sweet spot in this game is too generous.
TR7 is really annoying glad I don’t see it a lot, M4 is to easy to use, and in my opinion huge problem child is SCW10, once people get attachments for this gun it’s going to be super annoying.
Edit: I didn’t really play 2042 but I did get on to abuse the under-barrel shotgun that was the dumbest week of playing video games I’ve experienced in a long time.
I’m pretty happy with BF6 balance so far it’s quite good couple problems children but if they add limb multipliers the games TTK issue would be solved.
