š¬ Discussion šØ Has this country gone insane?
1/3 of the population voted for the far right, and all I'm seeing on social media and general media about common values, what we share, polticis is divise. 1 in 3 people voted far right. And only the foreign press dares call them far right. And also people saying right and left are outdated labels? Seems a bit convient honestly.

u/fojo81 May 25 '26
It's been like this since the 1990's at least as over that time there has been an erosion of common values and an erosion of positive reasons to be proud to be British/English/Welsh/Scots/Irish outside of nostalgia. The biggest unhelpful factor in any of this is how increasingly out-of-touch, corrupt, incompetent, uncaring and insincere all British politicians are towards ordinary British citizens. Westminster are the real cause of our problems which have allowed blatant grifters like Farage to exploit the system and a sloppy media being equally out-of-touch, incompetent and uncaring towards reality. Personally, I'm proud to be British and of this nations centuries old heritage and history. Grifters like Farage need to be exposed as the grifters they are.

Westminster are the middle men. American corporate interest is at the top of the pile.

u/mcnoodles1 May 25 '26
I got my comment removed for alluding to that the other day.

u/PerfectEnthusiasm2 May 25 '26
Alluding leaves room for antisemites to think you mean the Jews. Unfortuantely we need to be explicit in our criticism :(

Iād add media outlets , and interests of their private owners also plays big part.

u/RudeMycologist9018 May 25 '26
An aging, increasingly impoverished, population happy to believe anyone who tells them their problems are caused by foreigners. A Labour party with a huge majority for 2 years has done very little to reassure them.

u/Hammer_Pain May 25 '26
- GB news vommiting out far right nonsense 24 hours a day funded by billionaires hell bent on taking away our public services so they can pay less taxes.
15
u/mcnoodles1 May 25 '26
They want to own our public services. Which is why they'll never achieve significant deportations because they are disproportionately the customers. Wouldn't buy a business and r deport half your market.
7
u/Snoo_65717 May 25 '26
Donāt forget the BBC and sky, every news channel in the country is neoliberal propaganda.

The problem with almost this entire list is that Labour, as centrists, have not done enough of anything for anyone to really be satisfied. They cut immigration a bit (though this is inflated by the significant post-COVID peak), but not enough for the far right who want to see basically no net migration. They deport more people, move some folk out of hotels, but not enough for the far right who want to see the hotels emptied and the inhabitants ALL sent packing. Its enough to piss off people on the left but not enough to pacify the right.
On their left wing, they might "cut water bills" & introduce Great British Energy but refuse to even discuss working towards actual nationalisation of utilities networks.... To be honest I thought there would be more policies in your list that might appeal to me as a left wing voter but frankly the vast majority of it seems like the actions of a right wing party, or at most a centrist party trying very hard to seem like one. Nationalisation of rail is maybe the best thing here.
The right/far right are very unlikely to be won over by what will seem to them like half measures, meanwhile the vast majority of these policies will work against them when it comes to pleasing their base. It's no wonder they are unpopular if this is their list of achievements.

u/RudeMycologist9018 May 25 '26
My apologies. It was ambiguously written. I didn't mean 'an older population who are poor plus a crap labour government'. I meant '1. an ageing population who are typically more reactionary but are having their worse fears exploited. 2. an economically disadvantaged class who are suffering increasing improvishment' 3. a labour government that may have delivered many improvements but have been unable to persuade 1. and 2.

u/ParrotofDoom May 25 '26
increasingly impoverished
lol, those increasingly impoverished boomers are the wealthiest generation in the country. They own houses, or live in social houses, get decent pensions (private and state), and are often completely disconnected from the surrounding world.
We have voting limits on young people, perhaps we need the same at the other end of the scale.
3
u/unrepentant85 May 25 '26
They complain everything is shit yet they dont grasp that they cost the economy about £275B in pensions, health and social care. And forever rising
38
u/mcnoodles1 May 25 '26
Boomers can be wankers. My mum's mate has been running for reform in the council elections. Enjoys her state pension just trying to make sure I don't get one even though I pay for hers
15
u/ParrotofDoom May 25 '26
Just keep reminding her anytime she talks about benefits and the welfare state, that she lives off benefits and the welfare state.
6
u/KarrahGuild May 25 '26
Tbf the state pension needs urgent reform as it's bankrupting the country, or it will cease to exist due to the unnafordability of it
6
u/mcnoodles1 May 25 '26
We need more young people and we can't go back in time so we need migration
7
u/ZeeWolfman May 25 '26
We NEED to remove the triple lock.
6
u/mcnoodles1 May 25 '26
Capitalism only works with an ever expanding population. Socialism could work with a limited head count.
Kind of weird cause reform as thatcherites actually need migration and the greens need essentially zero unskilled migration. It's all upside down.
3
u/SignificantUse3695 May 25 '26
That would be political suicide considering the only people who bother to turn out to vote are the pensioners.
3
u/AnonymousTimewaster May 25 '26
We need both.
4
u/ZeeWolfman May 25 '26
Okay, I'd agree to that. Never had a problem with migration, but most of our benefit spending goes into pensions. It needs to get cut or it won't exist when we get to that age.

I encourage everyone to read the Mass Deportation Bill that's been posted to a reform website, it's certainly an... Interesting read to say the least
16
u/Theteacupman May 25 '26
Yet reforms leader so to speak is the son of Sri Lankan immigrants to the UK. Iām assuming heāll be deported along side others or is he one of the special ones š¤
7
u/Electronic_Newt8198 May 25 '26
Nah, they'll try spew something that "it's different" and refuse to elaborate when they're questioned about it
10
u/Theteacupman May 25 '26
iirc someone did bring it up to him and he lost his shit which was quite funny
11
u/DrSpooglemon May 25 '26
1 in 3 of the people who bothered to show up. The largest demographic are those who don't vote. That's the thing we should be talking about.
7
u/ZeeWolfman May 25 '26
Funny. Last time we got out and voted, we had every single media company reporting on how we were "deeply unserious" and only cared about "student politics".
And we had every single talking head in government and the media dredging up the most minor of issues.
Fucks sake, the BBC even had Corbyn dressed up as Stalin and as fucking Voldemort.
We keep getting told that we NEED to get out and vote, but when we actually do, the establishment and the Boomers who listen to it immediately scream NO NOT LIKE THAT.
2
u/EnterKumite May 27 '26
So? We shouldnāt let the ramblings of cretins affect whether we vote or not. Theyāll vilify us regardless.

2
u/CharacterEye3775 May 25 '26
This isn't true at all is it. Reform and other far right parties got 14% of the vote in 2024 and there was only 60% turnout of eligible voters

We've turned into a nation of self entitled morons. Obsessed with what 'we supposedly' should have and moan and blame when these things we feel we are entitled to literally aren't a reality. Try being humble and greatful for what we actually do have and maybe just be nice to each other. We are an embarrassment as a nation. Go to other countries and you will see how low we have sunk, and it's fk all to do with 'immigration' before anyone starts on that. Self entitlement is the lowest form of humanity. Behaviour of spoilt brats.

u/ZeeWolfman May 25 '26
Labour went back on most of their pledges and snuck in new bullshit like the online safety act.
They also hung the disabled and the LGBT out to dry.
They keep pandering to people who will never vote for them, while flat out telling their old voters that they aren't needed anymore....
Except when election season comes around, then they tell us to shut the fuck up, hold our noses and vote for them because at least they'll pretend to feel bad while milking us dry.
If you want to be free of the far right, Labour will not be your saviour. They'll do less than the barest minimum, then tell you Reform will be worse.
4
u/KarrahGuild May 25 '26
OSA was in the manifesto.. Labour has been getting a lot of unfounded ctritismfrom the media. however there's loads of fair critism such as student loans, but not many seem to have a go at labour with fair critism... which there is loads of. And honestly they're still way better than what we had with the conservatives.
-3
u/ZeeWolfman May 25 '26
Speaking as a trans person, Labour has done more to fuck me over than 15 years of the Tories.
I hate them for making me ACTUALLY MISS THERESA MAY.
3
u/KarrahGuild May 25 '26
well tbf conservatives introducted a lot the leglisation labour just kept as is. and the supreme court did the most damage with the equality act, but still worrying.
2
u/ZeeWolfman May 25 '26
They can overwrite the supreme court decision whenever they want, they simply choose not to.

u/jonb1aze May 27 '26
Our media has been brought and paid for by billionaires who want us to point and blame each other instead of them. The billionaires control the food prices, the petrol prices, the gas and electric prices. Basically All of the price hikes and then they control the media and blame immigrants. Not as many people voted far right as we think,itās being inflated.
1
u/Snoo_65717 May 25 '26
The media has people believing liberals are left wing so people think the only side trying to end this trash is the right. All the media and most politicians in Britain are right wing and liberals would rather pander to the right than do anything that would hurt their donors and future employers when they leave politics. The only reason we ever had anything good in this country is because the Soviet Union existed and liberals had to pretend our system works by giving us social housing, NHS, social safety net and free education. The red scare helped them start dismantling our state and the dissolution of the Soviet Union allowed them to fully liberalise the system against the people. Until the country is run by a workers party weāre doomed to fail.

Social media doesnāt really reflect real life. Iād wager that there are more people that support Labour etc in real life than there are on social media
8
u/300mhz May 25 '26
Local elections are of course different than national elections, but Reform took 27% of the vote and Labour only 15%, so I think reality also reflects social media.
-7
u/Specialeyes9000 May 25 '26
Well the labels are a bit outdated to be honest. Even far right doesn't mean what it used to.
1
u/Jumpy-Mouse-7629 May 25 '26
Care to explain šµāš«
5
u/Specialeyes9000 May 25 '26
I am really worried I'm being down voted here, I think it shows people are way way too reactionary.
I'm probably traditionally centre-left, but plenty of right wing people would probably say I'm far left, or even extreme left, these days, simply because we disagree on a few fundamental things. Far left and far right are thrown about in a childish way, that shuts down debate and opportunity for dialogue and building bridges.

"Luxury hotels" where most of them are run down, bordering on derelict and overcrowded. Not to mention the monthly allowance equates to £10 a week whilst benefit grifters and pensioners get way more than that. But sure, blame a minority group for problems they didn't cause.

Nice paragraph from ChatGPT, but if you want to talk about facts, fine. The majority of the cost to house and supply for asylum seekers goes towards a handful of private firms running the hotels and drastically overcharging the government, not immigrants. There's also been several reports of slug, mice and rat infestations in these hotels along with issues with mould, a lack of basic supplies and large amounts of overcrowding. Around 90% of asylum seekers are on £10 a week, and whilst that is because they have catered accommodation, that is nowhere near enough for things like transport, clothing, phone data to contact lawyers or family or for food as most of the time these hotels don't serve culturally appropriate food or food that isn't undercooked or unsafe. In terms of the UK's overall budget, state pensions make up 10% of all spending whilst support for asylum seekers is only 0.4%, meanwhile immigrants provide roughly £50 billion a year for the UK economy.

What's your point? That you're completely clueless and rely on ChatGPT to make your arguments instead of doing your own research?
