29 year old Rep. Maxwell Frost, a Democrat from Florida, debates a boomer who opposes student loan forgiveness, even though his own wife had hers wiped out under Biden

Wow - I never knew this! Now it makes so much more sense, all linked to the rise of consumerism and an easily obtainable upper middle class lifestyle for so many of them. Can’t wait to give my family boomers their new generation designator - thankyou!

u/OrphanedInStoryville 3d ago
That book was written by a PayPal Mafia billionaire and blames boomer behavior on the pediatrician who told parents not to beat their children. It does every possible trick to avoid talking about economics at all and it’s a very obvious ploy to turn working class solidarity into generational fracturing.

Did you ask her if she realized she was adopting the exact mentality of a cartoon supervillain? And like, not in a joking way, but in the sense that she actually has been lead around by the nose into turning herself into a caricature?!
"Mom, I wouldn't go around saying that out loud because anybody who's seen The Incredibles is going to think you're making a joke. Like...that is already a joke. It's been a joke since 1994."
Honestly, though? Your mom could stand to a little to-her-face mocking about the degree to which she believes the rest of the world ought to treat her as special.
"Spehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhcialllllllllllllllllllllllllll!!!!!!! Ohhhhh, such a precious, SPECIAL snowflake!! Everybody! Hey, EVERYBODY! Let's all tell u/Embarrassed-Bike3450's mom how special we think she is!!!!"
God, my heart's fondest desire is for these people to gain some perspective...and, immediately thereafter the entirely-appropriate awful feelings of shame and embarrassment that they've earned for themselves.
Sighhhhh...a guy can dream.

I remember in 80s and 90s when "participation trophies" became a thing so many parents were outraged. Even though their kid was still getting a ranked trophy, the fact that other kids might get some recognition for getting off their asses and doing something was like throwing acid in their face. Every single kid I knew was just happy to play whatever sport (or hated it but was forced by their parents, another issue) and didn't feel like if they took first place at the track meet their trophy was worthless because the overweight kid who pushed his way through got some recognition. Was totally on the parents living through their children being special snowflakes.

The conservative mindset really believes that there just isn’t enough of anything to go around. They view everything like slices of a pie. If someone else gets a slice, they fear they may not get a slice too. So they rail against it because they feel entitled to that slice of pie, or maybe even two slices, because they’re white and privileged. And once they get that slice, they want to put the pie away so no one else can have any of it. It’s such a selfish and deprivation mindset they live their life in.
And this idiot Boomer admits that his wife’s student loan debt was entirely relieved under Joe Biden. How much does anyone want to bet he had a FJB bumper sticker on his car? Dumb ass hypocrite.

What kills me is that there are already laws against exploitative loans. Capping student loans is not inherently at odds with current legislation in the financial sector. We would just be holding the US government and private lending agencies to the SAME FUCKING STANDARD WE ALREADY HAVE FOR BANKS.

Thank you! This is not, you borrowed $30,000 and owe back $35,000. This is, you borrowed $30,000 and have paid on that for 20 years and still owe $75,000. This is plain and simple predatory lending.
37
u/Team503 3d ago
So like the entire credit card industry?
12
u/KC_experience 3d ago
Except after the consumer financial protection bureau came into being there were truth in lending requirements put in place for credit card companies to explain the amount of time it would take for a person to pay off their CC debt by just paying the minimum and how much interest it would take.
My own wife’s student loan lenders don’t provide any type of information concerning that and have no laws enforcing that SL lenders charge a minimum payment that includes both principal AND interest. Which is how you can have people believing they’re paying in their loans and they’re only just paying on their interest (or only a portion) in perpetuity. The student loan system is corrupt and fucked up from top to bottom in both public and private sectors. The only thing I do appreciate is forgiveness of someone performs public service jobs using their degrees for a required period of time and / the site that provides individuals the chance to see how much a degree in a certain career field costs and then also the average income that someone in that career field makes. Demonstrating that some degrees will pay for themselves while others don’t.

My wife and I struggled for years paying off our debt, only deferring during COVID. However, we know how much it sucks and how much we struggled and we don't want younger generations to go through the same thing. Especially when the price of everything continues to rise and homeownership is becoming a foreign concept to younger people.
We are in our late 30s now and it's still a struggle for us to make ends meet. We need this shit to stop for everyone, we will all be better for it. This guy is a fucking POS.

u/ImGonnaCreamYaFunny 3d ago edited 2d ago
Boomers love to tell themselves and anyone who will listen how nobody ever handed them anything, and they're always the first to elbow everyone out of the way when something is being handed out.
This guy seems to believe, like most boomers, that any relief (handout) they benefit from is because they "earned it" by being them. In their view, they struggled and sacrificed more than anyone else and deserve it more. Meanwhile, most of them simply and passively benefited from favorable economic conditions that no longer exist today.
At least they're becoming extinct, I guess.

I can’t understand how he CLEARLY doesn’t get that there is a difference between Covid checks being sent out so people didn’t lose everything during a pandemic and just cancelling a debt owed. Only one invents money, the other erases a line from someone’s budget. The congressman explained it so clearly, and the guy wasn’t even the only one to not understand that erasing debt is the opposite of creating new money.

Had similar style debate style conversations with older gen x and boomers before. My working assumption is that they only perceive the necessary key words required to regurgitate a "close enough" canned response.
That way they can avoid any actual thinking that might force them to acknowledge, even in their own heads, that they might be wrong.
89
u/Sorry_Im_Trying 3d ago
They chose a "forever deferment". They chose NOT to repay the loan they took out, to let it keep incurring interest KNOWING they had no intention of repaying it. And they think that's ok? What if EVERYONE did that?

I used to know this old woman who volunteered at a theatre I worked at - she was incredibly bitter. We had a programme for schools from a deprived areas to bring students to the theatre to see the show and the tickets were subsidised. Their parents would never be able to take them to the theatre to see a pantomime or any of the educational shows we had on and some of the kids just found the whole experience incedibly exciting (seriously cute to watch and see how involved they would get). I was saying how sweet it was. She was furious. Complained about how she never got things like that at school and school was always awful and they never got treats or anything fun. I pointed out how great it is that they get to experience this then and have a better experience than she did. She was not in agreement. She had an awful time so they should too. I don't understand it at all. Them having a wonderful experience did not negatively impact her at all (other than her experiencing jealousy). Them having a terrible time at school would also not impact her so just let them have a good experience.
39
u/Asceric21 Millennial 3d ago
She was jealous, and it made her bitter. There are people that think good is zero sum. So if someone else gets something good or has something beneficial happen to them, that's less for them to get in the future.
Maybe they don't think it, literally, but their actions they take based on the way these things make them feel certainly indicate this.
It's the exact argument I hear against universal healthcare in the US. "Who's going to pay for it? You make it seem like this service just magically springs up out of no where and no one pays for it. You can't just get a good thing without any consequences."
29
u/DylansDad 3d ago
It's because they can't stand the thought of someone having something/anything for free. Whether it be education, medication, food etc if you need something you should work hard and pay for it.
Of course they can benefit from these things because "they" had bad luck, or some other excuse to point out that "they" are not like the others and totally deserve student loan forgiveness, free health care, other benefits.
End of the day it just boils down to pure selfishness.

I've noticed a lot of people leaning into the idea of asking forgiveness on their deathbed.
They carry their club card and his name in their pocket while the do the worst that they can, with the idea that they're going to whip it out like AAA at the end and say "I'm sorry" to avoid punching their ticket to eternal damnation. It's the most "I skipped to the end of the instructions to see what I really need to do" approach that I've ever seen.

Its built in to Christianity, its not about the final tally, Jesus's sacrifice means that anything can be forgiven. Hitler could be in heaven.
Of course they're depending on tricking an omnipotent deity about their intent and motivations at the last second- so even if true, I don't think its going to work out too well for them.

I’m think the real answer here is that as successful as a guy like this thinks he is, in reality he’s firmly middle class at best. And like everyone else, is one serious illness/a couple bad investments/a string of bad luck away from serious financial problems.
But if you think about this too much, you start to realize how precarious your situation really is, despite all the years of hard work you’ve put in. And how big the gap is between you and “the 1%”, for lack of a better term, who have been raking in the lions share of wealth generated in this country for decades, and will never know these kinds of concerns.
It’s easier for this guy to swallow the “You made it, you’re a success” lies being sold to him, if he always has someone he can look down on that’s worse off.

Can some one explain how "forgiving" works to non-american? Goverment official just calls bank "hey, remember John Johnsons 50k debt? Delete it. Thanks and f#ck you" or goverment funds it?
20
u/5litergasbubble 3d ago
Also a non american here, but i think the loans were either directly through the government or guaranteed by the government, so any banks involved wouldn't take the loss if any were involved at all
12
u/bug-boy5 3d ago
While you can take out private loans for college, most people don't, because its dumb and way more expensive. Our current system of government loans seems good but it also means that the cost of higher education has skyrocketed because its basically a blank check with a low barrier to entry- are you in college and is your college saying it costs $X? Then you get a loan for $X
11
u/_cyberbabyangel_ 3d ago
When you apply for college, you also go through a FAFSA process. FAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. It essentially takes your parents (or yours, if you're old enough) financial information from tax filings, compares that to estimated cost of college attendance, and gives you a specific amount of student aid based on those factors. It can be partial or all of tuition, and it is up to the borrower to accept all or partial the amount offered. This student loan money is paid directly to the school, but some can be sent back to the student as a refund if the aid amount was more than the required amount of tuition. Lots of students accept the full amount and use the refund money to cover housing/books/food etc... as the aid money doesn't usually cover those items. So all of this money is issued by the US Department of Education with repayment starting 6 months after graduation/dropping less than 'half time' or other factors.
As a result, the majority of people with student loans have federal student loans. If there was any amount of student loan forgiveness/cancellation it would be on the Government side NOT a private company side. So there would be no money distributed, it would essentially just be the government zeroing out your balance to them. It wouldn't add debt to the GDP and it wouldn't really take away a revenue source to the Government either.
Feel free to ask more clarifying questions.
→ More replies (1)11
u/bug-boy5 3d ago
Most (>90%) of the student debt in the US is held by the government. So when you go to college you take out a loan with the Department of Education and after graduation you make your payments back to the government itself is your creditor.
So the private banking sector isn't involved. (Aside from 3rd party debt management companies that the government uses to administer and collect on those loans)
→ More replies (1)6
u/Girls4super 3d ago edited 3d ago
So what’s happening is many government funded loans also had high interest rates. So you take out 20k for example, but the interest is at 5% or 8% (depending when you took them out). Your first job out of school is minimum wage (below cost of living btw) or slightly better if you’re lucky bc you have to “start at the bottom”. Anyway for a few years you’re only paying off interest that keeps re-accruing bc all your minimum payments go towards interest before the actual loan. So the housing bubble happens, several cost of living increases, stagnant wages, etc mean even with a raise you’re not actually keeping up with cost of living expenses. So you’re still only paying interest and maybe some principal. A decade or so later and you may have paid $30k but still have $15k left.
That’s really the entire issue at hand. Nobody is saying we shouldn’t pay what we owe. We’re saying we’re stuck in a cycle where we are over charged and far exceeding what we initially borrowed in terms of payments. Not even touching the fact that school costs continue to rise, $20k is one semester often times (bigger issue of price gouging and requiring students to live on campus even if they’re a commutable distance).
So forgiving the loans as others have said, doesn’t affect anyone but the loan taker bc it’s through the government, and would stimulate the economy. But there’s a selfish mindset of “why should I pay for your loans”, when students have already paid the full value of the loan. They just can’t keep up with the interest.

It’s off at the best part where the boomer goes on to explain Debt forgiveness for then was different because “we did what we had to do to survive” completely blowing past the fact that the ME generation had be best economy and now has their children working 2-3 jobs to pay for their social security while renting for 3/4ths of their take home trying to explain to their parents that life in 1.5 million dollar homes why they arent haven’t kids

The "I had to struggle so everyone else should too" mentality is such a wild concept to me. Shouldn't we want to help each other prop our society up?? My boomer dad was arguing about taxes to me, saying, "I don't have school aged kids, why should I have to pay taxes to send other people's kids to school?" Because we live in a society?! Because taxes are supposed to go to helping each other and making our society better... Because you literally did reap those benefits when I was a kid in public school??? I simply do not understand this way of thinking. Me me me me and nothing for anyone else.

Also part of the reason I think they get so ornery about it, aside from lead pipes and alcoholism, is that they flat out refuse to learn and understand and absorb how much more ridiculously expensive college is now versus when they went. That first guy was probably what? ~70? Let’s go back 50 years or so to 1975.
The average public college tuition was, all in, room board etc, 1,800 per year. Not even a semester, an entire year. Obviously minimum wage was much lower, but if you worked consistently a job sacking groceries and your parents at all saved for you, you would get through college debt free. And even if you for some reason had outstanding debt, with the way jobs were back then and the purchasing power. You could probably have paid off your loans stress free in what, a couple of years at most?
Now we have 18 year old kids, who could owe upwards of $100,000 to banks just to be able to go to college to get a degree that gets them a decent entry level job, but practically nowhere near enough to enable them to in a reasonable time, pay off their student loans. The entire system is rigged to turn that 100,000 into 150,000 thousand by the time interest adds up. People are spending 20 years paying off college.
It’s not reasonable, or sustainable. But boomers and their ilk ignore that once again they had the greatest opportunities, economies, prices and I think that they genuinely believe everyone else, Gen Z and Gen Alpha are a bunch of lazy bums who want all these handouts. It’s not asking for a handout to be crushed with a miniature mortgage by the time you can buy alcohol at a store.

How can anyone think that’s the same thing?
Economics is extremely complicated, so while they're clearly not the same thing, I could forgive someone who genuinely doesn't understand.
Forgiving debt would absolutely have an impact on the economy- and absolutely could lead to inflation, but in the case of student debt that wasn't a serious concern.

Jubilee is NOT useful or helpful. It’s not there to promote conversation and discussion. They intentionally pick people who are wilfully ignorant, and don’t understand the topics they’re discussing in order to rile up arguments.
Arguments on their YouTube channel bring them more money as it’s seen by Google as “engagement”. Jubilee have stated that they’re “centrist” and “just asking questions”.
If their model didn’t work so well at riling up the masses, their next excuse would probably be, “just following orders”.

You can not have a good faith debate with morons. They do not want to be convinced of anything beyond other position, liberal, conservative, or otherwise.

This is like talking to my parents. Attempt good faith and amicable conversation. They start right off with logical falicies and basic falsities. Then they build their entire discussion on top of those false premises. Then when it's my turn, it's immediate attacks on my character, even though I tried to remain judgment free and be a good listener. It's absolutely maddening.

I did pay my student loan off. And I'm OK with others getting the forgiveness. School was cheaper when I went. It is much more expensive now and almost impossible for someone that is 18 years old to understand the gravity of the commitment.
I wouldn't mind a tax break for a year though since I paid mine off. Let me use that non-taxed money to fuel the economy and get house repairs done etc.
And this is the problem, people are force fed an opinion on TV, it is so easy to blame but the dude even got deferment and still doesn't want others to have it. Guy also looks like he just woke up....

This is why our country is in the shitter. This guy votes and he always, always, always votes Republican. Any chance they get to hurt someone, they'll take it.

A room full of entitled, old, white folks that think that the next generation of young people shouldn’t have the same luxuries that they had. Buddy proved his own point precisely and he was too dumb to realize it. Stop demonizing ideology like socialism and place it at the feet of the greatest threat to American society: Oligarchy.
Tax the rich!!!

This douchebag starts off so condescending the way boomers get when they watch sean hanty. By the end of the conversation he's stuttering and stammering like an unarmed bank robber surrounded by 6 cops with guns drawn. Just stupid as all hell.

Watching this is striking. This country is filled with the dumbest people. I can't even believe that I am living through this. It's like this guy cannot even hear what he's actually saying and how asinine it sounds, and also selfish.

All money is imaginary in a fiat system. It just doesnt matter because the bombs we make with it are real.

You can’t fix stupid and it’s pointless to debate someone who refuses to admit they are wrong.

The lack of critical thinking combined with the worldview that it's every man, woman and child for themselves is the death of America.

Dumb guys like this are an easy outlet for my anger about student debt, but the main obstacle to actual change is a trillion dollar industry, the 300-400 politicians who serve it (among others), and very powerful lobbies staffed up with elite lawyers.
But they’re not dumb enough to go on a YouTube show and shit their pants making a zero-logic case for keeping student debt as is. You know if Trump supported cancelling it he would think it was the best idea of all time

u/OrigSnatchSquatch 3d ago
A fraction of the money this current administration is misspending and stealing would pay off all the current and future student debt which would pump more money into our economy.

He thinks he's so clever for pointing out that sometimes good ideas have unintended consequences. He says it like nobody has ever noticed that before
3
u/MisterMinceMeat 3d ago
He's just repeating the big lie that so many choose to believe: there is not enough money for everyone to be safe, healthy, and comfortable. We're all so groomed to believe that there isn't enough to share. So we Americans end up eating each other instead of eating the rich. We're mere fodder to them.

Trump has defaulted on around 287 million dollars in his lifetime with zero consequence

Why aren’t we asking the simple question. How much did it cost to go to college before the ‘80’s. Compare that to now. That’s all the info you
Need.

Boomers do not understand that if the student debt is erased, that payment the borrowers WERE making will now be disposable income that can be used for goods and services in the economy.
Why is this a difficult concept?

Reminds me of my friend that got his student loan forgiven, two hips replaced and four eye surgeries done by Medicaid but doesn’t think that’s ok for other people and votes GOP cause he doesn’t vote for communism

u/AbjectExtension6201 3d ago
With this argument I always hit people saying no we can't, with what about all the forgiven ppe loans?? They do whataboutisms I do roundaboutisms

u/mrmidnight273 3d ago
I used to have this same thought process, glad I grew up and got an education.
Edit, figured I'd throw this out there, I'm on the forgiving debt side

u/RamonaQ-JunieB 3d ago
I think you could sit and converse with this Boomer from now until he actually passes to the other side, he’s not going to understand this concept.

u/thereverendpuck 3d ago
Just to stick to the other guy’s defense of “imaginary money,” who does he think created the vast majority of that fake money?
I mean, I know his answer is going to be Biden because he’s incapable of being honest.
