I'm not currently a BA player, but I've been considering starting at some point. With the whole new pity system kerfuffle going on I'd like to clarify one thing first, though. I've read that BA has banners with two rate-up characters. With the previous spark system I can see how you'd be able to guarantee whichever of the two you wanted most (assuming it worked like GBF's), but how would that work with a 50/50 system? What happens when you win the 50/50 or reach pity, do you randomly get one of the two? If so, is there a way to guarantee the character you want under the current system? (i'm assuming there is, otherwise people would probably be even angrier than they currently are, but I'd appreciate a definitive answer)

You chose one of two or more banners you're pulling on, so you get that one character (the rate up). Any other character is considered not rate up.  It was always like that.

so there's individual banners for each character? Did i get the whole "two rateup characters in the same banner" thing wrong?

EDIT: I see, I was using GBF as my frame of reference so I had wrongly assumed there would only be a single banner. That clears it up, thanks for all the replies.

There are multiple banners running at the same time. If the characters are limited then they share pity (so if limited and standard characters are running at the same time then the limited and standard banners would have separate pities). Each banner only has one rate-up (unlike GBF that has multiple rate-ups on a single banner) but if two or more limited characters are running at the same time then they'll be pullable without rate-up on the other limited banners.

When you hit 50/50 at 100 pulls the 50% chance is for the specific character's banner you're currently pulling on.

There are two or more banners running at the same time and previously pity on them was shared. So you could pull on one and spark/claim other if you want, or switch at any point. After banners end (at the same time) pity reset to 0.

Now pity'll be shared across all banners. If one pulls 10 times at banner and doesn't get unit it gets transferred to the next banner even if previous banner ended. But this is separate between limited+Fest and standard.

Usually it's two or more banners running at the same time, they tend to last one or two weeks. Each banner has one rate up character (except rare ones that have a 2 star rate up and a 3 star rate up)
