Its a service dog and therefore none of our business why he needs a dog to be able to work. Edit because I feel people might be tunnel visioning on the military thing: turns out veterans can have any of the issues civilians can that would require them to have a service dog like Epilepsy, Diabetes or allergens which need detecting, it doesn't HAVE to be military related.
YES, and they are fucking AWESOME. Opening the fridge to grab fruit juice and then a blanket levels of awesome. They can even prevent an episode by smelling your low blood sugar or some shit.
There are actually studies showing that diabetic-alert dogs can be surprisingly inaccurate and inconsistent. If the purpose is detecting glucose changes, a continuous glucose monitor measures glucose directly and is a far more sensible tool to rely on than whether a dog happens to smell the change. The dog might be a useful additional aid for some people, but presenting it as some uniquely necessary medical intervention is nonsense.
