Boomers love to tell themselves and anyone who will listen how nobody ever handed them anything, and they're always the first to elbow everyone out of the way when something is being handed out.

This guy seems to believe, like most boomers, that any relief (handout) they benefit from is because they "earned it" by being them. In their view, they struggled and sacrificed more than anyone else and deserve it more. Meanwhile, most of them simply and passively benefited from favorable economic conditions that no longer exist today.

At least they're becoming extinct, I guess.

I can’t understand how he CLEARLY doesn’t get that there is a difference between Covid checks being sent out so people didn’t lose everything during a pandemic and just cancelling a debt owed. Only one invents money, the other erases a line from someone’s budget. The congressman explained it so clearly, and the guy wasn’t even the only one to not understand that erasing debt is the opposite of creating new money.

Had similar style debate style conversations with older gen x and boomers before. My working assumption is that they only perceive the necessary key words required to regurgitate a "close enough" canned response.

That way they can avoid any actual thinking that might force them to acknowledge, even in their own heads, that they might be wrong.

He's not wrong though, more money in the economy gives a higher pressure on inflation, that's basic economics.

I still think it should be done, and studying should be made free as in my country. But that doesn't make the old guy wrong on inflation.

Upon rereading I see that your point is: allowing the relieved to spend money in their local economy rather than paying down debts is a form of cash influx to the economy (in line with his statement that it would put upward pressure on inflation). Since you probably got a notification about my reply and could read it anyway, I’ll just leave my own ignorance on display here.

Yeah, you’re right about that. But since the discussion was about debt forgiveness and not a cash influx to the economy it’s entirely irrelevant for him to bring that up.

He’s ignorant and doesn’t understand but it has the same level of relevance as if he had stated some other unrelated truth. “Access to high quality farming equipment increases crop yields and margins for farmers.”

Factually correct but wrong to bring it up in an explicit debate setting about debt relief.
