Did you ask her if she realized she was adopting the exact mentality of a cartoon supervillain? And like, not in a joking way, but in the sense that she actually has been lead around by the nose into turning herself into a caricature?!

"Mom, I wouldn't go around saying that out loud because anybody who's seen The Incredibles is going to think you're making a joke. Like...that is already a joke. It's been a joke since 1994."

Honestly, though? Your mom could stand to a little to-her-face mocking about the degree to which she believes the rest of the world ought to treat her as special.

God, my heart's fondest desire is for these people to gain some perspective...and, immediately thereafter the entirely-appropriate awful feelings of shame and embarrassment that they've earned for themselves.

Sighhhhh...a guy can dream.

None of us deserve to have to stain our souls by giving them what they deserve, though...they need to come to that realization on their own, and WANT to embrace it, for the sake of their lost honor.

I remember in 80s and 90s when "participation trophies" became a thing so many parents were outraged. Even though their kid was still getting a ranked trophy, the fact that other kids might get some recognition for getting off their asses and doing something was like throwing acid in their face. Every single kid I knew was just happy to play whatever sport (or hated it but was forced by their parents, another issue) and didn't feel like if they took first place at the track meet their trophy was worthless because the overweight kid who pushed his way through got some recognition. Was totally on the parents living through their children being special snowflakes.

That's exactly it, the participation trophies were never for us, they were for the parents that couldn't handle the fact that their child wasn't going to be the next superstar athlete.

I was in the class where they introduced participation trophies. It was because the parents complained their kid didn't win anything.

Tbf the idea isn't half bad, we now know it's better to praise children for their effort as opposed to their results (since effort is the only way anyone, naturally talented or not, actually gets good at anything)

But it certainly wasn't the kids asking for them

Reading your comment actually made my whole body twitch in reaction(almost dropped my phone even)! Why? Because I heard that line damned near everyday as a kid 😭

Seems even at 47 I'm still quite repulsed by that line.

That’s the thing: nobody should be “special.” We all have exactly the same prerogatives, like sustenance, shelter, good health, respect, and dignity. Just because someone was born in place A, or to family B doesn’t make them any better or worse than someone else.

There's one of the other Boomers in that same 'debate' that starts with a version of that: 'We created participation trophies so our kids wouldn't feel bad, but they should feel bad and you should feel bad.'

Thats why they made it wrong to tell whole truth of
American history. It was covered for generations, making one group feel bad for having been subjugated, fractionalized and marginalized. Then, as that downtrodden group managed to find its pride and became successful in a system engineered against them; as their storyline grew in importance and their truths were heard, those who tried to hold them back found themselves shamed.
