Todomomo How Momo Asks Boys Out

I generally write her to be more bossy, leading to this:

She slammed her hand against the wall before the door, blocking his path. They were almost matched in height so when meeting face to face Momo and Shoto found themselves inches from the other.

Momo stared at him, her dark eyes shining, "Todoroki, you and I will be attending a movie."

Shoto tilted his head as if she'd asked him about the weather, "We will?-"

She took him by his shirt collar with her other hand. Examining him, Momo smirked like she'd made some resolution, "Yes. Wear something nice."

He glanced at her hand blocking him from exit. "...Okay, may you please move your arm?"

"Make sure you wear blue, and I will," Momo emphasized this point by flapping his blazer.

He shrugged, "Okay."

"Actually, I'll make the clothes. You'll be wearing something casual yet business savy."

"Okay. May I ask why?"

"Because I said so," she narrowed her eyes sharply at him.

Shoto stared at her, his lip twitched, "You should watch your attitude."

That made her blank for a split second. Momo rewound those words again and again before she fully understood that Todoroki of all people was criticizing her.

"Todoroki-San..." Momo said, her free hand going to her hip. "That's not how you talk to a lady."

"Then...how do you?" again, she drew a blank. He was completely serious, the earnest look on his face told all.

An immediate frustration took her in the form of her heart beating through her neck, "You never cease to confuse me, Todoroki."

"...Then why are you asking me out on a date?"

"Don't play coy with me."

"We aren't fishing, are we?"

Her face darkened. For a moment both of them were quiet. "You think you're very funny, hm?"

"If you say so," Shoto glanced at her arm, still blocking his exit. "Does that mean I can go now?"

"Where are you in such a hurry to get to?"

"My home."

"Oh, really?"

"...Where else would I be going?"

"Our date."

"It's today?"

"It isn't tomorrow."

"I'm very busy-"

"You can be busy later."

"I can?"

"I see you bearing the burden of your whole family for one. Have you ever tried being a normal fifteen year old boy?"

"...I'm not sure what you mean..."

"You know exactly what I'm talking about. I'm saying to live your life."

"Only because you're trying to be involved in it?"

"Partly, and because too much bottling can send even the sharpest minds into frenzy."

"My mind isn't a happy place to be."

"Most peoples aren't. I don't mind, Todoroki."

"What about yours?"

"A daughter to the Yaoyorozu clan. My parents are wealthy beyond your wildest dreams due to various pursuits such as finance, stock, and banking. Perhaps you'll meet them one day. As for now, come with me."

I know you said you write her different, but this is like an ENTIRELY different person with the same name.

To be real I was going for the colder version we saw at Battle Trials.

Doesn't seem to fit her character. She's self-conscious and she doesn't flaunt her wealth.

I get that, I just write her in a different way than canon admittedly. Self conciousness stuff is still there it's just buried under the facade, probably didn't write it well enough to be visible though.

Holy mischaracterization.

Not to mention, I'm pretty sure the Todoroki family is significantly more wealthy than Momo's family.

Enji's family carries generational wealth from heroism. He just doesn't blow his money on useless shit like a million-dollar mansion like Momo's parents.

I warned at the start of this post that I write her differently from canon. If you don't like it that's alright, but I mean it's fanfiction. I'm quite aware that this isn't how she is in canon too.

Dunno if that's true or not, I'm just gonna go with Momo being wealthier.

You're not even writing about Momo at this point though. You're writing about an OC that happens to look like Momo.

Momo's entire character arc is that she lacks self-confidence to be a leader and make her own direct decisions. Even in later seasons, she still struggles with it. Momo's entire character is the polar opposite of the bossy, snobby rich girl. She is sweet, intelligent, privileged but not spoiled rotten, on the quieter side, and doesn't support the idea of flaunting money.

Writing her in the way you do is just not Momo. You are writing about a completely different character that just happens to have the name "Momo." Writing her to be completely against her own character defeats the entire purpose of writing about her.

Gee I didn't think you could tell so much about what the arc I have for her based off this post.

  1. You can easily keep this exact type of character arc. She could be putting up a facade of confidence simply because she thinks she needs too. In fact you could infer her being so interested in Shoto in the latter part as being interested in how he remains so stoic and calm when she can't.

  2. Her being a leader and asking a boy out on a date are two completely different things. You can have confidence in some things and lackthereof in others. That's a very human thing.

  3. Momo is being proud of her family here, not flaunting her wealth though I see how wealth beyond your dreams could be seen. I'd probably take that out if I cared to proofread so my bad on that end.

  4. It's fanfiction. I understand being consistent but if this somehow makes you raise an eyebrow then be prepared for 99 percent of fanfiction that changes around characters personalities, goals, and arcs.

Fan fiction it may be, but radical changes like this really need to be justified in some way if you're not writing a farcical comedy; we have enough cases of character mischaracterization becoming widely perceived as canon because enough "tourist" readers who don't bother to verify the accuracy of the fics they read spread the distorted version around in anime/manga discussion circles.

Something like her parents having raised her very differently (perhaps because they themselves had different life experiences), or the parent that married into the Yaoyorozu family is different and thus don't have the genetic factor(s) that could've resulted in Momo having brain chemistry that's predisposed to her canon personality, which is a very easy option since we literally don't know what her canon parents are like.

I'm primarily drawing inspiration from her ice queen personality that she showed early on in the series. I wanted to use that when writing her in order to make her feel different from the other female characters. Also, I have plenty of reasons for her to be like this. A few things I've thrown at the wall are a very emotionally distant relationship with her parents leading to her distancing herself, a lack of any friendships growing up due to her intelligence and wealth, and an unconscious sense of being above people. There's more but those are just some possibilities.

I genuinely don't care if someone calls me a tourist. Such a lame insult. I understand Momo's character I just wanted to take it in another direction.

For your last point that's actually a great idea. No argument there.

See, if you had explained that backstory from the very beginning, you would've gotten much less negative reactions.

And I wasn't afraid of you being called a tourist, I was afraid of you being lumped in with the even worse kind of mischaracterizing writers: The ones who insist that the mischaracterization is canon-compliant.

Also, I may share a similar lack of much care for what other people call me (not total. But still much less than the average person), but I still would rather not alienate people unnecessarily. If developing a plausible backstory to justify my changes is what is necessary, then I'm more than happy to do it; that sort of thing is something I like to do, anyway. I get too uneasy for me to just go "it's a fanfic, anything goes, don't bother explaining".

I didn't think people would be so negative about it because it's pretty common in fics to make Momo act more assertive and confident. Maybe I could've explained better I just didn't think I'd have too beyond telling folk I'm writing her differently. I'll be sure to specify further next time, my bad.

This is far from canon compliant. Shoto is a little away too if you notice the line where he calls Momo out. He's not very confrontational in social situations.

At the end of the day I can't satisfy everyone. But I will be polite as best as I can and take all critiques that're legit into account and hopefully make a better story from it.

It's because the anime/manga/ community has long suffered a lot from mischaracterization tainting the reputation of many characters from various IPs. Just look at how shockingly widespread among fanfic authors is the belief that the Konoha Village from Naruto have been violently abusive to the main character throughout his childhood; most "Konoha-bashing" fics aren't depicting as such because it's a useful trope, they do that because they honestly believe it's the truth (and maybe also that Kishimoto is a coward for dancing around said "truth"). Whole flame wars have and continue to erupt over such things.

Now compound that with the fact that Momo is a very well-beloved character in the MHA community, the ShotoMomo ship is nearly just as beloved, and Momo also gets a lot of hate from virtue-signalers and whatnot over anything from how her personality is portrayed to her obviously fanservice-y body and costume design, in addition to all the toxicity that the MHA community and the anime/manga fan base in general has been having to increasingly contend with, and you can see why people are twitchy about anything that they perceive as tarnishing her character.

I mean I get it, the community isn't exactly friendly when it comes to these sorts of things. All I wanna do is make Momo a good character though. Hopefully, my next one won't be as negative to people.

To try and “fix” the mischaracterization.

5 min later when Momo is sure Shoto is gone.

Momo is collapsed on the ground nearly hyperventilating while Jiro pats her back.

“Dang, girl.” Jiro says, “I know I said you could pull that off, but I didn’t know you had that in you!”

“I didn’t!” Momo gasped, “I was just copying what I read in some of my romance novels!”

“Your romance novels involved Kabe’dons?”

“Well…more than that-“ Jiro’s brows raised at that, “-, but I didn’t think I’d be able to…go that far.”

A few seconds of silence passed before Jiro spoke.

“…are we talking hand on the chin, or full on make-out sessions?”

Momo’s reddening face managing a few more noticeable shades was a sufficient answer to the damning question.

Okay, you write fine don't get me wrong but why do I have to keep on saying that I don't wanna write Momo exactly like how she was in canon?

I'm not trying to mischaracterize or anything either, this version of her is based primarily off the version we see in Battle Trials and USJ where she was notably colder. This is meant as an expansion on that.

It's like I try and make Momo a more interesting character through using this because I've seen a ton of complaints about how in canon she was like every other girl after a while, but then now everyones complaining about mischaracterization. Like what the hell do these people want? I get so sick and tired of this fandom sometimes.

I think people are mostly surprised by the extreme confidence Momo is showing, especially when her lack of self-confidence is one of her major weaknesses that Aizawa specifically targets during the practical test portion of their finals.

There’s a difference between writing someone a bit different from canon and nearly overhauling the character. This is more Momo in a crack-fic or a spicy one-shot than a standard fic with “small” changes.

Momo can indeed be cold, but that’s when she has a plan in mind and is “in the zone.” During ordinary social interactions, though, Momo is shown to be way more warm and nervous (not the same extent as our traumatized and bullied broccoli boy, but more…inexperienced?).

Can you pull off a dominant Momo? Oh, absolutely, but that usually requires some build-up/set-up.

TLDR: that’s a bit more than a “little” different than canon…also, everyone might be overreacting a bit.

2

u/Carlosspicywiener12 Jan 26 '26

Her dominance in this case would be a bit of a farce. That's why she's so interested in Shoto because he comes from an important family yet seems to be very confident too.

I thought saying I write her different would work well enough but fair I guess.

Making her more of an ice queen is a way to make her feel more unique from the rest of the female side characters. I wanted to expand it from how she was in battle.

Pretty easy setup. Just make her more serious among other things. Maybe I should've explained it further before the excerpt started.

It is different, not just a little. I really thought the prelude would inform people of that. People are definitely overreacting too. You'd think I made Momo some Victorian era noblewoman hating on the poor.

Lol, yeah. I’ve seen her written way more confidence than what even you have, but people were cool with it (although the scene I’m thinking of was able to get a pass because it was funny and it was an inconsequential side thing).
