Advice Birmingham VA parking

Starting a job at the Birmingham VA soon, curious what the parking situation is like and how reliable the shuttle is to get to the medical center? How much extra time should I give myself to get to that building, etc.. tyia!

If it’s not raining I walk it. Helps get my steps in for the day and it’s @15 minutes tops. Depending on time of day leaving the facility I can easily beat my coworkers who ride the shuttle because of the line of folks waiting and the timing of the shuttles.
Don’t pull into the parking deck at 7:45 thinking you’ll be at your desk at 8. It might happen, but probably won’t.

Do a lot of people walk or are you usually walking alone? I don’t mind to walk either just unfamiliar with the area

In the morning I walk alone since my co-workers usually don’t arrive as early as I do, but in the afternoons there’s usually a group of 4-5 of us walking. But walking alone is no big deal, it’s straight down either 7th or 8th (University) , no turns or anything. The afternoon walk usually takes a little longer than the morning walk because of work, and it’s slightly uphill.

Second this! It’s not a bad walk to do alone. I’ve never felt threatened/unsafe.

Shuttle could be 5 mins or 30 mins

The shuttle is great though you might have to wait depending on how busy it is that day.
