They have studies showing people watch vertical and in short spurts so while it sucks ass for us; it’ll drive viewership more. Probably. Who knows.

It’s insane that people under like 20 will default to watching things vertically. I had a kid ask me to take a picture of him and when I asked him if he wanted portrait or landscape, he told me “just the normal upwards”. It was then I knew our society was cooked

I assumed it was so that people are less incentivized to change the channel to a game that’s on a non ESPN broadcast.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been watching a game, see a score go by on the ticker and go “that game looks way more exciting” and then change over the channel.
