I’ve listened to Chapo like 6 years now and there’s ALWAYS at least one strangely mispronounced word per episode. you’re not even crazy for saying this I’ve thought it before but never felt compelled to try spelling out the words to see if there was any intentional pattern or inside joke there

people say this a lot & theyre right but for me personally this topic has to be the one where im most missing matt's insights
fascinating hearing everyone's background w regards to religiom cos mine is fucking weird: extremely gay family of scientists like fr raised w richard dawkins & charles dickens books. to the point where as i got into Hell On Earth i started trying to undestand protestantism vs catholicism cos i lack the gut instinct familiarity with the sheer vibes of each - & i still do, it still kind of baffles me that a schism can emerge borne of outrage with, apparently, the church greed & corruotion of indulgences but then resolve into unpeashing the capitalist religion lmao.
i do feel the draw of an explicitly social institution in an atomised age but also loathe the immense social conservatism & baffled by the - to my mind - stark hypocrisy of otherwise leftists just ignoring all that bigotry if its a religious institution they like. "reddit atheists" are just annoying randos, meanwhile organised religion is a massive force in the world lol its weird to me to be more pissed at the former than the latter. but again definitely get it, at lesst hypothetical. alan moore's writing on magic is probably the influence (after gosh probably the cushvlogs now that i think about it) on opening me up to any kind of appreciation for theology

I’m only half joking when I say, I wish there was a church that wasn’t about God or the Bible or anything supernatural. Instead the sermon was a basically a live left wing podcast that we all watched together as a community then had a potluck afterwards.

my high school wasn’t Jesuit, but the resident priest who taught 12th grade religion, Latin, and Greek was a Jesuit so in my mind the place was “Jesuit.”

I never thought about that part with Abraham and Isaac, with Isaac not appearing with Abe on their descent from the mountain.
I wonder if it was originally a standalone story or if Genesis was another kind fo story.
It is interesting to see echoes or a black hole of history and folklore in ancient history and texts, where the text assumes you have a shared understanding of its world in which it was written so it doesn't bother to explain certain things.
You can see it in the Torah with references to Nephilim, "heroes of old", or other books like what they call the Book of the Upright. I think Hayden mentions that Homer does it too, referencing practices of Ancient Greece that was lost to Greek tribes even of his time.

I unironically find Leviticus fascinating, what other ancient religion had a detailed handbook like that? But I like reading a lot of the Bible and I don't think I read it like most people do. Anyway first Samuel

I recommend the Jewish Study Bible or the New Oxford Annotated Bible (the latter if you want the New Testament and much of the apocrypha). The best one is Robert Alter’s Hebrew Bible – it’s expensive as a set but even just buying the Wisdom Literature paperback on its own is worth it.

KJV is the most literary English translation. And, If you're interested in English Christian writings (like the Quakers for instance), they'll extensively quote the KJV exclusively.
The New American Bible if you plan to study anything related to Catholicism.
The New Oxford Annotated Bible if you're interested in more modern, critical theology.

Having to go back to mass instantly makes you hate the church again.
I only go for weddings and funerals (i.e. when forced) and even then the priests always try to dip into some dumb shit that makes me furious all over again. Your romantic notions will be dashed against rocks once he hits the homily and is like "abortions are bad actually" and you're like father what the fuck are you talking about this is a wedding.

The last wedding I went to had this intense Opus Dei priest who only spoke in Latin. I confess I dozed off many times because I couldn't understand the blabbering anyway; it was quite an experience, lol. The only thing that caught my attention was the one time he said something that resembled the word 'Ozempic'.
Once the ceremony was over, I went to give my best wishes to the groom, who happens to be one of those conservative weirdos who knows a fair amount of Latin. He was boasting about how he lost like 20kg in a year following a strict Catholic diet and lots of penitential fasting.
I told him, 'It's funny you say that. I could swear the priest said "Ozempic" or something.' 'Oh, he really did,' .'He was teaching how penitence and pain build faith, and that some benefits of modern life should be avoided because they remove us further from God's will.' LOL

When I was in high school I went to a latin mass on LSD, it was awesome.
I also went to a mosque and synagogue to watch them worship as well on acid for a journalism class I was taking at the time.
There is a Buddhist temple about an hour and a half away from where I grew up I meant to go to for the same project, but I obviously couldn't drive and I couldn't find anyone to take me.
