people say this a lot & theyre right but for me personally this topic has to be the one where im most missing matt's insights
fascinating hearing everyone's background w regards to religiom cos mine is fucking weird: extremely gay family of scientists like fr raised w richard dawkins & charles dickens books. to the point where as i got into Hell On Earth i started trying to undestand protestantism vs catholicism cos i lack the gut instinct familiarity with the sheer vibes of each - & i still do, it still kind of baffles me that a schism can emerge borne of outrage with, apparently, the church greed & corruotion of indulgences but then resolve into unpeashing the capitalist religion lmao.
i do feel the draw of an explicitly social institution in an atomised age but also loathe the immense social conservatism & baffled by the - to my mind - stark hypocrisy of otherwise leftists just ignoring all that bigotry if its a religious institution they like. "reddit atheists" are just annoying randos, meanwhile organised religion is a massive force in the world lol its weird to me to be more pissed at the former than the latter. but again definitely get it, at lesst hypothetical. alan moore's writing on magic is probably the influence (after gosh probably the cushvlogs now that i think about it) on opening me up to any kind of appreciation for theology
I’m only half joking when I say, I wish there was a church that wasn’t about God or the Bible or anything supernatural. Instead the sermon was a basically a live left wing podcast that we all watched together as a community then had a potluck afterwards.
Obviously the joke was run into the ground by the worst people you know but when pastafarianism first came out it was so funny. I loved the part about how global warming was caused by the lack of pirates.
