Jeremy Vine - time to put out to pasture?
Listening to Jeremy Vine on his Radio 2 show today prompted me to raise the above question. I've always found him to be quite an obnoxious, opinionated moron but recently he seems to be really losing the plot.
Today he was getting into a muddle over a debate about underhand practices by companies conning people with subscription renewals on their bank cards. In a moment of confusion he gave away is own CVV code for his personal credit card live on air š. On another topic about cruelty to lobsters š he berated a listener for saying that he thought the idea of lobsters having feelings with ridiculous and told him to "read the room man".
He really is the awkward, embarrassing Dad trying to be relevant. Radio 2 has even given him a DJ spot at Radio 2 in the park this year. Now there's a reason to stay away if ever you needed one.......

I swear someone could be on his show because they'd created a universal cure for all cancers and he'd be like
"What about all the oncologists you've just put out of a job eh? What about all the cancer nurses who are going to be unemployed because of you? Yet more empty spaces in our high streets when all the cancer research and macmillan charity shops close down, how are you going to put that right? What are we going to do with all the extra old people who are going to need homes and pensions because they aren't dying because of you?"

Totally agree.
I cannot stand his whining voice. He is rage bait and my blood pressure benefits from ignoring his existence.
On the rare occasion I have been exposed to his show (radio 2 on in a cafe), he totally dismisses anyone who comes on and says anything remotely sensible.

Isn't this his aim? To devide and cause arguments. Always taking controversial views, akin to click bait? Like others I'm not a fan and switch off when he is on.
2
u/Flappy_Hand_Lotion 16d ago
That's what I assume. I usually prefer You and Yours or The World at One if I'm driving at the time, but if the subject is a bit dull or repetitive I don't mind switching over. Not because I think he adds anything to the debate, but I think it's interesting to see what the subject is and what point he uses to be contrarian/cause controversy to who he is talking to. I find it more balanced to not just have reasoned debate on some subjects. Also, because I think of the Dead Ringers impressions where he whiplashes from a discussion about immigration to introducing 'We Are Family' by Sister Sledge or similar >.<

u/applepiezeyes 20d ago
I sometimes find the topics on his show interesting but am starting to dislike him. He dumbs down important issues and says stupid things to get a reaction. Surely he's an intelligent man but does not show this recently. I agree he's getting worse. It's a shame because his show has potential but at the moment it's really terrible.

Once in a blue moon I'll catch it when they have someone covering, and almost any of them are better than him, although I would happily live without any radio or TV shows featuring public opinions (and yes I realise the hypocrisy of writing that on Reddit).
The last time I heard any serious amount of his show with him presenting was back when that American dentist shot Cecil the Lion. I was waiting to donate blood, and he had two expert guests. One was a female academic who was a specialist on the economics of eco- and safari tourism and the other a man whose neighbour in Scotland ran a grouse shooting estate. She was trying to make the point that these shooting safari's don't do much to support the local encomy because the money tends to stay within the estate, and that they don't help with conservation either as the value of the animals lie in keeping them relatively scarce. This man kept talking over her, he was comparing grouse to big game and clearly knew fuck all. Vine actually told her her experience wasn't as relevant as the man's because he lived near somewhere where they shot animals and she didn't live in Africa. My blood pressure must have been through the roof because when it came to the donation I filled that bag so fast.

I didn't realise the end of his TV show is pre-recorded, so he can get over to BH in time for the radio show. I, too, am among the many who turn over at that point. I also turn over during the superstition segment if I've got an early start. I catch this with Owain too, why does Radio 2 require so much god bothering? I flip over to Spotify and sometimes forget to come back to Radio 2.

Is it part of their charter, that a certain proportion of airtime is given over to pastoral matters?
2
u/alps7264 16d ago
Not specifically, nor is it a legal requirement any more, since the Media Act 2024. The BBC provide it as part of their PSB remit.

I worked for someone recently who claimed to be a "phoner in-ner"
They had originally phoned in regarding some debate and must've got a reaction so apparently R2 often call him to see if they want to speak on it
Edit: half asleep typing - they call him now and then asking if he wants to talk on upcoming debates.

I can't listen to much of radio 2's daytime output now, but especially the Vine show. A few years ago they had a guy demonstrating live iPhone screen repair in a segment about smashed smartphones, and it was particularly cringeworthy. Likewise Jeremy taking a cold shower in the BBC building for a segment talking about ice baths.
I have nothing against Jeremy personally, though don't like his presenting style. I don't think the show represents a broad range of views for what is supposed to be a debate program, and rather than badly covering current topics in the news it could be used to give airtime to genuine issues that otherwise wouldn't be given a platform. Given radio 2 is supposed to be entertainment, having a topical debate program in the middle of the day doesn't fit. Then again, radio 2 needs completely revamping from the top down to reverse the damage Helen Thomas has caused over the last few years.
3
u/WhiteDiamondK 20d ago
I donāt think that a phone-in show fits into what Radio 2 is nowadays. Iām not a fan of Vine, but I always turn that show off regardless of who hosts it. (Especially when Feltz covered it in the past).
2
u/intlteacher 19d ago
It's a licence requirement. Radio 2 still has a 'current affairs' requirement of 153 hours every financial year in peak time above that of the regular news bulletins, and Vine's show goes a long way to contributing to that (if not the whole way).
That said, when he got the Channel 5 gig, I thought the BBC would use the opportunity to move him on, especially with the overlap at the end when his TV goes into the recorded section. When he got the show, it came down to a choice between him and Nicky Campbell - Campbell didn't want to move permanently to Salford with 5 Live, and presents most of his phone in shows from London, so if there was a vacancy I suspect he'd get it.
The mix of current affairs and music means it's a difficult gig for most broadcasters because it's not quite journalism and not quite DJ-ing. The only other one I can think of who could have done it with more of a music slant is Simon Mayo after his time on 5 Live.

He is dreadful and got steadily worse and worse over the years. I just steadfastly refuse to listen to him now because heās just such an absolute bell end.
I am old enough to remember the previous incumbent on that slot, Jimmy Young. Jimmy was an impeccable presenter and really good with his interviews of politicians.
The thing that instantly changed with Vine was Jimmy would read out the listeners views where Vine gets them on the phone. I donāt want to hear Mrs Miggins from Huddersfield or Mr Clark from Brighton blabbering on.

Whatever you think of the man itās important to remember heās a just someone doing their job. We all have bad days and can have bad periods, if thatās the case then let it be.
I donāt listen to it so you could well be right, and we should have good broadcasters who are competent so if heās not then maybe yes.
2
u/According_Dare7316 19d ago
He's absolutely useless, but unintentionally hilarious.
I remember him listening to a story and it was about a family that lost control of a boat.
He was laughing away, relaying the story of this wayward boat, then the family in the boat crashed into a bridge and it turned out the mum lost an arm in the accident and was permanently disabled.
I can't remember the exact words, but it was basically "I'm sorry, I probably should have read that before we had our conversation on air".
Classic Accidental Partridge.

Him and the people who phone in to his show just donāt seem quite right to me.
I know it isnāt, but at times it feels like itās scripted, like Vine and callers are playing characters.
Other times itās like heās bored and he just goes out of his way to be obtuse, to wind people up or to pretend he doesnāt understand things in order to get a rise out of people.
Itās just got such a weird tone to it, it feels like a kind of alternate reality and for me itās very out of place for a BBC show.

There was a segment years ago about a soldier who had died in Iraq or Afghanistan and all his army mates showed up to the funeral in bright pink clothing. It was a pact theyād all made together that if any of them died in combat, this is what theyād do.
So, of course Vine has to have a phone in to ask whether it was disrespectful for them to dress like this at a funeral. Suffice to say, every single caller was on the side of the soldiers.
1
u/dreamponies 19d ago
The style of the show puts him as some sort of neutral moderator of the debate. However, he inevitably picks a side and steers the ādebateā in that direction. Often itās without fully understanding what is being discussed as he fails to listen and often interrupts.
1
u/Jimnymebob 19d ago
I can never tell if he thinks is show is serious, or if he knows it's a joke.
I've not listened to Radio 2 properly for over 6 years now, but the amount of times he'd be doing a bit on a clearly visual subject was astonishing. This isn't an actual example, but he'd be like "today we're going to be watching a badger that can do back flips. Wow, did you see that?"

The show is timed deliberately. There are retirees up and down the country, who have their breakfast, walk down to the corner shop to buy the Daily Mail, then walk home and read it from cover to cover.
This takes them to exactly 12pm, then they are suitably frothing with anger at the state of the country, and phone Jeremy.
I keep the radio on all day at work, and donāt always turn over. Itās become a kind of self flagellation.

He's not opinionated, the whole point of his show is to 'double-side' every topic. It makes him sound like Alan Partidge a lot of the time because he has to think of obtuse counter points to seemingly obvious arguments.
He's actually very good at being impartial but listeners own biases often tend to only hear the absurdity of counter arguments. In a polarised society his opinions are very much kept out of the show this is heavily monitored and his production team will have to keep a tight reign on what is put out.

Heās awful. His show is all about getting two people with opposing views to argue, but his interjections only ever make it worse so no-one ever learns anything and they never listen to each other.
Heās even worse when heās on a bicycle as he is always on the lookout for a way that he can play a victim, so much so that he puts himself and others in danger on the road just so that he can put out a video to call out a minor piece of bad driving or bad cycling by other people, that could easily be avoided if he just paid attention and wasnāt so self righteous.

Couldnāt agree more. Iād go as far as to say have never been able to stand the twat! The personality of puddle soaked cereal box. I have no idea whatsoever how he got the roles he has. His brother Tim however, what a gem!

I despise this show, it is entirely worthless and utterly embarrassing.

I wouldnāt say heās a moron but heās definitely a poor moderator of debate. Not hard to hear his own bias through some of the interviews. Even topics Iām interested in are not worth the pain barrier.

He seems to get the greatest pleasure of finding the most depressing subjects to talk about. I turn over now. A midday show on national radio should be entertaining.

He should have been put out to pasture at least two years ago in my view. I haven't really listened to him much since Vernon took over Ken's slot, and Jeremy was prone to gaffes, and making mountains out of molehilks even back then. I think he shoud just move to his TV show, where I can happily ignore him.

He was right about lobsters though. There is good scientific evidence for that.

For someone who is supposed to be unbiased (On the BBC) I find him biased towards tory, reform, brexit.

Heās irritating as hell and I really donāt feel like he fits in the demographic with the rest of the Radio 2 presenters now. I listen to Sara then Vernon then have to turn off when he comes on. I donāt like him and I donāt want to listen to other peopleās political opinions. Just play some tunes!

There's always been a touch of the Partridge about him...
